Canesten is an antifungal agent with a wide range of therapeutic activity.
Indications Canestena
It is used to eliminate the following disorders:
- fungi that affect the epidermis and mucous membranes (caused by yeast or mold fungi, dermatophytes, as well as other pathogenic microbes that are sensitive to clotrimazole);
- epidermal infections caused by the activity of Malassezia furfur and Corynebacterium minutissimum, with therapy, respectively, causing lichen variegated character, as well as erythrasma;
- candidal vulvitis (women) or candidal balanitis (men);
- The use of suppositories in a 0.1 g dose can be carried out for the sanitation of the birth canals in pregnant women (if sensitive pathogenic bacteria were detected in the late stages of pregnancy).
Release form
The drug is released in the form of a cream, in 20 g tubes.
It is also produced in the form of vaginal suppositories, 1, 3 or 6 pieces inside a blister plate. In addition to blisters, the box contains a special applicator, with the help of which intravaginal administration of the drug is performed.

Pharmacodynamics
The antifungal effect of the drug is provided by suppression of ergosterol release, as a result of which functional and structural disorders develop inside the cytoplasmic walls. The drug also has a fungicidal and fungistatic effect.
A wide range of antifungal activity allows the drug to act on dermatophytes, dimorphic, yeast and mold fungi. The inhibitory effect of the drug develops at substance levels of 0.062-8.0 μg/ml.
In addition to the antifungal effect, the drug also affects the activity of gram-positive bacteria, including staphylococci and streptococci, as well as -negative microbes (bacteroids and gardnerella vaginalis) - at concentrations of the substance equal to 0.5-10 μg/ml.
Pharmacokinetics
Tests have shown that the absorption of clotrimazole is quite weak and varies within 2-10% of the applied portion. Peak values of the drug in the plasma are less than 10 ng / ml, from which it can be concluded that the likelihood of developing general negative effects is very low.
After intravaginal administration of suppositories, systemic absorption is a maximum of 10%. Metabolic processes lead to the formation of inactive derivatives excreted from the body.
Dosing and administration
The cream should be used externally, treating the affected areas with it (with a thin strip, the thickness of which is 0.5 cm) and gently rubbing it in. This procedure must be repeated 2-3 times a day.
The maximum permissible duration of therapy is 1 month. The exact time frame must be selected individually, taking into account the severity and localization of the lesion, as well as the type of causative bacteria:
- for dermatomycosis – 3-4 weeks;
- for erythrasma - 0.5-1 month;
- for the multi-colored form of lichen - 1-3 weeks;
- candidal form of balanitis or vulvitis - 7-14 days.
Mode of administration for intravaginal method.
Suppositories should be inserted into the vagina as deeply as possible. It is recommended to perform the procedure before going to bed. If allowed, the insertion process can be carried out using an applicator. When inserting, the patient should lie horizontally, lying on her back.
At night, the medicine is administered in a standard dose - 1 suppository per day.
Use Canestena during pregnancy
Canesten should be used with great caution in the first trimester, and also during lactation.
