Calcium hopantenate is a nootropic psychostimulant drug.
Indications Calcium gopantenate
It is used for combination treatment in the following cases:
- cognitive disorders that developed as a result of organic brain damage (including complications after neuroinfection or TBI);
- CVD caused by atherosclerotic changes in the cerebral vessels;
- extrapyramidal disorders (such as progressive myoclonus, Huntington's chorea, hepatocerebral dystrophy and shaking palsy);
- epilepsy, in which inhibition of mental reactions is observed (treatment is carried out in combination with anticonvulsants);
- psycho-emotional overload, weakening of performance, both physical and mental (helps to increase attentiveness and concentration, as well as improve memorization);
- neurogenic disorders of the urinary processes: such as pollakiuria with enuresis, and in addition, urinary incontinence (imperative form) and imperative urges;
- children over 3 years of age with perinatal encephalopathy and mental retardation of varying degrees of severity. In addition, children suffering from developmental delays (speech and mental, as well as motor, or a combination of these types), as well as with various forms of cerebral palsy, and in addition with ADHD (and with tics), with stuttering (mainly clonic type) and neurosis-like conditions.
Pharmacodynamics
The drug acts by means of hopantenic acid, which affects the activity of the channel complex for the GABA-B receptor. The drug has anticonvulsant and nootropic properties. It increases brain resistance to hypoxia, as well as the influence of toxic elements, and in addition, it promotes the development of anabolic processes inside neurons. The drug also combines a mild stimulating effect and a moderate sedative effect, reduces motor excitation and has an anticonvulsant effect.
Improves physical and mental performance, helps stabilize GABA in the case of chronic alcohol poisoning, as well as after subsequent withdrawal of ethyl alcohol. Extends the effect of sulfonamides with novocaine, slowing down the acetylation reactions of these substances. Helps slow down the pathologically enhanced visceral reflex and detrusor tone.
Pharmacokinetics
The drug is quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, passes through the BBB. In high concentrations, it is found inside the skin, as well as the kidneys and liver. The drug requires 1 hour to reach peak levels.
The drug is not subject to metabolic processes and is excreted unchanged after 48 hours: about 67.5% is excreted in the urine, and another 28.5% in the feces.
Dosing and administration
The drug Calcium hopantenate is used in combination therapy. Tablets should be taken 15-30 minutes after eating.

When eliminating extrapyramidal disorders caused by the use of neuroleptics: for adults and adolescents from 12 years old - 0.5-1 g three times a day. For children in the age range of 3-12 years - 0.25-0.5 g of the drug 3-4 times a day. This course lasts for 1-3 months.

For the treatment of urinary problems: adolescents aged 12 years and over, as well as adults, take 0.5-1 g of the drug 2-3 times a day. Children aged 3-12 years, take 0.25-0.5 g of the drug 2-3 times a day (the daily dose is 25-50 mg/kg). This course lasts for 1-3 months.
Children aged 3-12 years during treatment of mental retardation, perinatal encephalopathy, and in addition to cerebral palsy and developmental delay are required to take 0.5 g of the drug 4-6 times a day. This course should last 3 months. During treatment of speech delay, it is required to take 0.5 g of the drug 3-4 times a day for 2-3 months.

Use Calcium gopantenate during pregnancy
It is prohibited to prescribe in the 1st trimester. It is possible to use in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, but only in cases where the probable benefit to the pregnant woman is higher than the possibility of complications in the fetus.
Interactions with other drugs
The medicine prolongs the effect of barbiturates, potentiates the properties of anticonvulsants, as well as drugs that have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system. Calcium hopantenate also prevents the side effects of carbamazepine with phenobarbital, and in addition to this, neuroleptics. Along with this, it potentiates the properties of local anesthetics (such as procaine).
The drug can slow down the acetylation processes that are involved in the inactivation of the substance novocaine, as well as sulfonamides, resulting in an extension of the duration of action of these drugs.
The properties of hopantenic acid are potentiated when combined with etidronic acid and glycine.
