Indications Calcium chloride

It is used for the following diseases:

  • functional insufficiency of the parathyroid glands (pathologies such as tetany or spasmophilia);
  • increased excretion of calcium (also due to spending a long period of time in a motionless state);
  • allergic pathologies (urticaria with Quincke's edema, hay fever and serum sickness; this list also includes diseases caused by taking medications);
  • strengthening of the walls of blood vessels (weakened due to hemorrhagic vasculitis or radiation sickness);
  • in the development of exudative lesions or inflammations (such as pneumonia or salpingo-oophoritis, as well as pleurisy or endometritis);
  • skin surface lesions (eczema or psoriasis);
  • liver intoxication, eclampsia, as well as nephritis or hepatitis of parenchymatous nature;
  • paroxysmal myoplegia (hyperkalemic form);
  • during bleeding of endogenous or external type;

The medicine is used as an antidote to eliminate intoxications with ethanedioic acid, as well as its salts, magnesium salts and soluble salts of hydrofluoric acid. It is also used as a stimulant of labor.

Pharmacodynamics

The drug helps to replenish the deficiency of the substance Ca2+, without which normal transmission of impulses through nerve endings is impossible. In addition, the deficiency of the substance prevents normal contraction of muscles (skeletal and smooth), disrupts the work of the myocardium, as well as the processes of blood clotting and bone tissue formation.

Calcium chloride helps prevent the development of an inflammatory response to the pathogen, strengthen vascular cells and walls, and in addition, enhance the body's immune response to infections. At the same time, the drug significantly enhances the process of phagocytosis (for example, when it is reduced due to the use of sodium chloride).

Intravenous injection of the drug stimulates the activity of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system, and in addition has a moderate diuretic effect and increases the amount of adrenaline secreted by the adrenal glands.

Pharmacokinetics

About 20-30% of the orally administered solution is absorbed through the small intestine. The rate of absorption depends on gastric pH, dietary characteristics, and the presence of calciferol and individual factors capable of synthesizing Ca2+.

Increased absorption occurs in the case of a deficiency of the element Ca in the body, and also when using a diet that includes reduced Ca2+ intake.

Within the plasma, about half of the applied dose (approximately 45%) is synthesized with protein.

Approximately 20% of the drug is excreted in the urine, and 80% is excreted in the intestinal contents.

Dosing and administration

The solution is administered intravenously, by jet (extremely slowly), and also by drip (also quite slowly). There is also a method of administration using electrophoresis.

Drip injections: 5-10 ml of the drug (10%) should be diluted in an isotonic sodium chloride solution (use approximately 100-200 ml) or in a glucose solution (5%), and then administered at a rate of 6 drops per minute.

Jet injections: it is necessary to administer a 10% solution of the drug (dose 5 ml) over no more than 3-5 minutes.

The duration of treatment is determined taking into account the severity and nature of the disease, as well as the effectiveness of the drug.

Daily dose sizes:

  • adults: 0.5-1 g (approximately 5-10 ml of 10% solution);
  • infants under six months: 50 mg (about 0.5 ml);
  • infants aged 7-12 months: 50-100 mg (about 0.5-1 ml);
  • children aged 1-3 years: 100-200 mg (approximately 1-2 ml);
  • children aged 4-6 years: 200-300 mg (approximately 2-3 ml);
  • children aged 7-12 years: 300-500 mg (about 3-4 ml).

The medicine must be administered 3-4 times a day.

After intravenous injection of the solution, a standard reaction occurs - a feeling of heat in the mouth, which then spreads throughout the body.

The solution is taken orally in 5-10% form, 2-3 times a day. For an adult, the portion size is 10-15 ml, and for a child - 5-10 ml.

Use Calcium chloride during pregnancy

There are no adequate and carefully controlled tests regarding the safety and effectiveness of calcium chloride in pregnant women. Therefore, it is only permitted to be used during pregnancy in situations where the benefit to the woman outweighs the risk of complications to the fetus.

During lactation, the drug may be taken.

Contraindications

Main contraindications:

  • the presence of thrombosis or a tendency to develop it;
  • thrombophlebitis;
  • the presence of a pronounced degree of atherosclerosis;
  • hypercalcemia (hyperfunction of the parathyroid gland).

Side effects Calcium chloride

As a result of intravenous injection of the medicinal solution, bradycardia may develop, and in case of too rapid injection, ventricular fibrillation may be expected. Local manifestations are hyperemia or pain along the vein.

Side effects when taking the solution orally: heartburn, vomiting or nausea and epigastric pain, as well as the development of gastritis.

Overdose

In case of intoxication, side effects are potentiated, and tachycardia and suppression of cardiac function are also observed.

Treatment is aimed at eliminating the symptoms that have arisen.

Interactions with other drugs

Calcium chloride can be prescribed in combination with antiallergic drugs.

On the contrary, it is prohibited to take the drug with tetracyclines.

In case of combined use with drugs-blockers of Ca channels, their properties are weakened. Combination with quinidine can inhibit intraventricular conduction and increase the toxic effect of quinidine.

When using cardiac glycosides for therapy, it is prohibited to use the solution parenterally, as this may potentiate the cardiotoxic effect.

Special instructions

Calcium chloride is very often used as a facial cleanser. Many women consider this solution to be the best peeling agent used at home - it is very cheap, but at the same time effectively removes blackheads from the face, and also has a rejuvenating effect on the skin.

When using the solution for medical purposes, there are also no negative reviews about it. By replenishing the deficiency of the element Ca2+, it helps stabilize many functions important for life.
