Batrafen is a drug for the treatment of fungal skin lesions. Let's consider in more detail its instructions, indications for use, side effects, dosage. The drug belongs to antimicrobial and antiparasitic drugs. Clinical and pharmacological group - antifungal agents for the treatment of fungal diseases.
Batrafen contains the active substance - ciclopirox with a wide spectrum of action against fungal microorganisms. Fungi of the genus Candida, histoplasma, pathogens of mycetoma, trichophytosis, epidermophytosis are sensitive to it. Antibacterial activity is manifested in the form of sensitivity to mycoplasma, trichomonas and gram-negative flora.
Indications Batrafen
The drug is effective in the treatment of fungal infections of the skin and nails, onychomycosis. Indications for use are determined by the activity of its components. The drug can be used in complex therapy of varying severity of skin diseases, yeast dermatoses, epidermophytosis. It is used as prescribed by a doctor.

Release form
Batrafen is available in two forms:
- Nail polish (3.6 g bottles) – 1 g of polish contains 8 mg of ciclopirox. The auxiliary components are: ethyl acetate, butylhydromaleate copolymer, isopropanol and others.
- Cream for application to the skin (tubes of 15, 20 g) – 1 g of cream contains 10 mg of ciclopirox olamine. Additional substances: octadecyl and myristyl alcohol, phenylcarbinol, α-hydroxypropionic acid, sorbitan isostearate, liquid paraffin.

Pharmacodynamics
The topical antifungal agent has a broad spectrum of action against harmful microorganisms. Pharmacodynamics indicate activity against:
- Trichophyton (rubrum, mentagrophytes, verrucosum, tonsurans, quinckeanum, equinum, oncentricum, epilans, ferrugineum, gallnae, Schoenleinii, soudanense, terrestre, violaceum)
- Microsporum (canis, gypseum, audouinii, langeroni, nanum)
- Epidermophyton floccosum
- Candida (albicans, tropicals, krusei, parapsilosis, pseudotropicalis, lipolytica, quiliermondii, brumpti, utilis, viswanathii)
- Torulopsis glabrata
- Aspergillus (flavus, niger)
- Penicillium (chrysogenum, fumigalus, notatum)
- Absidia corymbifera
- Madurella (grisca, mycetomi)
- Allescheria boydii
- Cladosporium (carrionii, trichoides)
- Philophora (jeanselmei, pedrosoi, gougeroti)
- Leptosphacria senegalensis and many other microorganisms.
The therapeutic effect is based on inhibiting the entry of fungi into cells and inducing the removal of components necessary for vital activity and growth from its cells. The antibacterial effect is manifested in relation to most gram-negative and gram-positive pathogens. Ciclopirox inhibits the growth of trichomonads and mycoplasma.
Pharmacokinetics
The drug is intended for the treatment of fungal infections of various etiologies and severity. Pharmacokinetic data indicate the suppression of significant fungal concentrations with a single application. The maximum plasma concentration is observed for Candida fungi, dermatophytes, yeast-like and mold fungi.
Dosing and administration
Batrafen is used externally. The method of application and dosage depend on the doctor's prescription and indications. The ointment is applied to the skin areas affected by the fungus once a day until complete recovery.
Before applying the varnish, it is necessary to remove the maximum amount of the affected nail, and process the remaining nail plate with a file, creating an uneven surface. During the first month of treatment, the varnish is applied every other day, in the second month - 2 times a week, and in the third - once every 7 days. That is, the duration of treatment is on average 3 months, but should not exceed six months.
Use Batrafen during pregnancy
Treating fungal infections in expectant mothers is difficult, as many medications are prohibited. Batrafen is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation. To date, there is no clinical experience and reliable data on the safety of using the ointment. The drug is not prescribed for patients under 10 years of age.
Contraindications
As a rule, antifungal drugs are prescribed by the attending physician, who takes into account the individual characteristics of the patient's body and the severity of the fungal infection. Batrafen has a number of contraindications for use:
- Individual intolerance to active components
- Pregnancy and lactation
- The patient is under 10 years old
If the drug is used by patients with contraindications, then adverse reactions occur, which complicates the treatment process.
Side effects Batrafen
If the doctor's recommendations are not followed, the antifungal agent causes side effects. As a rule, these are local allergic reactions:

- Burning
- Skin irritation
- Peeling
- Hyperemia of the skin
- Peeling nails (when using varnish)

Overdose
Despite the fact that Batrafen is an antifungal drug and has contraindications for use, there are no cases of overdose. In rare cases, prolonged use of the ointment can cause skin allergic reactions.

Interactions with other drugs
The medication is used locally, that is, it is applied to the skin and nails affected by the fungus. Interaction with other topical medications is contraindicated, as it can provoke allergic reactions.
Batrafen is approved for use with systemic antifungal agents. This interaction increases the effectiveness of both forms of the drug.
Storage conditions
To preserve the pharmacological properties of the drug, it is necessary to observe the storage conditions. Both forms of Batrafen (varnish, ointment) should be kept in a place protected from sunlight and inaccessible to children. The recommended storage temperature should not be higher than 25°C.
If the above recommendations are not followed, the medication loses its medicinal properties and is prohibited for use.

Shelf life
Batrafen can be used for 36 months from the date of manufacture. The expiration date is indicated on the packaging, the tube with the ointment and on the bottom of the bottle with the varnish. After this period, the medicine is prohibited for use and must be disposed of.
