Bagotirox is a drug that belongs to the clinical and pharmacological group of thyroid hormonal drugs. Let's look at the instructions for use of the drug, in what cases Bagotirox is prescribed, contraindications, dosage and possible side effects.

Indications Bagothyrox

Indications for use of Bagotirox are based on the action of the active substance of the drug. Bagotirox is prescribed for:

The drug is effective in combination therapy, as it interacts with many drugs. The drug is used to test thyroid function, i.e. thyroid suppression. In case of hypothyroidism and pituitary gland lesions, diagnostics of the adrenal cortex are performed. Bagotirox is not prescribed for adrenal cortex insufficiency.

Release form

Bagotirox is available in tablets. One package contains one blister of the drug with 10 tablets. The tablets are rectangular with notches on each side and embossing. The drug is available in 50, 100 and 150 mcg. The dosage indicates the volume of the active substance - sodium levothyroxine.

One Bagotirox tablet contains: sodium levothyroxine, dye, lactose monohydrate, quinoline yellow, powdered cellulose, sodium croscarmellose. Manufacturers produce Bagotirox in cardboard packages, one container contains 1000 packages of the drug.

Pharmacodynamics

Pharmacodynamics Bagotirox is the biochemical effects and physiological actions that occur with the substances of the drug when they enter the body. The active substance is partially converted into triiodothyronine and is metabolized in the kidneys and liver. The rest of the sodium levothyroxine passes into the body's cells and affects metabolism, growth and tissue development.

If the drug is taken in small doses, it affects protein metabolism due to its anabolic effect. Bagotyrox stimulates tissue growth, so the body experiences a constant need for oxygen. Sodium levothyroxine improves the work of the cardiovascular system, nervous system, accelerates metabolism. An increased dosage of Bagotyrox inhibits the hormones of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. After 7-14 days of regular use of the drug, a positive therapeutic effect can be observed, which will remain even after Bagotyrox is discontinued.

Pharmacokinetics

Pharmacokinetics Bagotirox is the processes that occur with the drug after its use. That is, absorption, distribution, metabolism and the period of excretion. After oral administration, about 80% of sodium levothyroxine is absorbed. Bagotirox should be taken before meals, since food intake reduces absorption. The maximum concentration of the drug in the blood serum is observed 5-6 hours after its administration. About 90% of the drug binds to blood proteins.

Monodeiodination occurs in various tissues of the body and is more than 80%. The drug is metabolized in the kidneys, liver, brain and muscular system. Bagotirox is excreted with bile and urine. The half-life and excretion period depend on the dose taken.

Dosing and administration

The method of administration and dosage of Bagotirox are prescribed individually for each patient and depend on the symptoms of the disease and the age of the patient. According to the instructions, the drug should be taken one tablet before meals. Do not chew the tablets and drink plenty of liquid. The daily dose of the drug depends on the indications for the use of Bagotirox.

  • If the drug is prescribed to patients under 50 years of age who do not have cardiovascular diseases, then the dose of Bagothyrox is 1.5-1.8 mcg/kg.
  • Infants are given a daily dose of the drug before feeding. The dosage is selected by the doctor, and it depends on the baby's weight and test results.
  • For patients with chronic hypothyroidism, 12-12.5 mcg of the drug per day is prescribed. The dosage is gradually increased and depends on the patient's condition during the use of Bagotirox. Please note that with hypothyroidism, treatment and prevention with Bagotirox are quite long.
  • If Bagotirox is taken for thyrotoxicosis, then complex therapy with thyreostatics is prescribed. The duration of such treatment is determined by the doctor, relying on the patient's test results.

Use Bagothyrox during pregnancy

The use of Bagotirox during pregnancy is possible only with the permission of a doctor and in the case when the therapeutic benefit of the drug for the mother is much more important than the potential risk to the baby. If a woman took Bagotirox before pregnancy for hypothyroidism, then the drug should be continued during pregnancy and lactation. During pregnancy, the doctor increases the dosage.

If combined treatment with antithyroid drugs is prescribed during pregnancy, then taking Bagotyrox is contraindicated. Since, unlike sodium levothyroxine, antithyroid drugs penetrate the placental barrier and can cause hypothyroidism in the child.

Contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Bagotirox are sensitivity of the body to the active substance of the drug. The drug is prohibited for use in thyrotoxicosis and myocarditis. Bagotirox is replaced by a safer drug with a similar therapeutic effect and pharmacodynamics. The drug is contraindicated in adrenal cortex insufficiency.

In case of diabetes mellitus, arrhythmia, angina pectoris and long-term hypothyroidism, Bagotirox is prescribed with special caution and only with a doctor’s permission with an individual selection of dosage.

Side effects Bagothyrox

Side effects of Bagotirox occur with an overdose of the drug or improper use. Very often, side effects occur in patients who take Bagotirox, but have contraindications to its use. The main side effects manifest as skin dermatitis, that is, an allergic reaction.

Correct use of the drug, which is carried out under medical supervision with compliance and adjustment of the dosage, will prevent the occurrence of side effects. Side effects are treated symptomatically and require adjustment of the dosage of the drug.

Overdose

Bagotirox overdose occurs when the dosage of the drug is not followed or during long-term treatment. The main symptoms of overdose are similar to the symptoms of thyrotoxicosis, these are heart rhythm disturbances, increased sweating and appetite, diarrhea, flatulence, heart pain, weight loss, and others.

Treatment of overdose depends on the severity of symptoms. If symptoms are minor, the doctor adjusts the daily dose of Bagotirox, reducing it. Sometimes it is recommended to interrupt treatment with the drug for several days so that the symptoms of overdose go away. After the disappearance of side effects and symptoms of overdose, Bagotirox is resumed, but with a lower daily dose.

Interactions with other drugs

Interaction of Bagotirox with other drugs is possible only for medical reasons and when the drug is used in combination therapy. Let's consider how Bagotirox interacts with other drugs.

  • Sodium levothyroxine enhances the therapeutic effect of indirect anticoagulants. Therefore, with such interaction, the dosage of the latter should be reduced.
  • When interacting with tricyclic antidepressants, Bagotyrox enhances their effect, so the doctor must adjust the dosage of the drugs.
  • Bagotyrox significantly reduces the effectiveness of cardiac glycosides. And when used with cholestyramine and colestipol, the concentration of sodium levothyroxine in the blood plasma decreases. This occurs due to a decrease in the level of absorption of the drug in the intestine.
  • With estrogen-containing drugs, it is necessary to increase the dosage of levothyroxine sodium due to the increase in thyroxine-binding globulin. And when interacting with somatotropin, the closure of the epiphyseal growth zones is accelerated.
  • When used with phenobarbital or rifampicin, the rate of excretion of levothyroxine sodium increases, so an increase in the dose of Bagothyrox is required.

Storage conditions

The storage conditions of Bagotirox are described in the instructions for the drug and must be followed. The drug must be stored in a dry, dark place, out of the reach of children. The storage temperature should not exceed 25°C.

Failure to comply with storage conditions leads to spoilage of the drug and loss of its medicinal properties. In this case, it is necessary to stop using Bagotirox, as overdose symptoms and side effects may occur.

Special instructions

Bagotirox is prescribed to patients with decreased thyroid function and as a means of replacement therapy for its diseases. The thyroid gland is an endocrine organ that accumulates and produces iodine-containing hormones. Diseases and lesions of the thyroid gland disrupt the regulation of metabolism in the body. Bagotirox allows normalizing hormone production and treats thyroid dysfunction.

Bagotirox is a drug that helps cure thyroid diseases and normalize its production of hormones. The drug is prescribed by a doctor with the selection of an individual dosage and duration of treatment. Bagotirox has a minimum of side effects, which makes it an effective drug for people with reduced functions and thyroid lesions.

Shelf life

The expiration date of Bagotirox is indicated on the packaging of the drug and is 24 months from the date of manufacture. After the expiration date, the drug must be disposed of. Expired drugs are prohibited from being taken, as this will lead to the appearance of uncontrolled side effects.
