Nowadays, the following things are very important in treatment: price and effectiveness. Abrol combines these two qualities, since it has a low cost and effective therapeutic functions.

The main feature that distinguishes Abrol is that it quickly eliminates cough of bronchial origin. In addition, contraindications apply only to children under a certain age, pregnant women, nursing mothers and people with increased sensitivity to the components of the drug.

Regarding the cost-effectiveness of Abrol, it can be said that it is among the first among mucolytic agents.

Indications Abrol

Abrol belongs to a series of mucolytic drugs, the international name of which is Ambroxol.

Its therapy is aimed at solving problems associated with acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases related to the violation of bronchial secretion and the reduction of mucus movement. That is, the main area of the drug's fight against the disease is the lungs and bronchi.

Due to its functional features, Abrol effectively eliminates cough and hoarseness and improves breathing. More precise information regarding indications depends on the form of its release, of which there are many in this case.

Release form

Abrol is available in several forms: tablets and syrups (1 bottle - 15/5 ml, 2 bottles - 30/5 ml).

The difference between these types of Abrol is not only in the form of release, but also in age restrictions, namely:

  • the tablet form is intended for children not younger than 12 years old,
  • in the form of syrup it is allowed to give to children from 1 year old.

The form of release of this drug naturally determines the methods of application, dosage and duration of the course of treatment. The action of all types of Abrol is the same, that is, expectorant.

Pharmacodynamics

Abrol is a mucolytic agent, the main feature of which is its expectorant effect.

Its action is aimed at the removal and elimination of sputum by activating the activity of serous cells of the glands located on the mucous membrane of the bronchi, while the mucous and serous enzyme of sputum is regenerated. Thanks to such a drug as Abrol, the body restores the production of components that break down the bond of mucopolysaccharides in sputum. Resumption of the rheological functions of sputum is carried out under the influence of Abrol on the formation of surfactant, during which the viscosity of sputum decreases, its adhesion to the mucous membrane of the bronchus decreases. The drug acts in an activating way on the ciliated epithelium, and as a result, the evacuation function increases. With active movement of the cilia, adhesion of the bronchi decreases, which contributes to the mucociliary course.

Abrol has a local anesthetic and weak antitussive effect. In addition, the effect on the metabolism of arachidonic acid, freely removes oxidation in the area of inflammation. And also enhances the effect of antibacterial drugs.

Pharmacokinetics

Abrol is quickly excreted from the gastrointestinal tract. C max is detected in the blood after 1-3 hours. The drug is bound to albumin by almost 90%. Metabolism occurs in the liver, during which glucuronidation produces a metabolite. CYP3A4 controls the metabolism of Abrol to dibromanthranilic acid. The half-life ranges from 10 to 12 hours. The free form of the drug reaches 6%, 26% is the amount of conjugates in the urine. In the case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the concentration of Abrol increases, which provokes an increase in its content in the blood plasma by 3 or more times. Abrol is excreted in the urine, partially in the feces.

Dosing and administration

Abrol is used, regardless of its form of release, exclusively orally, as well as during or after meals. More specific information is divided into 3 categories, based on the type of release of the drug:

  • Abrol tablet form (from 12 years): 1 tablet three times a day. A faster effect is achieved with this dosage: 2 tablets twice a day. Duration of treatment is 4-14 days,
  • syrup (15/5 ml):
    • children from one to two years old: 2.5 ml twice a day,
    • from 2 to 6 years: 2.5 ml three times a day,
    • from 6 to 12 years old: 5 ml divided into 2 or 3 doses per day.

The period of application is up to 14 days,

  • syrup (30/5) children from 12 years old and adults should take Abrol 2 times a day, where the daily dose is 10 ml. After 2 weeks, the dose is halved.

Use Abrol during pregnancy

Abrol, despite its many advantages, still has some disadvantages, and they are related to the effect on the fetus. Can it be taken during pregnancy? Yes, but only in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and then only if, in the opinion of the doctor, the benefit provided by the drug outweighs the possible risk. As for the first trimester, there is not enough information in medicine regarding the effect of Abrol components on the health of the child during this period of pregnancy.

Abrol is not recommended to be taken not only during pregnancy, but also during breastfeeding, as this drug enters the mother's milk. This means that breastfeeding should be stopped during the period of taking the drug.

Contraindications

We discussed the use of Abrol during pregnancy and breastfeeding a little higher. Also, Abrol should not be taken in case of:

  • hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

If the form of release of Abrol is syrup, then it is forbidden to use:

  • as a result of fructose intolerance,
  • in case of severe renal impairment,
  • if the child is under 12 months old.

The tablet form of Abrol or in the form of syrup 30 mg/5 ml is contraindicated for children under 12 years of age.

In any case, before purchasing any medications, you should consult a doctor.

Side effects Abrol

Abrol is usually well tolerated. But again, it all depends on the individual characteristics of the body. In addition, side effects are extremely rare, which include:

  • allergic reaction similar to hives,
  • skin itching or other dermatological changes,
  • changes in taste,
  • dyspeptic manifestations,
  • bowel movements,
  • a feeling of dryness in the throat and mouth.

In case of skin allergic reactions, the use of Abrol should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. It is quite possible (or rather more than likely) that the patient is allergic to the substances included in Abrol.

Overdose

No overdose data have been recorded. If Abrol is used according to the recommendations specified in the instructions, then an overdose is impossible, as it has been established by doctors and the developers of the drug.

If any negative manifestations occur during or after taking the drug, symptomatic therapy is performed. As a result of the appearance of various symptoms, allergic processes to certain components of the drug are usually detected. But, be that as it may, it is necessary to consult a doctor, since cases of overdose have not been encountered in medical practice.

Interactions with other drugs

Naturally, a doctor prescribing complex treatment selects medications in accordance with their therapeutic functions and chemical properties. Namely:

  • Abrol increases the content of bronchial secretions:
    • erythromycin,
    • cefuroxime,
    • amoxicillin.
  • Abrol is absolutely incompatible with other drugs intended to eliminate cough, since it disrupts the functioning of mucociliary transport in an environment where mucus production is significantly increased, which causes stagnation within the pulmonary tree.

Storage conditions

The tablet form and syrup require standard storage conditions:

  • dry place,
  • lack of light,
  • the air temperature should not exceed 25°C.

Abrol should be kept out of the reach of children.

The drug itself should be stored in the original packaging with the attached instructions as follows:

  • the packaging indicates the date of manufacture and shelf life of the drug,
  • if the instructions are lost, you will have to find out about how to use Abrol in other ways (for example, on the Internet),
  • On tablet forms, or more precisely on the plate itself, the inscriptions become less visible over time, and sometimes it is completely impossible to determine the name of the drug.

Shelf life

Abrol is valid for 2 years if stored properly. If the bottle is opened (if the form of release is syrup), the shelf life of the medicine is reduced to 28 days, since the bottle no longer has the necessary tightness when closed, as a result of which the active components of the drug lose their therapeutic properties. From which it follows that after 28 days, the use of Abrol makes no sense. If the medicine has expired, it should be thrown away.
