Ophtholik is a combination of two active ingredients: polyvinyl alcohol and povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone). These substances are hydrophilic polymers and are widely used in ophthalmology to create hydrating and moisturizing eye drops.
The main purpose of Ophtholik is to moisturize and protect the surface of the eye. This drug is usually used to relieve dry eyes, discomfort and irritation caused by external factors (e.g. Prolonged wearing of contact lenses, working at a computer, exposure to aggressive environment).
Polyvinyl alcohol and povidone form a thin gel-like layer on the surface of the eye that helps retain moisture and prevent evaporation. This moisturizing action helps reduce the sensation of dry, irritated and tired eyes.
The drug Oftolik is available as eye drops, which are usually applied as needed several times a day into the conjunctival sac of the diseased eye.
It is important to note that Oftolik should only be used as prescribed by a doctor, and it is not recommended to use it simultaneously with other eye medications without consulting a specialist.
Indications Oftolica
- Dry Eye Syndrome: Ophtholic can be used to moisturize and soothe the eyes for dry eye syndrome, which is characterized by a sensation of dryness, sand or irritation in the eyes.
- Contact lensdiscomfort: People who wear contact lenses may experience discomfort and dry eyes at the end of the day. "Ophtholic can help moisturize the eyes and improve comfort while wearing lenses.
- Eye Irritation: The use of Ophtholik can help relieve eye discomfort and irritation caused by various external factors such as dust, wind, or heavy eye use while working at a computer.
- Post-operative recovery: Oftolik may be recommended to speed up eye recovery after ophthalmic surgeries or procedures.
- Protecting your eyes in aggressive environments: Using Ophtholik can help protect your eyes from harsh environmental factors such as strong wind, dust, or gas.
Release form
Oftolik is available in the form of eye drops, usually packaged in sterile droppers or vials with a dispenser. This form of release is convenient for use, allows accurate dosing of the amount of the drug and ensures its sterility.
The concentration of active ingredients (polyvinyl alcohol and povidone) in the solution may vary, so it is important to carefully read the instructions for use attached to the drug and follow the doctor's recommendations.
Pharmacodynamics
- Eye protection and moisturizing: Polyvinyl alcohol and povidone have properties that help moisturize the surface of the eye. They form a thin protective layer on the surface of the cornea, which helps to maintain the eye's natural hydration and prevents the evaporation of tear fluid.
- Reducing dry eye symptoms: Ophtholic is used for the symptomatic treatment of dry eyes because its ingredients help moisturize and protect the surface of the eyeball. This can reduce the sensation of dryness, discomfort and irritation of the eye.
- Maintenance of tear film stability: The tear film covering the surface of the eye plays an important role in protecting the eye and ensuring optimal conditions for vision. Ophtholic helps to maintain the stability of the tear film, which is especially important in dry eye syndrome or other conditions accompanied by impaired tear production.
- Improving contact lens comfort: Ophtholic can be used to help moisturize and comfort contact lens wearers. It helps reduce the sensation of dryness and discomfort that can occur with lenses, especially in low humidity conditions or when worn for long periods of time.
Pharmacokinetics
-
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA):
- Absorption: PVA, which is used in eye drops, is not normally absorbed into the systemic bloodstream when applied topically to the ocular surface. It remains on the ocular surface and forms a protective layer.
- Distribution and metabolism: PVA is not distributed in body tissues and is not metabolized.
-
Povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone):
- Absorption: Povidone, also known as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), has a high adsorption capacity but is not usually absorbed into the systemic bloodstream when applied topically to the eye. It can form complexes with various substances, which may improve their solubility and stability.
- Distribution and metabolism: Povidone is also not distributed in body tissues and is not metabolized.
- Excretion: Both components, polyvinyl alcohol and povidone, may be excreted through tear sweat and/or water flushing of the eyes.
- Time of action: Because both ingredients remain on the surface of the eye and form a protective layer, Oftolik's time of action can be long.
- Safety: Oftolic is generally well tolerated and does not cause systemic side effects.
Dosing and administration
The following are general recommendations for method of administration and dosage:
-
Method of Application:
- Stir the bottle of drops thoroughly before using Oftolik.
- Cover your lower eyelid with your finger and tilt your head back or lie on your back.
- Look up.
- Squeeze one or more drops into the pouch of the lower eyelid, avoiding contact of the tip of the dropper with the eye or the skin around the eye.
- Slowly release the eyelid and close the eye for a few seconds to distribute the drops evenly over the surface of the eye.
-
Dosage:
- It is generally recommended to use 1-2 drops in each eye, depending on the degree of dryness and discomfort.
- The number of applications may vary depending on individual needs, but generally apply drops 1-4 times a day or as needed.
-
Duration of treatment:
- The duration of Oftolik use is determined by a doctor and may vary depending on the nature and severity of dry eye symptoms.
- It is not recommended to use Oftolik without medical advice for a longer period of time than recommended by the doctor.
-
Special Instructions:
- Before using Oftolik, it is recommended to remove contact lenses and wait at least 15 minutes before reapplying them.
- Avoid touching the tip of the dropper with your eye or skin to avoid possible infection.
These are general recommendations, but always follow the instructions on the product packaging and consult your doctor or optometrist before using Ophtholic eye drops.
Use Oftolica during pregnancy
There is insufficient data on its safety during pregnancy, so it is recommended that you discuss its use with your doctor to assess the benefits of the drug and the potential risks to you and your baby.
Polyvinyl alcohol and povidone are commonly used in eye drops to lubricate the eye and relieve symptoms of dryness or irritation. They are considered topical and usually have minimal systemic effects. However, caution should always be exercised and a physician should be consulted when used during pregnancy.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity: People with known hypersensitivity to polyvinyl alcohol, povidone or other components of the drug should not use Ophtholic due to the risk of allergic reactions.
- Individual characteristics: Taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient, the doctor may decide to use or not to use the drug Oftolik in a particular clinical situation.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of Oftolik use during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established and its use in these cases should be evaluated and recommended by a physician.
- Pediatric age: The use of Oftolik in children and adolescents may be limited as the safety and efficacy of the drug in this age group have not been fully established.
- Eye infections: In the presence of an eye infection (e.g., conjunctivitis), use of Oftolik may be contraindicated as it may worsen the infection or make it difficult for antibiotics to reach infected tissues.
- Corneal damage: The use of Oftolik may be contraindicated in the presence of damage to the cornea of the eye, as it may lead to increased damage and complications.
Side effects Oftolica
- Short-term eye irritation: Some patients may experience short-term irritation, redness, or burning in the eye after using the drops.
- Temporary blurring of vision: In rare cases, temporary blurring of vision may occur after the use of Oftolik. This effect usually subsides on its own after a short time.
- Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions may develop in some patients and may manifest as itching, redness, swelling or rashes around the eyes. If signs of allergy occur, discontinue use and consult a physician.
- Foreign body sensation in the eye: Some patients may experience a foreign body sensation in the eye after using Oftolik. This effect is usually temporary and goes away on its own.
- Change in ocularsensitivity: Prolonged and frequent use of Ophtholic may cause a change in ocular sensitivity in some patients.
Overdose
Overdose of Oftolik eye drops (containing polyvinyl alcohol and povidone) is unlikely due to their local application and low risk of systemic absorption. However, some side effects may occur if large amounts of drops are swallowed.
Potential symptoms of overdose may include:
- Excessive salivation: Since povidone may cause irritation of mucous membranes, salivation may be increased if large amounts of eye drops are accidentally swallowed.
- Vomiting and nausea: Swallowing large quantities of drops may irritate the stomach, which may lead to vomiting and nausea.
- Diarrhea: Intestinal irritation and diarrhea may occur.
- Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, some people may have an allergic reaction to the components of the drops.
Interactions with other drugs
- Other eye medicines: When using Oftolik in combination with other eye medicines, it is recommended to observe the interval between their use. This may help prevent dilution or dilution of the active ingredients.
- Contact lenses: When using contact lenses, it is recommended to remove them before applying Oftolik and leave them removed for some time after application of eye drops. This may prevent potential exposure of contact lens material to the drug constituents.
- Drugs withmetals: Avoid concomitant use of Oftolik with other eye medications or eye care products containing metal ions, such as zinc or magnesium, to avoid possible interactions or undesirable effects.
- Preparations with oils: Avoid using Oftolik together with oil-based eye preparations, as the oils may interfere with the even distribution of the drops on the eye surface.
