Opatanol is an anti-allergic medication used for ophthalmic procedures.
The component olopatadin has powerful selective antihistamine and antiallergic properties and several mechanisms of therapeutic effect. The substance prevents the histamine release processes (the main mediator of allergic symptoms in humans) and does not allow stimulation of cytokine production through the epithelial cells of the human conjunctiva, which develops under the influence of histamine.

Pharmacodynamics
The drug is a means that selectively slows down the H1-terminations of histamine, and in addition prevents the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells. It has a powerful anti-allergic effect.
Pharmacokinetics
After local use, systemic absorption of the drug is low. The level of plasma Cmax is noted after 120 minutes.

Use Opatanol during pregnancy
Information regarding ophthalmic use of olopatadin in pregnant women is limited or absent. Tests involving animals revealed reproductive toxicity in the case of systemic intake. Olopatadin is forbidden to use in case of pregnancy or in women who are in reproductive age who do not use contraception.
Animal testing determined that the drug passes into the mother's milk when taken orally, so there is a likelihood of risk for infants and newborns. Because of this, the drug is not used for HB.
