The metabolism of butamirate is due to its hydrolysis to the state of 2-phenylbutyric acid, as well as diethylamino-ethoxy-ethanol. These decay products also have antitussive properties.

Butamirate together with its degradation products has an almost maximum (about 95%) binding to plasma proteins, which explains the long half-life of these products, as well as the prolonged antitussive effect on the body. The substance is excreted mainly with the help of kidneys.
