This European plant loves well-moistened soil, often found on the banks of natural and artificial reservoirs, in marshy areas, on forest edges and mountain slopes. In medicine, the rhizomes of the plant with roots are used, which have a strong specific aroma, the presence of which valerian owes to bornyl-isovaleric acid.

Pharmacodynamics
The infusion of medicinal raw materials has a calming, moderate vasodilatory and hypotensive effect, relaxes the smooth muscles of the digestive and urinary organs. It has a mild choleretic and stimulating effect on the functions of the secretory glands of the gastrointestinal tract.
Regular use of the infusion promotes gradual stabilization of the nervous system, in particular, the process of falling asleep and normalizing night sleep, reducing anxiety and restoring emotional balance.
Sedation is provided primarily by the complex isovalerian-borneol ether, as well as valepotriates and alkaloids: valerine and chatinine.
