Pharmacodynamics
The medicine is made from plant materials and has laxative properties, affecting the peristaltic activity of the colon.
The medicinal effect is provided by anthra- and other glycosides, transiting after taking the capsule inside through the stomach with the small intestine, without being absorbed. Inside the colon, anthraglycosides are subject to breakdown under the influence of intestinal microflora, transforming into active derivatives - anthrones and anthranols, which irritate the interoreceptors of the colon, thereby stimulating its peristalsis and accelerating the process of removing intestinal contents.
Senadeksin prevents the absorption of water with electrolytes. The osmotic effect allows to increase the volume of feces, as well as the force of filling pressure, due to which the stimulation of peristalsis is improved.
The effect of the drug develops after 6-11 hours. If the drug is used for a long time, the intensity of the medicinal effect may decrease (due to a decrease in potassium levels in the blood).
Pharmacokinetics
The metabolites of anthraglycosides contained in senna are practically not absorbed. Their excretion occurs mainly with feces, and a smaller part of the substance is excreted with urine. In addition, the drug is excreted with sweat, and can also (in small quantities) pass into breast milk.
Dosing and administration
The medication should be taken orally, in the morning or evening, with plain water.
For adolescents (aged 12 years and over), the medicine is prescribed in a dose of 2 tablets once or twice a day. The maximum permissible daily dose is 4 tablets.
Elderly people should begin treatment by taking 1 tablet per day.
Use Senadexina during pregnancy
Senadeksin is prohibited during lactation or pregnancy.
