Pharmacodynamics

The drug belongs to the category of nitroimidazoles with a pronounced antibacterial effect. Secnidox has a bactericidal effect (most active against unicellular microorganisms such as: Trichomonas vaginalis, dysenteric amoeba and intestinal lamblia) and amoeboid (in the entire intestine) effect. The pharmacodynamic effect occurs as a result of the penetration of the active substance into the middle of the microorganism. There, thanks to the 5-nitro group, secnidazole is restored and cellular DNA begins to work. The microorganism cell dies due to damage to the structure of the spiral form, destruction of threads and suppression of the integrity of nucleotides. The drug helps to increase the resistance of the tumor to the effects on it, and the patient becomes especially sensitive to alcohol intake.

Pharmacokinetics

Once inside the body, the active substance penetrates the semi-permeable barrier between the blood and nervous tissue, and is then excreted into breast milk. Bioavailability is 80%, which makes the drug easy to take for patients and significantly simplifies the treatment regimen. Secnidazole is adsorbed in the gastrointestinal tract quite quickly without losing its properties.

Dosing and administration

Secnidox is taken immediately before meals, always drinking plenty of water. The dosage regimen for children and adults is different.

Adults:

For the treatment of trichomonas urethritis and vaginitis, as well as bacterial vaginitis, take 2 tablets of Secnidox once.

Two tablets of the drug should be taken once in the same way for acute amebiasis. If amebiasis is asymptomatic, has a cystic or focal form, the patient needs to take two tablets a day for at least three days.

To treat hepatic amebiasis, take 1.5 g of Secnidox every day for five days, dividing the dose into several doses.

If there is lamblia in the body, the dosage will be two pills once a day. The medicine should be taken for three days.

Children:

The drug is not intended for use by children under twelve years of age.

For the treatment of giardiasis, the drug is prescribed by subtracting the dose of 30 mg multiplied by one kg of body weight.

Secnidox is also used to treat acute intestinal amebiasis. In focal, cystic or asymptomatic forms of the disease, the drug is taken every day for three days, at a rate of 30 mg / kg of weight.

For the treatment of hepatic amebiasis in a child, Secnidox should be taken daily at a rate of 30 mg/kg of body weight for five days.

Use Secnidoxa during pregnancy

There is no data on oral administration of the drug during pregnancy. Taking Secnidox during this period may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus.

The drug gets into the mother's milk and can harm the child. If it is necessary to use Secnidox during breastfeeding, lactation should be stopped immediately.

Contraindications

It is strictly forbidden to drink alcohol if you have been prescribed this medicine. If the patient's card contains a mention of blood dyscrasia, Secnidox should be discontinued, as reversible neutropenia is likely to occur. As a result, leukocytosis will increase, which will decrease as a result of discontinuing treatment.

Secnidox is not taken by lactating women and women during the entire gestation period, as well as by children under the age of twelve. The drug has no effect on the ability to drive a car or the speed of reflexes. If the patient has a history of hypersensitivity to any component of the drug, the drug should be replaced with another similar in effectiveness.

  • common: weakness;
  • gastrointestinal system: metallic taste, inflammation of the oral cavity, disorders;

Interactions with other drugs

Caution should be exercised when taking secnidazole simultaneously with indirect anticoagulants, as their combined use significantly increases the risk of bleeding.

The combination of secnidazole and disulfiram will cause paranoid reactions and psychosis. In addition, alcohol intake will cause a disulfiram-monopod reaction - abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, as well as dizziness.

The level of lithium in the body will increase when Secnidox is taken together with lithium preparations.

It is not recommended to take secnidazole with non-depolarizing muscle relaxants, such as vecuronium bromide.

If the drug is used to treat peptic ulcer disease, then in combination with amoxicillin, its activity against bacteria will increase.
