Oregano herb is an effective herbal remedy that is often used as an expectorant and diuretic.

Indications oregano

It is used both orally and externally.

Oral administration is performed for the following disorders:

  • pathologies in the respiratory system - bronchitis in the acute or chronic stage, and in addition, acute respiratory viral infections (as an expectorant);

  • intestinal atony, and in addition, improved appetite and digestive function;

Externally, the medicine is used to treat pyoderma with diathesis (atopic form of dermatitis) - as a component of combination therapy.

The properties of the drug allow it to be used as a general tonic and stimulating agent. Traditional medicine suggests oregano as a remedy for eliminating abscesses with furuncles, various rashes, eczema, itchy dermatoses, and also for stabilizing the menstrual cycle and healing wound surfaces.

Pharmacodynamics

Oregano helps activate the motor and excretory functions of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the bronchi. The plant belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It has expectorant, sedative, diuretic properties, and in addition, it enhances intestinal peristalsis. Along with this, it has an antimicrobial effect, increases appetite and increases the excretory capacity of the stomach - increases the amount of gastric juice produced.

When treating colds, oregano has a strong sedative and expectorant effect on the patient, its calming properties also help with neuroses with insomnia, headaches, and hysteria. When eliminating periodontitis, stomatitis or gingivitis, the drug has a hemostatic, analgesic, and sedative effect.

Dosing and administration

To make the tincture, take about 10 g of raw material (2 tablespoons), then pour hot boiled water (200 ml) over them and heat in a water bath (15 minutes is enough). Then leave for 1 hour to cool and then strain. Bring the resulting volume to 200 ml with plain water. The medicine must be taken according to the indications. A portion is a quarter/half a glass of tincture, it is taken twice a day before eating (15-20 minutes).

The tincture can also be used externally - it is used for baths or lotions (several procedures per day). Before treatment, shake the container with the tincture.

Use oregano during pregnancy

Oregano herb is prohibited to use during pregnancy (because it has a stimulating effect on the smooth muscles of the uterus), as well as during lactation.

Contraindications

Main contraindications:

  • increased level of gastric secretion;
  • children under 18 years of age;
  • diseases of the cardiovascular system;
  • ulcers in the stomach or duodenum.

Overdose
