Enema is an enema used to exert a laxative effect.
The combination of mono- and also disodium phosphates with a small amount of vegetable glue forms a liquid, whose pH level does not lead to irritation of the intestinal mucosa. The use of a hypertonic enema causes an influx of water to the intestinal lumen. After moistening, the softened masses of feces become larger in volume, leading to stretching of the walls of the large intestine, as a result of which, after 5–20 minutes, defecation occurs.
