Medulac has osmotic and laxative medicinal activity.
Indications Medulaca
It is used to prevent the following violations:
- constipation, which requires stabilization of the physiological activity of the intestine;
- intestinal dysbacteriosis;
- putrefactive variety of dyspepsia;
- enteritis with various etiologies.
In addition, it is used to soften stool before medical procedures - for example, in the case of operations in the colon area, after such procedures and in the presence of hemorrhoids.
Release form
The product is produced in the form of syrup, inside 0.25 l bottles, complete with a special measuring cup.
Pharmacodynamics
The active ingredient of this medicine, lactulose, is an artificial derivative of lactose. The substance cannot dissolve in the gastrointestinal tract because it lacks enzymes, and it is also practically not absorbed.
Lactulose is converted into α-hydroxypropionic, methanoic and ethanoic acid. This reduces pH values and increases the level of osmotic pressure inside the intestinal lumen, which increases the volume and stabilizes the consistency of feces. At the same time, the drug stimulates the activity of peristalsis of the large intestine. All this leads to the gradual elimination of constipation and restoration of the physiological rhythm of bowel movement. The development of a laxative effect is observed after 1-2 days from the start of use.
Lactulose promotes the excretion of bile acids, which subsequently reduces the levels of cholesterol in bile and blood.
The drug is also able to inhibit the growth of salmonella in the colon, and in addition to this, to improve the absorption of calcium salts and phosphates (while not weakening the absorption of vitamins with mineral components).
Pharmacokinetics
Medulac has a rather weak absorption, absorption is practically not carried out. The active element of the drug penetrates into the large intestine, where it is broken down under the action of intestinal flora.
The drug fully participates in metabolic processes when used in small doses. When large doses are administered, part of the drug is excreted unchanged.
Dosing and administration
The syrup should be taken orally. The selection of the therapeutic regimen and dosage portion is carried out taking into account the medicinal result and the personal characteristics of the patient.
In case of constipation and other disorders, the medicine is used once a day, it is recommended to use it in the morning, with breakfast. The development of the effect is observed after 1-2 days. If there is no effect from taking it within 2 days, the dose can be increased.
Children are given the syrup in a 5-10 ml portion, while adults are given it in a 15-45 ml dosage.
During the maintenance treatment cycle, it is necessary to slightly reduce the dosage, selecting it so as to obtain 2-3 bowel movements per day. The treatment course can last from 3 months.
If it is not possible to take the medicine orally, it is administered through an enema.

Use Medulaca during pregnancy
Even though there is limited information on the use of lactulose during pregnancy, there are no reports of fetal malformations or neo- or fetotoxicity. Animal testing does not indicate any direct or indirect harmful effects on pregnancy, fetal development, delivery, or postnatal development.
If necessary, it is permissible to consider options using Medulac during lactation or pregnancy.
Contraindications
Main contraindications:
- the presence of intolerance to the components of the medication;
- galactosemia;
- hypolactasia and fructose or galactose intolerance;
- intestinal obstruction.
Overdose
In case of intoxication, pain in the abdominal area and diarrhea occur.
To eliminate these symptoms, it is necessary to reduce the dose of the drug or stop taking it completely.
Interactions with other drugs
When the drug is used in combination with antacids or antibiotics, its therapeutic effect is weakened.
When used in combination with enteric-coated substances whose release depends on pH values, it is necessary to take into account that lactulose is capable of reducing intestinal pH values, thereby affecting the release of such drugs.
