Microorganisms that are almost impossible to see with the naked eye, more bacteria than helminths, protozoa that bring multiple troubles to a person, and may not manifest themselves at all - these are lamblia. But the modern pharmacological market is ready to come to the rescue in the situation of their detection, offering patients tablets for lamblia, which are presented on the shelves of pharmacies in a fairly wide range.
Giardia treatment with tablets
There is a common belief among the population that if protozoa have entered the human body at least once, then it is almost impossible to get rid of them. But experts assure that it is possible and necessary to fight this scourge. Today, doctors practice effective treatment of lamblia with tablets, which are produced in a large assortment by the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, choosing a medicine that will suit a specific patient both in terms of pharmacodynamics and price is not so difficult.
The medicine is selected in such a way that it is the safest and most effective in stopping, and also has the least amount of side effects, especially in light of the patient's concomitant diseases. The most effective medicine in the treatment of giardia with tablets can be called such a medicine as tinidazole.
In case of giardiasis diagnosis, Tinidazole is prescribed only by a doctor. Tinidazole is taken orally.
For adults, the dosage is four pills (500 mg each – 2 g in total) once a day.
For children, the dosage is slightly reduced and is calculated at 50-60 mg per kilogram of the baby's weight. The course of treatment is three days.
Contraindications to Tinidazole include hematopoiesis disorders, children under 12 years of age, and hypersensitivity to one or more components.
Trichopol is prescribed to children of three to seven years in a dosage of one to one and a half pills once a day. The course duration is up to five days. For children from seven to ten years old, the dosage increases to one pill taken twice a day. The duration of treatment is five days. For teenagers over ten years old and adults - two pills twice a day for five to seven days.
Tinidazole is not approved for use in cases where the patient has blood diseases, chronic renal and hepatic insufficiency, a tendency to epileptic seizures, tumors, impaired coordination of movement, pathology in the central nervous system, as well as in cases of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It would be useful to know that if a person is a carrier of lamblia, but there are no obvious symptoms, it is not advisable to carry out any drug treatment. In the case of asymptomatic passage of this invasion, therapy with herbal preparations, as well as taking diuretics (tubage therapy) and introducing special dishes into the diet will be more effective. In the case of a chronic course of the disease, doctors practice for the patient to undergo two blocks of therapeutic therapy. In addition to blocking and destroying these protozoa, the doctor usually prescribes immunostimulants and drugs that support the body - probiotics and prebiotics.
Immunostimulant Grippferon. The drug is administered intranasally (through the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx).
For children under one year of age, the medicine is given one drop in each nasal passage five times a day. One-time administration of 1,000 IU, daily dosage - 5,000 IU.
For children from one to three years old, two drops are prescribed in each nostril, three to four times a day.
For children aged three to 14 years, Grippferon is administered five to six times a day, two drops in each nasal passage.
Adults receive three drops in the nose, five to six times a day.
The duration of one course is five days.
Grippferon is contraindicated for patients suffering from hypersensitivity to its components, as well as those with a predisposition to allergies.
Probiotics are medicines, food products and supplements that have a normalizing effect on the intestinal flora. They are effectively used for dysbacteriosis, as they contain live bacteria that are as close as possible in composition to the normal human intestinal flora. The disadvantage of probiotics is that they poorly pass through the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract and the large intestine. These drugs include Linex, Probifor, Lactobacterin, Bifidumbacterin, Acepol and others.
Linex is taken two capsules three times a day, washed down with several sips of liquid. For newborns and children up to two years old, the dosage is three times a day, one capsule. In this case, the capsule is opened for newborns and given diluted with mother's milk or water. For children from two to 12 years old, Linex is prescribed from one to two capsules in three daily approaches.
Bifidumbacterin is used internally. Adults are prescribed five doses three times a day. The average duration of the treatment course is from two weeks to a month, in the most severe cases up to three months.
Prebiotics are substances that are not utilized in the upper sections of the gastrointestinal tract, but are considered catalysts for the growth of "useful" intestinal microflora, being an excellent nutrient medium for them. Such drugs include Insulin, Lactusan, Prelax, Lactrofiltrum, Bon-Sante and others.
Adults take Lactusan in syrup form one tablespoon twice a day (single dose is 10 ml). For children, the dosage is slightly less and is a teaspoon twice a day (single dose is 5 ml). Lactusan is taken during meals for one to two weeks.
In tablet form, the medicine is taken twice a day, four to five pills. For children over five, a single dose is three pills. Clinical effectiveness will be visible in a couple of days, but the full course of treatment can last from a week to two.
Indications for the use of tablets against giardia
Giardiasis can be attributed to a fairly common disease, which is also called "disease of unwashed hands". The bulk of the protozoa that provoke this disease are collected in the gallbladder, a smaller number of them "settle" in the small intestine. If giardia get into the area of the large intestine, where there are no favorable factors for their development, these protozoa "dress" in capsules, turning into cysts.
Most often, this disease affects children who have not yet fully mastered personal hygiene methods, although this diagnosis is not uncommon for adults.
Indications for the use of tablets against giardia:
- The frequency of stool increases.
- The stool becomes liquid with a greenish tint.
- Mucous inclusions are visible in the feces.
- Vomiting may occur.
- Sharp, acute pain in the middle and upper epigastric zone.
- Signs of fever.
- Symptoms of anorexia may occur.
- In some cases, a rash similar to measles is observed.
Pharmacodynamics of tablets against giardia
Medicines taken for the treatment of giardiasis belong to antiprotozoal drugs. The pharmacodynamics of tablets from giardia is expressed by the stimulation of pathogens to reduce their reproductive function, and is also aimed at the destruction of their gene structure.
Pharmacokinetics of tablets against giardia
The medicine is intended for oral use. The pharmacokinetics of the tablets against giardia is expressed in a fairly active absorption of the drug in the gastrointestinal tract, as soon as it gets there. After absorption, the active substance of the drug is quickly carried with the blood to all systems and organs. The placental buffer is also not an obstacle to its penetration, without any particular difficulties it reaches breast milk. Therefore, if the active substance of a particular drug is a highly toxic compound, it is strictly contraindicated to use it in the treatment of giardiasis in young children and in women during pregnancy and lactation. The components of the drug or the undecomposed fraction do not remain in the body for a long time, being completely excreted from it together with urine and feces.
Names of tablets for giardia
Treatment of giardiasis with tablets is represented by several groups of drugs that are prescribed and taken according to the protocol prescribed only by the attending physician. Names of tablets for giardiasis and their belonging to the existing groups:
- The first group of drugs – Nitroimidazoles – are the most popular medications.
- Metronidazole (Trichopolum) – is actively used in the treatment of giardiasis and other “stomach” bacteria. For example, Helicobacter pylori.
- Ornidazole (Tiberal) is a drug most often prescribed if signs of atopic dermatosis are clearly visible against the background of giardiasis.
- Tinidazole Albendazole (Nemozol) – usually prescribed in cases where, in addition to giardia, other helminths have been diagnosed.
- The second group of drugs are nitrofuran derivatives. Medicines of this category cope well with giardiasis. It is accompanied by pathology of the urinary tract (with pyelonephritis, cystitis and in case of damage to the genitourinary system by various types of yeast fungi).
- Nifuratel.
- Furazolidone.
- The third group of drugs are medicines containing acridine. Due to their high toxicity, drugs of this group are not recommended for children and adolescents.
- Quinarkin.
- Mepacrine.
Macmiror tablets for giardia
The main difficulty in treating this disease is that when lamblia enter the intestines, they encapsulate themselves, covering themselves with a kind of protective shell. And before destroying the microorganism, it is necessary to reach it by damaging the shell. To overcome such an obstacle, the drug must be highly effective. At the same time, it is almost impossible to avoid the toxicity of the drug.
At the present stage of pharmacology development, as gastroenterologists claim, the most active in terms of treatment and moderately toxic are Macmiror pills for Giardia. Due to this quality, it is widely prescribed to children, as well as to women during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Macmiror is a nitrofuran derivative, a powerful antimicrobial, antifungal and antiprotozoal agent that affects a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. It is quite effective against such strains as Helicobacter pylori and Papiliobacter, as well as gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. The drug does not linger in the body, but is completely excreted with urine.
When diagnosing giardia, Macmiror is prescribed to babies twice a day at a calculated dosage of 15 g per kilogram of the small patient's weight. For adults, the starting dose of Macmiror is two pills (or 400 mg), taken two to three times a day. The duration of the course of treatment is seven days.
Tiberal for giardiasis
Tiberal is an antiparasitic and antimicrobial drug that works effectively in stopping diseases caused by protozoa. Tiberal has proven itself to be excellent in treating giardiasis. The basic substance of Tiberal is ornidazole. The mechanism of action of the drug is quite simple: the active substance specifically affects the DNA of microorganisms, which provokes a failure of their genetic program, which in turn leads to blocking the reproduction program and, as a result, to the destruction of protozoa.
Tiberal for giardiasis is taken in small blocks - just a day or two. The medicine is administered to the body whole, without chewing, after meals, with plenty of liquid. The dosage taken directly depends on the patient's age and weight.
For babies whose weight has not yet reached 35 kg, the amount of medication taken is calculated using the formula - 40 mg per kilogram of the patient's weight. The medication is taken once a day.
Children weighing over 35 kg and adult patients are recommended to take 3 pills at once. It is advisable to take the medicine in the evening, before going to bed.
It is not recommended to use Tiberal if the patient has a history of:
- Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
- During pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.

Metronidazole for giardiasis
Metronidazole - its active component has passed the test for the destruction of such pathogenic bacteria as helicobacter pylori. It is still used to combat this pathogenic flora. This drug also belongs to the substances of antiprotozoal action, classifying it as a synthetic antibiotic of a wide range of damage. The active element of metronidazole affects the synthesis of protein in the cells of pathogenic flora, disrupting the normal course of this process, inhibits their cellular respiration.
Metronidazole is used for giardiasis internally, with or after meals. The pill is swallowed without chewing. The dosage of Metronidazole depends on the patient's age.
- For infants under one year of age, the daily dosage is 0.125 g.
- Children aged two to four years can be given a total of 0.25 g of metronidazole per day.
- For children aged five to eight years – 0.375 g per day.
- For adolescents over eight and adult patients – 1 g, divided into two doses.
The duration of Metronidazole intake is from five to seven days.

Furazolidone for giardiasis
Furazolidone is one of the nitrofuran derivatives. This substance is capable of actively influencing both pathogenic flora, which enters the human body in various ways, and protozoa, in which, under the influence of Furazolidone, the process of cellular respiration is disrupted, the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA) is inhibited, and then completely stops.
Due to the presence of furazolidone components in the patient's blood, the release of toxins by protozoa that poison the entire patient's body is suppressed. Furazolidone also activates the human immune system quite well.
Furazolidone is taken for giardiasis according to a simple scheme - 0.1 g four times a day. For children, the dosage is prescribed at the rate of 10 mg per kilogram of the baby's weight. The duration of administration is determined by the attending physician individually.

Tinidazole for giardiasis
Tinidazole is an effective antiprotozoal and antibacterial "weapon". The active substance of the drug acts directly on the DNA molecule of the simplest microorganism, which leads to their destruction. Tinidazole for giardiasis is taken orally. Getting into the gastrointestinal tract, the components of Tinidazole are almost completely and quickly absorbed into the mucous membrane and are quite actively distributed throughout all body systems. The effect of taking the drug occurs quite quickly.
The dosage of tinidazole for giardiasis for children is prescribed at the rate of 50-70 mg per kilogram of the baby's weight. For an adult patient, it will be 2 g, which corresponds to 4 pills.
Tinidazole also has contraindications:
- Individual intolerance to the components of the drug or nitroimidazole derivatives.

Zentel for giardiasis
Zentel is a derivative of benzimidazole carbamate. The drug inhibits the vital activity of protozoa. Zentel effectively suppresses tubulin polymerization, thereby catalyzing a failure in the metabolic processes that ensure the development and reproduction of such protozoa as lamblia, which leads to their destruction.
Zentel is taken for giardiasis together with food, preferably at a strictly fixed time.
When diagnosing this disease in children over three years of age and adults, Zentel is prescribed in the amount of 0.4 g once a day. The course of treatment is five days.
For children aged two to three years, the medicine is usually prescribed in the form of a suspension, the dosage is 10 ml per day, the medicine is taken once a day. The duration of treatment is up to five days - this indicator is adjusted by the attending physician.

Nemozol for giardiasis
Nemazol is an effective antihelminthic agent with a wide spectrum of action. Most often, it is prescribed to patients who, in addition to lamblia, have been found to have other types of helminths. Its active substance, albendazole, which is a derivative of benzimidazole carbonate, produces a systemic effect on the body of protozoan microorganisms, “breaking” their DNA, which leads to the death of the entire population. But not only pathogenic flora is exposed to negative effects, but also organs and systems of the human body. Therefore, this drug cannot be called completely safe, but its effectiveness in defeating helminths is significantly higher than in the work of other antiprotozoal agents. Therefore, it is necessary to weigh the pros and cons before starting to treat the problem with this drug.
Nemozol for giardiasis is taken orally, after the patient has eaten or with food (this way we achieve the greatest effect of the medicine). The pill should not be chewed. For children over two years old, the medicine is prescribed at a rate of 10-15 mg per kilogram of the baby's weight. It is taken once a day, the duration of the treatment course can be five to seven days. Adults are prescribed Nemozol in a dosage of 0.4 g (pill) or 20 mg (form of administration - suspension, one bottle).
Taking Nemozole is prohibited in the following cases:
- Pregnancy and lactation.
- Individual intolerance of the patient's body to benzimidazole derivatives.
- If the patient suffers from a retinal disease.
- The tablet form of Nemozole is prescribed to patients over three years of age, and from one year to three years of age, a suspension is prescribed.

Albendazole for giardiasis
In recent years, various benzimidazole derivatives have been increasingly used in the treatment of pathologies caused by helminths, in particular albendazole, which is classified as a broad-spectrum drug. A positive distinctive feature of this drug is that it equally effectively affects protozoa at all stages of their development. Albendazole in giardiasis slows down the process of glucose utilization by parasites, which leads to its deficiency. The drug also slows down the synthesis of ATP, which together leads to the death of parasites.
Today, albendazole is considered the most promising for giardiasis. Clinical studies have shown that its therapeutic effects are 40-50 times higher than those of tinidazole or metronidazole. After all, albendazole sulfoxide is a primary metabolite produced by liver enzymes under the influence of albendazole, and it has a systemic effect on the helminths' body, destroying it.
For giardiasis, albendazole is prescribed: to adults and children over 12 years old in the amount of 0.4 g per day. The therapeutic dose of the drug for children under 12 years of age is 15 mg per kilogram of the child's body weight. Albendazole is taken once a day, while the duration of administration is strictly individual and reaches six to seven days.
Albendazole does not have many contraindications:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding period.
- Hypersensitivity to albendazole.
Not so often, but still, albendazole can cause side effects:
- Pain in the epigastric region.
- Headache.
- Diarrhea and vomiting.
- Allergic manifestations in the form of skin rashes, itching.
- Increased activity of liver enzymes.
- Nausea.
- Leukopenia.
- Increased temperature and fever.

- The baby becomes more lethargic and apathetic.
- Starts to be more capricious.
- The child's appetite decreases.
- The skin becomes pale and waxy.
- At the same time, the skin looks dry, with “goose bumps”.
- Signs of dizziness or headache may occur.
- A coating appears in the mouth and on the tongue.
- The baby suffers from flatulence.
- On palpation, the liver is enlarged.
If even a few symptoms from this list are detected, you should immediately contact a doctor who, after examining the child, will prescribe pills for children against giardia. Usually, medications belonging to such groups of drugs as nitrofurans, tinidazoles, imidazoles are used for treatment. But only the attending physician can adequately prescribe treatment for a small patient. Self-medication is not worth it, since instead of the expected recovery, you can also get poisoning of the child's body with toxins that are present in most drugs.
In such cases, Macmiror (nifuratel) is actively used - pills for children against giardia. With their high activity in defeating protozoan microorganisms, they are one of the few that have relatively low toxicity, which is important for a small growing and developing organism. If Macmiror is ineffective, the doctor may reconsider the treatment and prescribe another drug, for example, Tiberal.
This is a highly effective medicine for the treatment of various invasions, including giardia. The drug is taken once a day, at night, for one to two days. For adults, the dosage is three pills (500 mg each, a total of 1.5 g). If the child weighs up to 35 kg, the dosage is calculated based on 25 mg per kilogram of the baby's weight, the drug is given to the toddler once a day. But there are other protocols for taking it. Only a specialist should prescribe this or that treatment regimen.
The drug tinidazole is used internally. The dose of the drug for children is calculated as 50 - 75 mg per kilogram of the body weight of the small patient. It is practiced in one dose for three days.
Enterosorbents, which work to bind and remove harmful chemical elements or toxic substances from the body, also play an important role in this treatment. For babies, such sorbents as smecta, lactofiltrum or activated carbon are usually recommended.
Method of administration and dosage
The schedule for taking medications designed to relieve the problem of giardiasis is prescribed strictly individually by the attending physician, but most instructions recommend the following method of administration and dosage:
When diagnosing giardiasis in children aged three to seven years, the medicine is prescribed one to one and a half tablets per day. The duration of therapy is five days. For children aged seven to ten years, the doctor prescribes one tablet twice a day. The course of treatment is five days. For teenagers over ten and for adults, the dosage is two tablets twice a day. The duration of treatment is from five to seven days.
Using Giardia Tablets During Pregnancy
The majority of drugs used in the treatment of giardiasis, in addition to being highly effective in killing protozoa, are also highly toxic. And due to their excellent ability to be completely absorbed and distributed throughout the body, including the placental layers and breast milk, such drugs are strictly prohibited for both children (young developing organisms) and women who are carrying a child or breastfeeding. The use of tablets for giardiasis during pregnancy is quite selective.
For example, Trichopol can be prescribed to pregnant women only after the first trimester, when the baby's main systems and organs have already formed, that is, after 12 weeks. But the drug should only be prescribed by a doctor and only for significant medical necessity.
In the case of using the above-described drug Macmiror, doctors practice its use both during the patient's pregnancy and during lactation. It is also prescribed in the case of the need to stop lamblia in children.
Contraindications to the use of tablets against giardia
Due to the high toxicity of drugs against protozoan parasites, these drugs also have multiple contraindications for the use of tablets against giardia.
- While carrying a child, some medications are acceptable for use from the second trimester of pregnancy.
- Lactation period.
- Parkinson's disease.
- Diseases of the circulatory system.
- Impaired coordination of movement.
- Liver dysfunction.
- Chronic renal failure.
- Alcoholism.
- Diseases of the central nervous system caused by organic pathology.
- Predisposition to allergies.

Side effects of giardia pills
Due to its high toxicity, side effects of lamblia tablets are observed. The intensity of their manifestation is usually associated with the ability of the human body to resist negative influences on its functioning.
When taking a drug aimed at destroying parasitic microorganisms, the following consequences may occur:
- Sleep disorders.
- Attacks of nausea leading to vomiting.
- Diarrhea and constipation.
- Dizziness.
- Temporary problems with hearing and vision may occur.
- Dry mouth.
- Cramps may occur.
- Headache.
- A decrease in the level of platelets and leukocytes in the blood plasma.
- Itching and redness of the skin.
- Hives.
- Candidiasis in women (progression of thrush).
- There may be a burning sensation and redness in the area of the vaginal opening.
Overdose
To date, there have been no cases of drug overdose reported in the fight against giardia. Therefore, only standard recommendations can be given. In case of side effects, it is worthwhile to: drink plenty of fluids, it would be a good idea to undergo dialysis, try to induce vomiting, give an enema to cleanse the patient's stomach and intestines.
Interactions of Giardia tablets with other drugs
In any situation where it is necessary to take different medications together, it is necessary to be careful and attentive to such combinations. The results of interaction of tablets from giardia with other drugs can be different. Their pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics can both mutually enhance and reduce their effectiveness, up to complete blocking of the therapeutic effect.
For example, the combined use of antihistamines with drugs that affect urine acidity can lead to:
- Shifting the pH characteristic towards an acidic environment enhances the pharmacological properties of antihistamines, but reduces their ability to be eliminated from the body.
- Shifting the pH characteristics towards an alkaline environment reduces the effectiveness of the drug, while its ability to be eliminated increases.
When used together with aminoglycosides, the pharmacological action of the former is enhanced. If it is necessary to combine drugs for the treatment of giardia with ristomycin or chloramphenicol, there is a significant inhibition of the process of reproduction of blood components. The combined use of these drugs with ethyl alcohol can provoke a disulfiram-like reaction of the body. To reduce the risk of hypertension, these drugs should not be used together with drugs related to monoamine oxidase inhibitors or antidepressants. For the same reason, they should not be combined with tyramine, ethionamide, ephedrine, phenylephrine and amphetamine.
The drugs work well in combination with sulfonamides and antibiotics.
Storage conditions for tablets against giardia
A dry room protected from direct sunlight is the main storage conditions for Giardia tablets. The room temperature should not exceed 25 degrees Celsius.
Best before date
Three years is the recommended shelf life for drugs that have antihistamine properties. The production numbers and expiration dates must be indicated on the packaging. In this case, it is important to strictly adhere to the recommended dates of use.
Unwashed hands disease – no one is immune from it. Ate poorly washed fruit, swam in an open body of water – and as a result – giardiasis. Some people suffer discomfort, embarrassed to admit that their body is affected by protozoan microorganisms. Giardia pills are an effective solution to the existing problem. Just do not self-medicate, the treatment protocol should be prescribed only by a specialist. There is no shame in sounding the alarm about your disease, it is shameful to do nothing, letting the disease take its course.
Good tablets for giardia
It is somewhat incorrect to describe the treatment of a person for giardiasis in a definitive way, because we are all so different. The same medicine can give slightly different results in different cases. If one organism gives an excellent result when using the drug, then for another patient the medicine has to be changed. Therefore, it would be incorrect to say unequivocally that these are good tablets for giardia, and this is not.
Medicine knows of cases when a patient could not get rid of this disease for many years, no matter what drugs he took. Perhaps the goal of simply destroying parasites is somewhat incorrect. In terms of treatment, two main tasks should be implemented: to cure the patient and protect him from relapses of this unpleasant disease. But the treatment should not only be effective, but also as safe as possible for the patient's body. As sad as it sounds, many doctors, concentrating on stopping the problem of their profile, somewhat forget about the body as a whole, ignoring the second - not to harm other organs and systems of the patient's body. Therefore, good tablets for giardia are those that not only effectively fight the problem that has arisen, but also those that do not harm health.
The instructions for the drugs do not hide the fact that the drugs used to destroy various protozoa, including lamblia, are highly toxic, which affects the entire body. That is, by treating one problem, the patient acquires another, which must be treated by another doctor. These toxins especially negatively affect the components of the blood and the liver. This is not a professional approach. A qualified doctor, before prescribing treatment, must weigh all the pros and cons, choosing the option that is most harmonious in terms of effectiveness and safety.
