A progesterone deficiency in a woman's body can lead to infertility, early termination of pregnancy, and menstrual cycle disorders. Of course, if there is a deficiency of this hormone, the doctor will first of all prescribe hormonal agents to compensate for the deficiency. But what can you do in such a situation? After consulting with a doctor, you can turn to folk medicine: herbs that increase progesterone have been known for a long time and are successfully used by many patients.
However, remember: treatment should be started only after taking hormone tests that confirm the lack of progesterone in the body. If this point is ignored, the consequences can be extremely negative.

Names of herbs that increase progesterone
List of herbs that stimulate progesterone production:
- angelica (angel grass);
- Vitex sacred;
- one-sided ortilia (orthilia secunda);
- cuff;
- raspberry, leaves;
- Astragalus membranaceus;
- cinnamon;

The pharmacodynamics of herbs that increase progesterone is based on their ability to affect the pituitary gland, thereby activating the synthesis of luteinizing hormone, which in turn gives impetus to the production of progesterone in the body. Let us recall that progesterone is produced in our body mainly by the corpus luteum, and during pregnancy - by the placenta.
The pharmacokinetics of progesterone-boosting herbs have been little studied to date.
Method of administration and dosage
Herbs to increase progesterone levels should be used in the second half of the cycle, that is, from the 15th to the 25th day of the monthly cycle, regardless of what goal you are pursuing - relief of the condition before menstruation, successful conception, normalization of the cycle or prevention of mastopathy.
If, along with progesterone deficiency, any other hormonal and sexual disorders occur, the use of herbs should be temporarily discontinued.
Herbs are usually taken as infusions, which are prepared according to the following principle: 1 tablespoon of herb per 200 ml of hot water. Infuse for 20-30 minutes, strain and drink in equal doses 2 to 3 times a day, preferably half an hour before or half an hour after meals. The infusion should be taken at the same time, if possible.
What do you need to know before starting herbal treatment?
- Take hormone tests and determine whether you really have a progesterone deficiency. Progesterone is usually taken in the second half of the cycle, around day 21-22. The test is taken in the morning, on an empty stomach.
- Consult your gynecologist about taking certain herbs.
- Evaluate contraindications to the use of herbs.
- Do not start herbal treatment at the same time as traditional hormonal treatment.
- Don't expect immediate results from herbal treatment. Usually, the effect of herbs becomes noticeable only after 1-2 months.
- In the next cycle after taking herbs, take repeated tests for hormonal levels to assess the dynamics of the treatment effectiveness.
- During menstrual bleeding and in the first half of the cycle, it is not recommended to take herbs that stimulate progesterone production.
- Herbal treatment should be carried out in 3 cycles in a row, followed by a break of 1 month.
- Herbs should not be poured with boiling water, but with hot boiled water with a temperature of about 80°C.
Overdosage with herbs that increase progesterone has not been described. However, dyspeptic disorders, diarrhea, and appetite disorders are possible.
Using Progesterone Boosting Herbs During Pregnancy
Why is progesterone level so important during pregnancy? If the amount of the hormone is below normal, it can pose a threat to the further course of pregnancy. A woman may experience a miscarriage, a frozen pregnancy, or a delay in the development of the baby in the mother's womb.
Often, the problem of progesterone deficiency during pregnancy is solved by a doctor, prescribing certain medications. As for herbs that increase progesterone, it should be noted that this amount of hormone should enter the body in strictly dosed quantities, which is quite difficult to comply with when taking herbal infusions.
If you still decide to use folk medicine recipes to increase progesterone, consult a doctor. Agree that pregnancy is not the best time for experiments: the result of self-medication can be unpredictable.
Contraindications to the use of herbs that increase progesterone
The use of herbs that increase progesterone has the following contraindications:

- tendency to thrombosis, active thromboembolism;
- pregnancy (only as prescribed by a doctor);

- condition after abortion.
It is best to consult with your doctor regarding the use of any herbal infusion that increases progesterone levels.
