Indications Ferrogradumeta

It is used for iron deficiency anemia as a therapeutic or prophylactic drug:

  • various types of bleeding, including metrorrhagia with menorrhagia, nosebleeds, hemorrhoidal bleeding or bleeding that develops during childbirth, and also that appears due to a perforated ulcer;
  • increased need for iron in women during lactation or pregnancy;
  • a diet that causes iron deficiency;
  • malabsorption, which is accompanied by diarrhea and gastrointestinal diseases.

Release form

The medicine is produced in tablets, 30 pieces per box (3 blister packs).

Pharmacodynamics

Ferrogradumet contains a large amount of iron sulfate inside a special filler (plastic matrix called Gradumet). The process of releasing the active element is controlled and gradual, after which the substance is absorbed taking into account the body's needs. The process occurs with minimization of gastric damage.

Iron sulfate is used in the processes of binding heme proteins (including myoglobin with hemoglobin, etc.), as well as non-heme enzymes (including transferrin with ferritin, etc.).

Pharmacokinetics

The absorption of the element from the gastrointestinal tract is not complete: 10% in a healthy person, and up to 30% in people with iron deficiency. After penetrating the blood, the substance is synthesized with the protein transferrin, which should deliver iron into the bone marrow and include it in the hemoglobin. The half-life of iron in the form of sulfate is about 6 hours.

Dosing and administration

Ferrogradumet should be taken orally, on an empty stomach, in the morning - approximately half an hour before breakfast. The tablets are swallowed whole and washed down with clean plain water; chewing them is prohibited.

The daily dose for an adult is a maximum of 1-2 tablets. The medicine must be taken for several months. After the abnormal parameters have stabilized, the treatment must be continued for another 2 months to replenish the iron supply.

Side effects Ferrogradumeta

Occasionally, taking the drug leads to the appearance of disorders in the gastrointestinal tract: nausea, pain in the epigastric region, vomiting, constipation, blackening of feces and diarrhea.

Due to the fact that the tablets have a slow release type, the development of intolerance is extremely unlikely. But if this does happen, you should try taking the drug after eating.

Signs of an allergy often appear in the form of redness, itching, or anaphylaxis.

Overdose

Poisoning with the drug can lead to vomiting, cyanosis, pallor, a feeling of fatigue or drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea with tarry or green stools, and also to the development of a state of shock.

In very severe cases of intoxication (use of a dosage of 180-300 mg/kg), collapse or death may occur. In this case, emergency medical care must be provided to the victim. The following procedures are carried out:

  • blocking iron absorption within the gastrointestinal tract;
  • X-ray of the peritoneum to determine the number of tablets remaining there;
  • removal of the drug through gastric lavage (using a large tube with a 0.9% NaCl solution), taking a laxative or vomiting. In extreme cases, surgery may be performed;
  • determination of serum iron values in the bloodstream, and in addition, performing chelation therapy using deferoxamine (if required).

Hemodialysis is not very effective in treating drug overdose.

Interactions with other drugs

Substances that inhibit iron absorption: tea and coffee (must be taken at least 1 hour apart), as well as milk or eggs (taken at least 1-2 hours apart), penicillamine, tetracycline, as well as drugs containing chloramphenicol and antacids (use at least 2-3 hours apart).

Iron medications affect absorption and reduce the effects of some anti-infective drugs from the quinolone group: norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin. It is necessary to observe at least a 2-hour interval between taking Ferrogradumet and any of these drugs.
