Release form
The most popular herbs with diuretic properties are considered to be the following: lingonberry leaves, horsetail grass, birch buds, and also bearberry. In addition, burdock root, juniper berries, creeping wheatgrass, and peppermint leaves. Along with this, also kidney tea (orthosiphon), lungwort, knotweed grass, and also plantain leaves.
The properties of folk diuretics are discussed using the example of horsetail herb.
Pharmacodynamics
Horsetail is a diuretic of plant origin. The bioactive components it contains (among them are saponins, salts, silicic acid, as well as organic acids and tannins) have various properties. Among them are anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antimicrobial and detoxifying (removes lead from the body). Silica salt creates colloids in urine, which prevent the crystallization of urinary stones.
The diuretic effect of the drug begins from the first day of its use and continues throughout the entire course of treatment, as well as during repeated courses (the body does not become accustomed to the drug).
Dosing and administration
Diuretics for facial swelling
Facial swelling can be eliminated with the help of folk diuretic remedies - this is a very effective and popular method of treatment.
Tea compresses are often used to eliminate puffiness under the eyes and on the face. It is necessary to soak cotton pads in tea and then apply them to the face and under the eyes. Regular tea bags can also be used instead of pads. If you use warm tea, it will help to relax the body, but using cool tea helps to increase the tone of the skin on the face. Both green and black tea can be used for the procedure.
Coffee ice can also help remove bruises and relieve swelling. To make it, use strong, freshly brewed coffee – pour it into molds and then put it in the freezer.
Edema is also well removed by various fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as greens. The most popular are: parsley, potatoes, rosemary and cucumbers.
To quickly eliminate swelling, apply any of the above products to your face for literally 5 minutes. Greens should be chopped for this, and vegetables should be cut into circles. To increase the effectiveness of these products, you can add green tea or lemon juice (a few drops).
Diuretic teas are also often used. Drinks made from horsetail, rose hips and other herbs work well. These remedies have additional benefits – they help strengthen the immune system, replenish the body’s vitamin supply, and improve digestion.
In addition, you can use a herbal tincture - take St. John's wort and plantain leaves with nettle, as well as rose hips (in equal quantities), and pour half a liter of boiling water over the mixture. Infuse the medicine for at least 1 hour. Drink the tincture throughout the day, in small portions.
Tincture of licorice root, lovage roots, and juniper berries is excellent for removing swelling. You need to take the same amount of all these components and chop finely. Then take 1 tablespoon of the mixture and pour in spring water (cold, 1 glass). Infuse the medicine in this form for at least 6 hours, and then boil it for about 15 minutes. Then let it cool and strain. Drink the tincture a quarter of a glass 5 times a day.
Rosemary water is also an excellent remedy - to make a tincture, you will need several large branches of rosemary, which need to be finely chopped, and then poured with hot water (but not boiling water; in the amount of 1 glass). The medicine should be infused in the dark, in a cool place, for at least 1 week. At the end of the period, strain the tincture and drink it as needed.
Watermelon is also a good diuretic. Not only its pulp can be useful, but also the rind with seeds. To make the medicine, you should thoroughly dry the watermelon seeds and rinds, and then grind them in a blender or meat grinder. The resulting powder should be taken for 1 month (three times a day, 0.5 teaspoon).
The following folk remedies can also help remove facial puffiness:
- plain water with apple cider vinegar added to it (1 teaspoon of vinegar per 1 glass of water);
- cranberry juice;
- tea made from the leaves of the medicinal dandelion;
- a decoction made from cherry stalks.
A decoction of watermelon rinds is also considered a folk diuretic. To make it, you need to grind the rinds (take 1 kg of the product), and then boil them in 1 liter of water until they are completely soft. Then strain the solution, and throw away the pulp. The resulting medicine should be drunk several times a day.
Diuretics for edema
Folk diuretic tinctures and decoctions are very effective against edema. They act safely and quite quickly. When used correctly, they help to avoid the loss of electrolytes with minerals, which distinguishes folk remedies from synthetic drugs.
A decoction of the roots of the wild carrot. This plant is considered a universal remedy against swelling, especially when it is not possible to determine the cause of the swelling. In addition to diuretic properties, it has a strengthening effect on the walls of blood vessels.
It is necessary to take 1 tablespoon of the crushed plant and pour boiling water over it (1 glass), after which keep the decoction on steam for at least 30 minutes. Then leave it to infuse (for 20 minutes), and then filter. Boiled water should be added to the finished tincture to bring the volume to 1 full glass. The medicine should be taken 3 times a day in the amount of 2 teaspoons (half an hour before meals).
An infusion of birch leaves with knotweed has effective diuretic properties. It is easy to make - you need 1 teaspoon of the mixture, which you need to pour with water (1 glass), and then boil for 15 minutes. The decoction needs to be infused (about 30 minutes). It should be drunk 2 times a day, in the morning and evening (regardless of meals) in the amount of 0.5 glass.
Burdock is also considered a good diuretic. Its root is needed for the tincture. You need to pour boiling water (0.5 l) over 1 teaspoon of the mixture and leave it to brew overnight. Then this volume should be divided into equal parts and drink the tincture throughout the day.
Good diuretic effects are provided by such products as celery, cucumbers with tomatoes, pears, parsley, watermelon with melon and cranberries. They can be eaten both in pure form and added to various dishes.
Regular green tea also effectively eliminates swelling. It can be brewed together with fennel, which also has diuretic properties.

Folk diuretics for leg swelling
Swelling of the legs can be treated using the folk medicine methods described below.
To make the simplest diuretic, you need to take 0.5 cups of several different juices: lemon, carrot and cucumber - they should be thoroughly mixed. As a result, you will get 1.5 cups of an effective diuretic. You need to dilute the mixture with warm water to get an acceptable taste, and then drink 3 times a day.
There is also a recipe for eliminating swelling from the famous prophetess Vanga - it is quite simple. You need to mix 1 egg yolk with milkweed juice (about 3 g). This mixture should be drunk 3 times a day.
Mint tincture – take mint (30 g) and pour boiling water (1 l) over it. Then let it brew for 1 hour and then cool. To get rid of swelling, drink the tincture in small portions several times a day (3 or more).
Flax tincture. You need 1 tablespoon of plant seeds, pour boiling water (1 l), and then boil for 15 minutes. After that, insist for about 1 hour, and then filter (the latter is not necessary). The tincture should be drunk every 2 hours, 0.5 cups. Swelling begins to subside after 2 weeks of taking the medicine.
Warming compress - for this you need to take 1 part of olive and camphor oils, which need to be thoroughly mixed. The resulting mixture should be applied to the legs - starting from the knees and ending with the toes. After this, the limbs should be wrapped in cloth (cotton is needed, synthetics are prohibited), and a woolen scarf should be thrown on top. This compress should be left on overnight. The procedure is performed every day for 1 month.
There are also several simple recipes for natural baths that effectively relieve swelling and fatigue. These recipes have no contraindications, they are allowed to be used in any conditions, including pregnant women:
- You need to mix birch leaves, mint and chamomile flowers in equal proportions, then take 100 g of this mixture and pour boiling water (1 l) over them. Let the resulting decoction brew for 1 hour, then dilute it using hot water (no more than 38 degrees). It takes about 10 minutes to steam your feet in such a bath;
- Take juniper berries and sea salt (100 g each), as well as dry mustard (1 tablespoon). Add baking soda (2 teaspoons) to this mixture, then pour in water (1 l) and stir. After that, dilute the mixture with hot water and begin the foot steaming procedure. The procedure is excellent for relieving fatigue;
- Sea salt and herbal infusions can also be used separately – for example, for contrast baths. In this case, the feet are alternately dipped in hot and then cold water.
In folk medicine, baths are one of the most effective methods of treating swelling of the lower extremities.
Folk diuretics for hypertension
Traditional diuretic medicines can also eliminate swelling that occurs with hypertension. Among the most popular methods are:
- Take 1 lemon, honey (250 g), vodka (1 glass), and beetroot and cranberry juice (2 glasses each). Mix these ingredients and then drink three times a day on an empty stomach. There is another recipe that does not contain vodka - 0.5 glasses of raw grated beetroot and honey, which must be mixed and drunk three times a day in the amount of 1 tablespoon;
- You need to take chokeberry (0.5 kg) with sugar (300 g) and grind them until a paste is formed. This medicine should be taken twice a day in the amount of 100 g. In addition, there is another method using chokeberry - pour 2 teaspoons of the crushed ingredient with boiling water (1 glass), then strain after half an hour. Drink in the morning and evening in a dosage of 3 tablespoons. Medicinal mixtures should be kept in the refrigerator;
- You should take partitions from walnuts (10 pieces), onions (1 kg), as well as vodka (150 ml) and honey (150 g). Mix the onion juice with the remaining ingredients, then leave to infuse for 10 days. Drink the finished tincture three times a day in a dosage of 1 tablespoon.

Folk diuretics for heart failure
There are several folk diuretic recipes that help in the treatment of heart failure.
You need to take parsley seeds (1 teaspoon), pour water (1 glass) and leave for 8 hours. You need to drink the medicine four times a day, ¼ glass at a time.
Lovage root, infused in alcohol, is also an excellent diuretic. This remedy has an invigorating and tonic effect, and also stimulates the heart. You need to grind 100 g of the plant, and then leave it to infuse in 60-70% alcohol (300 g) for 2 weeks. The tincture should be consumed before meals - in the amount of 1 tablespoon three times a day.
It is necessary to take the herb of orthosiphon (7-9 g), pour boiling water over it (1 glass), and then heat it in a water bath. After that, cool, strain and squeeze out the remaining pulp. The volume of the medicine should be brought to 200 ml, and then drink it 0.5 or a third of a glass (warm) 2-3 times a day.
Use folk diuretics during pregnancy
Folk diuretics are often used during pregnancy to eliminate swelling. This is quite justified, since many medications are contraindicated for pregnant women, while swelling during this period is a common occurrence.
Freshly prepared juices from one component (carrot, pumpkin, viburnum), which can be drunk 0.5 glass 2 times a day.
Birch sap also effectively removes fluid from the body, and in addition, it perfectly relieves thirst. However, it is allowed to drink a maximum of 100 g at a time, twice a day.
You can also drink 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed juice (usually from chokeberry, blackberry or chokeberry) 3 times a day.
Cranberry or lingonberry juices are drunk three times a day. It is not difficult to make such a drink - you need to grind the berries together with sugar, and then add water.
Of the herbal medicinal mixtures, only birch buds or leaves, horsetail, as well as bearberry, lingonberry and orthosiphon leaves are allowed to be used during pregnancy. But they can only be taken after consultation with the attending physician.
It should be remembered that such agents with a diuretic effect as parsley root, juniper or strawberry berries, as well as bearberry are not recommended to be taken during pregnancy, because they provoke uterine contractions.
Contraindications
Among the main contraindications for folk diuretics are kidney pathologies (nephritis or nephrosis), since such decoctions have an irritating effect on the kidneys, as a result of which the inflammatory process in them can intensify.
Some herbs are also contraindicated for use during pregnancy as they may cause miscarriages.
Also, herbal diuretics, which increase the secretory function of the stomach, should not be taken if there is inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as with high levels of stomach acidity.
In addition, the patient should not drink herbs if he has an intolerance to individual components of the herbal mixtures.
In any case, diuretic herbal teas should not be taken without first consulting a doctor.
Side effects folk diuretics
A side effect of taking herbal diuretics is usually an allergic reaction. In addition, individual herbs may have additional side effects.
Long-term use of a collection of lingonberry leaves can lead to chronic hydroquinone poisoning due to the accumulation of this substance.
Long-term use of horsetail herb can cause irritation of the renal parenchyma.
When taking bearberry, reactions such as diarrhea and nausea with vomiting are possible, and in addition, urine may acquire a dark green tint.
Shelf life
Traditional diuretic remedies in dry form are suitable for use for different periods of time - from 3 months to 5 years. At the same time, ready-made herbal tinctures can be stored for no more than 2 days (in the refrigerator).
