The human ear is a rather complex mechanism that, with due care, provides its owner with the necessary perception of sound disturbances. To maintain it in proper condition, regular hygiene of this organ of hearing is necessary. If you neglect this procedure, then the auditory canal can be blocked by a sulfur plug. To get rid of it, and to regain "normal audibility", a doctor - an otolaryngologist appoints drops from the sulfur plug, which will be discussed in this article.
Indications for use of a drop of sulfur plugs
Any produced medicinal product, due to its pharmacodynamics, has its purpose. Indications for the use of drops from the sulfur plug are fairly simple and have a narrow focus in use. The main function of these drugs is to loosen the structure of the substance that blocked the ear canal and cleanse the ear from it. They are used and as preventive measures preventing its formation, especially in people whose body is prone to their increased formation and accumulation.
This is mainly true for such categories of patients:
- Persons who suffer a deterioration in hearing.
- To little children.
- Patients who already have to use hearing aids.
- People of different ages, often using headphones and another earpiece.
- Elderly people who lose their hearing due to their age.
- People who often visit the pool, or in the summer open water.
- It also affects those whose professional activities are related to work in a dusty room.
Form of issue
The form of release of the medicines under consideration is quite similar. The only difference is that, for example, hydrogen peroxide is produced in bottles of glass and in order to carry out the procedure, it is necessary to additionally use a pipette.
In modern same drops from sulfuric cork, a method of using is also considered. For ease of use, usually, the drug is placed in a vial made of polymer materials, which serves both as a repository and as a pipette at the same time.

Pharmacodynamics drop from the sulfur plug
All medicines of this orientation are used in otological practice locally. Pharmacodynamics drops from sulfuric plug largely depends on the properties contained in them, surface - active substances. They create certain conditions for the high efficiency of liquefaction of cumulative sulfur, preventing an increase in its volumes. It is the pharmacodynamics of the active substance that makes it easy to clean the ear canal, and the use of this remedy for preventive purposes makes it possible to keep the auditory passage clean, preventing the accumulation of sulfur formation.
Modern drops from sulfuric cork do not contain highly aggressive and toxic compounds, antibiotics are not introduced into them, which allows them to be taken even to newborn babies and people whose bodies are prone to allergic reactions.
The active substances of solutions for instillation work on exfoliating the keratinized cells of the walls of the ear canal. They narrowly narrow the pores. Some of them still include a certain number of chemical compounds that possess antibacterial properties that suppress the reproduction and further development of pathogenic microorganisms.
In addition to the softening properties, these preparations usually also have moisturizing properties, which makes it easier to remove the sulfur plug from the canal.
Modern drugs used to clean the ear canal from sulfur are not addictive.
Pharmacokinetics by drops from sulfuric cork
To date, the pharmacokinetics of drops from the sulfur plug, has not been thoroughly studied. Doctors only note that the introduction of these drugs drip into the ear canal does not show a systemic absorption of the active substances of the drug used.
Names of drops for removing sulfur plugs
Attention! It should immediately be noted that spontaneous prescription of drugs based on this article should not be. It is purely informative. Any pharmacological agent should be prescribed only by a qualified specialist, otherwise, instead of the expected relief, you can get unpleasant and sometimes dangerous complications.
The formation of sulfur in the ear canals of the human ear is a normal physiological process that was prescribed by nature to protect this organ from external disturbances and effects. There is another function of this substance - it is the moistening of the tissues of the passage. But if the process of its formation is too active, a person gradually develops a problem: he begins to hear worse at first a quiet speech, and then higher sounds.
To solve the problem, the necessary medical procedures are prescribed by the otolaryngologist. Below are the names of the droplets to remove the sulfur plug, which are most often used to eliminate the resulting pathology. After all, the accumulating substance not only weakens the sound perception, but also begins to exert pressure on the tympanic membrane, thus causing discomfort, the appearance of pain symptoms, and also provokes an effect on the nerve endings, which are combined in one ligament with the nerve receptors of the nasopharynx. This pressure leads to the fact that a person begins to feel a sensation in the pharynx, which causes coughing attacks.
Therefore, if the cork is formed, it must be removed. Preparations for its removal in modern medicine are used several, in this article we will consider only some. Physicians refer to them as cerumenolithic agents.
One of the most commonly used medicines is Remo-Vax, a specialized liquid produced by the Finnish company Orion PHARMA. The basis of the drug is the chemical allantoin compound, which shows high efficiency in the process of liquefaction and washing out of sulfuric substance. If used for preventive purposes, it works qualitatively to maintain the purity of the auditory canal.
The composition of this drug does not include substances dangerous to human health, there are no antibiotics in it. Therefore, such a composition can be applied without fear when the patient's body is prone to allergic reactions and having problems with the dermatological skin.
It is enough to apply Remo-Vax several times during the month to prevent accumulation of the substance in the ear canal, keeping the passage "clean".
The medicinal preparation A-Cerumene (A-cerumen), granted to the pharmacological market by the French company "Laboratories Gilbert", is appreciated by specialists specializing in the treatment of ENT diseases. The second name of this drug is nycomed. These drops effectively remove the accumulation of earwax. The mechanism of action of this drug is somewhat different from the "work" of the previous drug. Getting on a sulfur plug, A-Cerumen dissolves sulfur accumulations, preventing them from swelling, increasing their volumes. This is possible due to the surface-active compounds that make up the preparation. They effectively prevent the increase in surface tension, which allows you to keep the volume of sulfur plug, and also helps with more ease to remove it from the ear canal.
Application of A-Cerumene - this alternative to mechanical removal of the substance has real advantages over the old proven way of getting rid of sulfuric cork with the help of earwax. And these advantages consist in the fact that with mechanical removal you can not vouch for the complete cleansing of the ear canal, as well as if the mechanical method of cleaning is used incorrectly, it is possible to cause trauma to the tissues of the ear canal and the tympanic membrane.
At times, hydrogen peroxide and alcohol are used as washing agents, much less often drugs that belong to the group of antibiotics, but, often, their reception aggravates the situation with pain symptoms, irritation of the ear walls occurs, and a high concentration of alcohol can lead to burns of the skin channel.
Three percent hydrogen peroxide is effectively used only for insignificant amounts of sulfur formation. This drug can be used only if the patient does not have skin diseases, especially when they damage the parotid surface.
Another innovative drug developed by Israeli scientists and physicians is Clean Ears. This unique medicine is made on the basis of an olive oil derivative with the content of active chemical compounds. The process of dissolving and removing sulfur takes place due to the purifying mechanism of a natural nature, and the method of instillation allows maintaining a uniformly-permissible pressure of the jet, which prevents the perforation of the drum membrane.
Dosing and Administration
All medicines of this orientation are intended for instillation into the external auditory meatus. Cerculenolitic agents are forbidden to be used orally and in another way. The method of application and dose are sufficiently clearly explained in the instructions, which are obligatory attached to the produced pharmacological agents.
But the method of their reception is quite similar.
- Before using drops from the sulfur plug, they are first heated to the temperature of the human body (hold it for a little, five minutes, in the palms of your hands) or in any other way bring to a temperature of 37 ° C (for example, in a water bath).
- After this, the patient is placed so that the processed ear is parallel to the floor, the conch of the ear is up.
- Heated medicinal solution is injected into the external ear with drops. The drug flows down the walls. It is necessary to try to drip not in the middle, but with the edge, in order to avoid the formation of a cork from the air.
- The tip should not be injected very deeply.
- Some time a person must lie down for at least one minute.
- Turn over on the other side, tilt your head and put a napkin to let the liquid come back.
- It is necessary to gently rinse with warm water (0.9% solution of sodium chloride or physiological solution of the same concentration) the outer region of the auricle.
- In a similar way, the second ear is treated.
Care must be taken to ensure that drops from the sulfur plug do not reach the mucosa or eyes. The schedule of procedures is determined by the attending physician - the otolaryngologist.
If the ear plug is sufficiently dense and bulky, then, for example, A-Cerumene, it is necessary to administer 1 ml (half a vial) into one ear canal. The procedure is carried out twice a month. The duration of the drug is not limited to certain dates. Such medicines can, as toothpaste, be enjoyed throughout life.
One bottle of a modern remedy is usually designed for one reception, divided into two ear canals. For example, a 3% hydrogen peroxide is digested in the ear with a pipette.
- For 15 minutes it is necessary to lie on the side, opposite to the one on which the processed ear is located.
- This process is accompanied by foaming and hissing. When foaming, parts of sulfur also come out partially.
- Remove the remains of the stopper with the ear stick.
- The ear cone is gently wiped.
- This procedure is carried out twice during the day, three to five days in a row. The duration of the course depends on the level of "clogging" the ear and to the full restoration of the sound perception.
- It is advisable to keep dry heat before going to sleep for 15 minutes on the ear. This nuance will improve the effectiveness of the procedure and dry the ear canal itself.
If the patient does not observe a therapeutic result after five days, consult a doctor.
Doctors - otolaryngologists do not recommend using earbands for cleaning the auricles. In the procedure of mechanical cleaning of the ear, the cotton swab can further further move the sulfur plug into the interior, bringing it closer to the drum membrane. This, on the contrary, only provokes the formation of a cork in the ear. In this situation, it will be more appropriate to simply wind a little cotton wool on the indexing phalanx of the hand and moisten it in warm water. Such a swab needs to gently wipe the outer area of the ear, removing the secreted sulfur. This will be enough to maintain relative purity, but it removes the risk of creating a sulfur plug and does not damage the tissues that form the ear canal.
Use of drops from sulfuric cork during pregnancy
If we consider the influence of active ingredients, the drugs used, on the development and formation of the fetus when applied by a woman "in position", then the doctors and pharmacists are unanimous here - the use of drops from sulfur plug during pregnancy is allowed. They do not harm a newborn baby who is breastfeeding, if during the feeding the young mother uses these medicines.
It is allowed to use innovative drugs of this orientation and small patients. They are effective both for removing sulfur plugs and for preventing its formation.
Contraindications to the use of drops from the sulfur plug
But still the drug is a medicinal product and its use has its limitations. Contraindications to the use of drops from sulfuric cork are:
- Inflammatory process, taking place in the area of the auricle.
- Pain symptomatology localized in the area.
- Any discharge that is observed from the ear.
- The propensity of the patient's body to allergic reactions. In this case, you need to be very careful about the appointment of a particular drug.
- Perforation of the drum membrane obtained by mechanical, infectious or any other means.
- If a person has undergone a bypass of the tympanic membrane, as well as in the period of one year after its removal.
- In case of individual intolerance of the components of the agent used.
- When a patient has an anamnesis, an infectious-inflammatory disease of the ear, which is in the acute phase of manifestation or has a chronic status.
Side effects of drops from the sulfur plug
Monitoring of the intake of the medicines in question did not reveal any side effects of the drops from the sulfur plug. It is quite rare cases, for example, as individual characteristics of the human body, when there was a development of undesirable symptoms in the form of hypersensitivity to the component composition of the solution. The patient may have reddening of the skin, located next to the auricle. There may be itching, burning sensation and skin rashes. The patient can complain about a constant noise veil in the ears.
When using drops from a sulfur plug, a person may have a feeling that a liquid is poured in the ear, this effect can result from the water-retaining components that make up the medicine.
If such a symptomatology appears, you must immediately inform your doctor about it.
Overdose
Due to the fact that all drugs work as external drugs, their overdose is impossible.
Interactions of drops from sulfur plugs with other drugs
Before appointing to a joint reception several drugs at the same time, it is necessary to know well their mutual influence on each other and their joint effect on the patient's body. Interactions of drops from sulfur plugs with other drugs belonging to the group of otological means may be weakly antagonistic. Therefore, the introduction of such drugs is desirable to spread over time.
With preparations of other pharmacological groups, medicinal products related to cerumenolytical medicines have not been found to be of mutual influence, and, consequently, there are no contraindications to their parallel reception.
Conditions for storing drops from the sulfur plug
In any instruction attached to the drug, recommendations are provided that specify the storage conditions for drops from the sulfur plug. If a person has thoroughly studied the instruction and adheres to it, then the degree of effectiveness of the drug will be at a high level, throughout the validity period indicated on the package.
These recommendations include:
- Storage of medicinal product in a cool place, where the room temperature does not exceed + 30 ° С.
- After opening the vial, the drug is usable for the next 24 hours.
- Keep the medicine in a place inaccessible to direct sunlight.
- It should not be accessible to small children.
Shelf life
Any medicine is produced by the manufacturer with his time period of effective work. This expiration date, both the production date and the recommended end-of-reception time, should be reflected on the packaging material of the medicinal product. For the preparations of the cerumenolithic group, this period usually ranges from two to four years. If the end date on the package has passed, then such a drug should not be used more as in the treatment process, or as a means for preventive measures.
Sulfur secretions in the auricle are created by nature as a natural barrier that protects a person's ear from infectious-bacterial or fungal damage to the hearing organ, and it also protects against small flying insects. But if for any reason the amount of produced sulfur increases, or it is poorly excreted, accumulating, then the ear canal is blocked by a stopper, which must be removed. In this case, drops from the sulfur plug will help. It should only be remembered that any pharmacological agent should be prescribed only by a specialist. Self-medication can be fraught with serious complications. If you constantly feel a noise in your ears or understand that you are losing your hearing, then do not despair. You just need to seek advice from the otolaryngologist. He will conduct an inspection. Maybe you have a sulfur plug, which is easy to get rid of, without causing your body any harm.
