Dexapos eye drops are a drug based on the corticosteroid hormone dexamethasone. The drops effectively stop the inflammatory process and also help with severe allergic eye lesions.

Indications Dexapos

Dexapos is successfully used in ophthalmological practice for the treatment of complex inflammatory, allergic and non-infectious eye pathologies with damage to the conjunctiva, cornea, etc.

The appointment of Dexapos is appropriate:

  • for conjunctivitis of infectious and allergic origin;
  • for scleritis;
  • in deep keratitis without damage to epithelial tissue;
  • for iritis and iridocyclitis;
  • with choroiditis, retinitis;
  • for ophthalmia;
  • in allergic processes;
  • for hay fever;
  • for the prevention and treatment of inflammation after surgery or injury.

Release form

Dexapos is an eye drop. The solution has no specific color, it is transparent. The active component is dexamethasone, a glucocorticosteroid hormone.

Dexapos is available in plastic dropper bottles of 5 ml. Each bottle has its own cardboard packaging with instructions for use included.

Pharmacodynamics

The active ingredient dexamethasone, which is part of the Dexapos drops, provides a strong anti-inflammatory effect. The effect of the drug when applied locally was proven after successful treatment of inflammatory and allergic processes in the anterior eye segment. In the postoperative period, Dexapos is used as a preventive and medicinal product for possible eye inflammations.

The specifics of the therapeutic effect of the corticosteroid substance have not yet been fully determined. Binding to protein intracellular receptors affects metabolic processes at the gene level. In addition, protein structures necessary for chemotaxis and immune reactions are inhibited.

Also, corticosteroid hormonal substances affect the state of humoral and cellular immunity, provoking the appearance of monocytopenia and lymphocytopenia.

Pharmacokinetics

The few studies that have been done indicate that when drops such as Dexapos are applied topically, therapeutic concentrations of the active ingredient dexamethasone can be detected in tissue. When a small amount of the active ingredient is in the intact epithelial layer of the cornea, the penetration rate increases in the presence of inflammation or corneal damage.

Dosing and administration

Dexapos drops are used in ophthalmology, dripping 1 drop of the drug into the conjunctival sac of the diseased eye organ up to 5 times a day. In complicated and severe pathological situations, the doctor may prescribe a different dosage and frequency of use of Dexapos.

In standard situations, the duration of treatment with drops is 14 days. However, if the effect of treatment is not detected within the first 48 hours from the first use of the medication, the doctor may cancel Dexapos, replacing it with another drug.

When using eye drops, it is necessary to observe hygiene rules and avoid contact of the drop part of the bottle with the skin and mucous membranes.

Children's dosages for the drug Dexapos are not provided, since there are no reliable studies on the use of these eye drops in pediatric practice.

Overdose

There have been no reports of signs of intoxication occurring when using high doses of Dexapos.

However, in case of possible overdose, eyes should be rinsed with warm running water.

If an overdose of Dexapos could be caused by long-term use of drops, then severe side effects may occur - for example, the development of Itsenko-Cushing syndrome is possible. Symptoms of acute poisoning with Dexapos were not noted in any of the cases.

Interactions with other drugs

Specific studies on drug interactions between Dexapos and other medications have not been conducted.

However, the combination of Dexapos with atropine, mydriatics and anticholinergic drugs should be avoided - this combination can lead to an increase in intraocular pressure.

If the patient is prescribed other eye medications, then an interval of about 15 minutes should be maintained between their application. In this case, the eye ointment should be applied last.
