Indications Cefodoxa
It is used for the treatment of infectious pathologies that develop due to the activity of microbes that are hypersensitive to the drug:
- sinusitis with laryngitis and tonsillitis, as well as pharyngitis and otitis;
- lung inflammation or bronchitis;
- pyelonephritis or cystitis (moderate or mild);
- infections affecting the epidermis, bone and soft tissues, as well as joints;
- urethritis with proctitis, and in addition, cervicitis of gonococcal etiology.
Pharmacodynamics
The bactericidal effect exerted by the drug on the body develops due to the ability to acetylate transpeptidase inside the membranes of bacterial cells. As a result, the processes of formation of microbial cell walls are disrupted.
Many gram-negative bacteria (such as Klebsiella, Providencia, Escherichia coli, as well as Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas, Serratia, Haemophilus influenzae and Citrobacter) and some gram-positive microbes are highly sensitive to Cefodox.
Low sensitivity is demonstrated by low-sensitivity anaerobes.
Many strains of enterococci with clostridia, mycoplasmas with legionella and chlamydia, as well as methicillin-resistant staphylococcal strains remain resistant to the drug.
Pharmacokinetics
The medication is actively absorbed within the digestive system.
The bioavailability index of the substance is about 52%. The medicinal component penetrates into most tissues with secretions, cumulating inside them. Cefpodoxime cumulation is observed inside the lungs with the liver, muscles, bone tissues and kidneys. In addition, it passes through the capsules of abscesses into the cerebrospinal fluid. The substance is not subject to metabolism.
The excretion of the drug is carried out by the kidneys.
Dosing and administration
Scheme of use of tablets.
The antibiotic in tablets can be prescribed to adolescents over 12 years old, as well as adults. The dosage sizes are 0.2-0.4 g.
For the treatment of diseases affecting the urogenital tract or upper respiratory system and having an infectious origin, 0.2 g of the drug is prescribed per day. For the treatment of pulmonary pneumonia or bronchitis, 0.4 g of the substance is taken. Taking into account the portion size, the medicine should be taken 1-2 times per day.
The duration of the treatment cycle is determined by the nature of the course of the pathology and is selected by the doctor.
Mode of application of suspension.
To prepare the suspension, perform the following manipulations: first, shake the bottle with the powder, and then pour boiled cold water into it - up to a special mark on the wall of the bottle. Water should be added in 2 steps; at the same time, shake the bottle from time to time so that the mixture becomes homogeneous. The finished suspension can be used 5 minutes after preparation. Before each dose of the medicine, shake the container with the mixture.
The medicinal suspension must be taken with food. The interval between doses is 12 hours.
The daily dose of the medicine is 10 mg/kg. The maximum daily dose allowed is 0.4 g. It should be taken in 2 doses, because the maximum single dose allowed is 0.2 g.
Use Cefodoxa during pregnancy
Due to the fact that no relevant tests have been conducted regarding the effects of the drug on pregnant women, it is only permitted to be prescribed to women during this period if there are strict indications.
Because the active element of the drug accumulates in breast milk, breastfeeding must be discontinued during therapy.
Contraindications
Contraindicated for use in individuals with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
The suspension should not be taken by people with galactosemia, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or hypolactasia.
Side effects Cefodoxa
The use of the medication may provoke the appearance of the following side effects:
- the appearance of nausea, diarrhea or vomiting;
- development of headaches;
- development of rashes or itchy skin;
- increased plasma creatinine and urea levels;
- increased liver transaminase levels;
- disorder of leukopoiesis or thrombocytopoiesis processes;
- development of eosinophilia.
Overdose
The following symptoms may develop due to intoxication: diarrhea with nausea or vomiting. In people with renal insufficiency, encephalopathy may occur, which disappears after the plasma levels of the drug decrease.
To eliminate an overdose, gastric lavage, hemodialysis and symptomatic measures are required.
Interactions with other drugs
The use of antacids, as well as agents that block the activity of H2-endings, together with Cefodox leads to a weakening of the absorption of the latter.
When combining the drug with nephrotoxic agents, renal function should be constantly monitored.
The combination of the drug with probenecid leads to an increase in the values of cefpodoxime in the blood plasma.
Application for children
Cefodox tablets are allowed to be taken only after reaching the age of 12. Infants from 5 months are allowed to prescribe the therapeutic drug in the form of a suspension.
Analogues
Analogues of the drug are Aksef with Doccef, as well as Zinacef, Cefpotec and Zocef.
Reviews
Cefodox receives mostly positive reviews from adults and parents who gave the medicine to their children. For example, it acts quickly against infections that affect the upper respiratory tract - bronchitis and other infectious lesions. Patients note that the signs of the disease quickly pass - pain, fever, etc. Another advantage is that negative reactions to the drug develop only occasionally.
The only disadvantage is the inconvenient form of suspension release.
