"Mirror Brush", or ulnar dimelia is a rare congenital anomaly that is characterized by a doubling of the ulna, lack of a radius and the first finger of the hand, an excessive number of fingers, usually symmetrically located relative to the midline. Usually visualize the restriction of movements in the elbow joint, rotational movements of the brush, as in these patients instead of the head of the radius in the elbow joint proximal part of the second ulnar bone participates. In addition to the classical form of the "mirror brush", intermediate variants of this anomaly are possible: radial polydactyly (doubling of the 1st finger and its three-phalanxism) is combined with a normally developed forearm, with three forearm bones, and the syndactyly fingers of the hand.

What do need to examine?

Diagnosis and treatment of "mirror brush", or ulnar dimely

Diagnosis is not difficult. Characteristic of a large number of fingers (usually 7 or 8), as well as an enlarged brush.

Treatment is only prompt. The optimal age for treatment is over 1 year. The operations are complex, they must be performed only in specialized centers of hand surgery. Surgical interventions are aimed at eliminating deformations of the wrist, wrist and elbow joint. On the brush, a pollicization operation is carried out (reconstruction of the first finger from one three-phalanx finger) with simultaneous removal of additional rays, which allows to restore a five-finger brush with a good two-sided grasping function, and also to improve its cosmetic appearance.
