Plaque on the tonsils is a common occurrence among both children and adults. Plaque is usually not a disease, but only a symptom.

The tonsils are a paired organ located between the pharynx and the oral cavity. We can see 2 tonsils by opening our mouths, they are also called glands, the rest are hidden in the nose, under the tongue and deeper in the pharynx, we cannot see them. The tonsils perform a very important function - they hold viruses at the entrance to the body and thus protect it from harmful microorganisms. In addition to the protective function, they participate in the development of immunity, and also perform a hematopoietic function.

The tonsils are an organ related to the body's immune system, they are very sensitive, especially in cold weather. When immunity can decrease, our throat often starts to hurt, and the tonsils become covered with a specific coating. This is how they neutralize microbes that enter the body through the mouth. We can say that this organ is the first shield on the way of viruses into the body. At the same time, to this day, their role for the immune system remains not fully understood.

Causes of plaque on tonsils

Plaque is the reaction of the tonsils to the penetration of microbes, bacteria and viruses into the body. There are different reasons for plaque on the tonsils. It occurs in the recesses called crypts of the tonsils, where food debris and harmful microorganisms accumulate. Under the influence of microflora, they multiply, develop and subsequently decompose there, which leads to suppuration, which in turn envelops the tonsils, creating a film.

If plaque appears on the tonsils, this is the first sign that the body is being attacked by a disease and the person needs to urgently take preventive measures, since the protective function of the tonsils immediately decreases, and they are no longer able to completely protect the body from further penetration of microbes deeper into the bronchi and lungs.

Symptoms of plaque on the tonsils

Plaque on the tonsils is one of the main symptoms of their inflammation. It can have different colors, depending on the stage and specificity of the disease that is progressing: white, gray, yellow, abscesses may appear and all this is accompanied by acute pain in the throat. If you do not pay attention to the film on the tonsils, then soon the disease will spread, and you will get tonsillitis, or diphtheria, inflammation of the nasopharynx and even heart disease, which are treated for a long time and have many negative consequences. Therefore, when the first symptoms of plaque on the tonsils appear, your health worsens, your temperature rises and your throat starts to hurt - go to the doctor immediately! Never self-medicate. At home, you can only ease your suffering by gargling with a saline or alcohol solution, Furacilin.

White coating on tonsils

As already mentioned, the plaque on the tonsils can have different shades, from white to dirty gray, so if it appears, it is better not to try to determine the color yourself, but to contact an otolaryngologist who, based on knowledge and medical practice, will be able to reliably determine the shade of the film. This is very important for accurate diagnosis of the disease, since, for example, white plaque on the tonsils can be a sign of diseases such as tonsillitis, scarlet fever, stomatitis, diphtheria, candidiasis and others. For a more accurate diagnosis, doctors take a smear to determine the nature of the microbes and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Plaques on the tonsils without fever

There are cases when plaque appears on the tonsils, and the body temperature is normal. In this case, you should also consult a doctor, since these may be the first symptoms of the disease.

For example, after a burn or injury to the throat, a film may appear on the tonsils; it has a different specificity, unlike bacterial ones, and therefore requires a different method of elimination.

Fungal plaque on the tonsils is often not accompanied by fever; it usually looks like cottage cheese and can affect not only the tonsils, but also the tissues of the oropharynx.

Angina usually occurs with a high temperature and fever, but at the very initial stage a film may appear and only after some time the fever may rise. There is also the so-called " syphilitic angina ", in which the tonsil hardens and erosions form on it. But this disease also occurs without an increase in body temperature.

Sometimes the film can be confused with “purulent plugs” in the lacunae, but they are generally not accompanied by an increase in temperature.

With stomatitis, a white coating appears, a sore throat, but there is no fever.

Purulent plaque on the tonsils

This is popularly called "purulent tonsillitis". This is often acute tonsillitis, neglected at an early stage, when pus has already formed from a simple film. It is accompanied by high temperature, very poor health of a person, general weakness, headache, lack of appetite.

Purulent tonsillitis takes a long time to treat and is very difficult. It can become chronic, and with the slightest cold a person will suffer from purulent plaque on the tonsils, so treatment and prevention must be approached with all seriousness, so as not to allow the disease to recur under any circumstances.

Gray coating on tonsils

Dirty-gray, grayish, gray plaque on the tonsils are signs of diphtheria. There is a rod-shaped microbe that can enter the body through the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, eyes, genitals, and if a person has a predisposition, cause diphtheria. When the diphtheria bacillus enters the body through the mouth, its pathogen causes inflammation in the pharynx and the formation of a film on the tonsils.

There are several forms of diphtheria of the pharynx and, accordingly, several different types of films. In the localized form of diphtheria, the plaque on the tonsils is almost invisible, rather it looks like a film with a pearly grayish shine. When a person is sick with toxic diphtheria, the film is represented by dirty gray crusts on the tonsils and is very painful. In the widespread form of diphtheria, it can have a color ranging from light gray to dark, and is localized not only on the tonsils, but also extends beyond them.

Yellow coating on tonsils

It can be a sign of the same diseases as white plaque, but in all people its occurrence is associated with different factors and the color is individual. Although in some cases yellow plaque is the first stage of the formation of pus on the tonsils, which can transform into painful abscesses.

Most often, a yellow film is a sign of angina (tonsillitis), especially if accompanied by difficulty breathing, fever, cough, sore throat. It is treated with antibiotics. Folk remedies and various rinses can only alleviate the symptoms, but only an antibiotic can save a person from a disease caused by a bacterial pathogen.

Fungal plaque on the tonsils

To determine the nature of the origin of the film, doctors perform a microbiological analysis of a smear from the surface of the tonsils and the back of the throat. Very often, both children and adults encounter such a type of film as fungal. It is caused by a candidal fungus that enters the body through the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, eyes, etc.

Fungal plaque on the tonsils is usually called candidiasis or fungal tonsillitis. Its difference is that the fungus is not treated with antibiotics, here antifungal drugs and general strengthening vitamins are needed. In the case when it is not possible to cope with the fungus with medication, surgical removal of the palatine tonsils is prescribed.

Fibrinous plaque after tonsillectomy

When it is impossible to cope with some types of angina or candidiasis with medications, tonsillectomy is prescribed. Like any surgical operation, this one has complications. In this case, pharyngeal bleeding may occur. It is very dangerous and mainly occurs when the patient does not follow postoperative recommendations. Bleeding can begin both on the first day after tonsillectomy and a day later. After the operation, an open wound forms at the site of the tonsils, after some time it is tightened with a fibrinous film, which serves as a hemostatic barrier. 5-6 days after surgery, the fibrinous plaque on the tonsils disappears on its own.

Curdy coating on tonsils

If the film on the tonsils has a dense curd consistency, then most likely it is caused by a fungus. This could be candidiasis of the tonsils, pharyngomycosis, mycosis of the pharynx, etc.

The fungus affects the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, a white or grayish cheesy coating appears, which is easily removed from the tonsils, but soon appears again, all this is accompanied by an unpleasant odor from the mouth, since the film is a product of the vital activity and decomposition of microorganisms. A person can simultaneously suffer from several types of fungi, so it is imperative to consult a doctor if a cheesy coating appears on the tonsils, for diagnosis and selection of treatment, because antifungal drugs have different specifics and purposes, and what can destroy one type of fungus will not always help to cope with another.

Plaque on the tonsils of a child

Children suffer from sore throats, fungal diseases of the throat and oral cavity more often than adults, because their immunity is weaker, their tonsils are not able to cope with all the infections that lie in wait in kindergarten, school or on the street, especially when they are transmitted by airborne droplets.

Children's tonsils immediately react with a plaque to diseases. You can't dawdle with babies and you need to see a doctor right away to prevent the disease from becoming chronic. The doctor will do all the necessary tests and prescribe medications that are suitable for the child. For prevention, children need to support and strengthen their immune system.

Who to contact?

Diagnosis of plaque on the tonsils

The diagnosis is quite simple - at the first signs of pain, open your mouth, take a mirror and look - they are visible to the naked eye. But in order to determine the nature of the film, the type of microbes or fungus, you need to go to a clinic to a specialist who will take a smear of the film from the tonsils and mucous membrane of the pharynx and conduct tests. And comparing them with other symptoms: fever, sore throat, color of the film, its consistency, the presence of abscesses on the tonsils, he will diagnose the disease. Then it will be possible to choose the right treatment.

Treatment of plaque on the tonsils

As soon as the first symptoms of the virus appear - weakness, fever, sore throat, plaque on the tonsils, you need to take antiviral drugs, for example, "Amizon". In order to soothe a sore throat, you need to gargle it. A solution of water, salt and iodine (a spoonful of salt and 3 drops of iodine per glass of warm, warm, not hot water) is suitable for gargling, as well as a soda solution (a teaspoon of soda per glass of water). They will slightly alleviate the symptoms. You need to gargle often. For stomatitis, you can buy a special remedy "Stomatidin" in the pharmacy, it helps a lot with inflamed tonsils. You can also take lozenges with an analgesic effect for a sore throat - "Faringosept", "Decatilen" and others. But, of course, treatment should be carried out under the supervision of a doctor so as not to aggravate the situation.

How to remove plaque from tonsils?

There are various methods of treating tonsillitis and removing plaque. The most popular, accessible and simple is, of course, gargling. You can gargle with a soda solution, furicillin solution, tinctures of medicinal herbs (chamomile, sage, calendula - they are brewed in equal proportions), water in which beets were boiled. Lemon will also help remove plaque from the tonsils, its juice cleanses the tonsils and relieves pain; you can also chew small pieces of garlic.

Treatment of plaque on tonsils with folk methods

A throat disease such as angina is manifested by high temperature, sore throat, redness and swelling of the tonsils, and the appearance of a white film on them. Angina is dangerous not only as a disease, but also for its consequences - rheumatism, nephritis, and others. If a white coating appears on the tonsils, it is better to seek medical help without delay.

But you can start treatment at home so as not to miss the moment.

You can carry out treatment using the following folk methods:

  1. During the day, you should frequently gargle. To do this, make the following solution - ½ teaspoon of regular soda per 1 tbsp. of warm water; you can use furacilin in the form of a solution, or dissolve one tablet in a glass of warm, boiled water.
  2. If you are not allergic to honey, you can periodically put a teaspoon of honey on your tongue, do not swallow it right away, but gradually, as it melts. This procedure can be done even every hour. Honey has antibacterial properties.
  3. Garlic is a good helper. When you chew garlic, juice is released, which helps destroy bacteria.

  6. Beetroot can help cure a sore throat and remove the film from the tonsils. Beetroot should be washed well and boiled. Use the water in which the beetroot was boiled. Gargle with this water twice a day.

Traditional methods of treatment are suitable for both adults and children who know how to gargle. Following these recommendations will help you cope with the disease faster.

To prevent the occurrence of this pathology, it is recommended to take vitamins, strengthen the immune system and not to neglect the onset of colds. The prognosis for diseases associated with the pharynx, throat and tonsils is usually good, thanks to antibiotics and other drugs, sore throats and other diseases are perfectly treatable, the main danger is only that the disease does not become chronic. Then you will have to be treated regularly. Plaque on the tonsils is the first and important alarm bell that cannot be ignored, so as not to face a serious and severe disease in the future.
