The health of a woman's genitals depends on many factors and directly affects her reproductive function. Pain in the cervix is a strong signal that it is time to go to a gynecologist for an examination. It can occur suddenly, in fits and starts, or it can only appear during critical days or sexual intercourse - all these manifestations require detailed study, correct diagnosis and, if necessary, immediate treatment.
Why does pain in the cervix occur?
Most often, the cause of pain in the cervix is so-called erosions. They can occur under various circumstances. The most common diseases that are accompanied by pain in the cervix:
- A thinning of the mucous membrane of the cervix, which is medically known as erythroplakia. This diagnosis can be made by finding a bright red spot on the cervix. Although research in this area continues, the exact causes of this condition have not yet been determined.
- Ectropion. This complex term denotes eversion of the cervical canal mucosa. Such damage most often occurs as a result of abortions or diagnostic curettage, which led to traumatic dilation of the cervix. There are also frequent cases when the diagnosis of ectropion appears as a result of complicated natural childbirth.
- Leukoplakia is the name of the process as a result of which keratinized areas similar to normal skin appear on the epithelium of the cervix. Often, this disease develops as a result of past infections or injuries. In addition, decreased immunity and hormonal imbalance can also contribute to its development. Unfortunately, there are no special manifestations of this pathology (not even always a woman feels pain in the cervix), which is why its diagnosis, in many cases, is carried out when leukoplakia becomes malignant. Before prescribing treatment for this disease, the gynecologist should take a biopsy from the affected area of the mucous membrane of the cervix.
- Cervical erosion (true) is damage to the flat multilayered epithelium in the vaginal area of the cervix. This refers to a wound or scratch that occurred 2-3 days to 1-2 weeks ago. If there is no inflammatory process in the vagina, such a diagnosis goes away on its own through natural healing of the mucous membrane. But if there are foci of inflammation in the vagina, then they will constantly prevent healing. In this case, the gynecologist will prescribe anti-inflammatory therapy.
- Pseudo-erosion, or as it is commonly called in the medical community, ectopia of the cervix can be congenital. It manifests itself when, for various reasons (for example, early sexual intercourse), a border of the junction of epithelia is formed on the vaginal area of the cervix in girls over 18 years old. The pathology lies in the fact that the cylindrical epithelium, which should be in the cervical canal, is located outside it. Pseudo-erosion can also be acquired as a result of past infections (especially STIs) or with an irregular menstrual cycle caused by hormonal imbalance. There are no special complaints from girls suffering from ectopia of the cervix. However, in some cases they may be bothered by pain in the cervix, bloody discharge after intercourse, specific discharge (the so-called leucorrhoea).
Who to contact?
To the gynecologist – with a smile!
In order to avoid negative consequences, diseases that provoke pain in the cervix and the occurrence of various complications, it is necessary for every woman and young girl after the beginning of sexual activity to make it a rule to visit the gynecologist twice a year. In this case, if this rule is ironclad, a visit to the doctor will not cause unpleasant emotions. By protecting your female health, you prolong your youth, activity and life in general.
