Eyes are the organ of vision, on the condition of which our perception of the environment depends entirely. They are exposed to aggressive external factors: wind, sun, high and low temperatures, light and darkness. In order for the eyes to perform their functions, tears are produced, which are protection from various irritants. This continuous process is assigned to the lacrimal glands. After synthesis, the tear gets on the cornea of the eye and through the lacrimal canals ends up in a special sac, from where it comes out. But with normal functioning of the process, excessive lacrimation does not occur. Eyes are watering - it means that there is a failure in this system.
Epidemiology
Statistics show that about 300,000 people worldwide suffer from eye pathologies. Most people are susceptible to these problems in countries with low living standards. Over the past 20 years, the number of people suffering from eye diseases as a result of infections has decreased. Among newborns, 5% of infants suffer from obstruction of the lacrimal canal.
Causes tearfulness
Lacrimal fluid cleanses and protects the cornea of the eye, nourishes the eye, improves the sharpness of vision, forming a water lens, disinfects with the help of the bactericidal substance lysozyme. Why do we suddenly feel uncomfortable and our eyes start to water? There are several reasons for this phenomenon. Lacrimation can be caused by conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, vascular diseases of the eyes, the ingress of a foreign body, allergies, infectious viral diseases, liver and gallbladder pathologies, old age, when the tone of the muscles of the eyelids and lacrimal sac weakens, eye injuries.
Risk factors
Risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of such a phenomenon include:
- lack of B vitamins and calcium;
- prolonged wearing of lenses, violation of the rules of their use;
- use of low-quality cosmetics;
- excessive dryness of air;
- cold frosty weather;
- temperature difference;
- bright sunlight;
- overwork and chronic fatigue.

Symptoms tearfulness
The daily dose of tear production is 1 ml, its increase to 10 ml is considered abnormal. In fact, no one measures the volume of tear fluid, no one thinks about it at all until discomfort in everyday life occurs, associated with unpleasant symptoms. The first signs are redness of the eyes, uncontrolled lacrimation, photophobia, sometimes stinging. Do not confuse with crying as a result of stress, in this case the role of tears has a positive aspect, because it protects them thanks to psychotropic substances contained in the liquid.
My eyes water outside in cool weather
If your eyes are watering outside in cool weather or in the cold, there is no reason to worry. This is a natural protective reaction of the body to an external irritant, tears moisturize the cornea of the eyes, preventing it from being damaged. Another reason may be an allergy to cold, called cold conjunctivitis. Its essence is that under the influence of low temperature, histamine is released - a biologically active substance that causes vasodilation, redness of the eyelids, their swelling, and sometimes asthma attacks and urticaria on the body - all the attributes of an allergic reaction. Women are more susceptible to this reaction than men.
My eye hurts and waters
If your eye hurts and waters, it may have been injured. The damage may be microscopic and unnoticed by a person. It is provoked by a small speck of dirt or any chemical substance, say, hairspray, perfume spray, or surface cleaner. In this case, you should immediately rinse your eyes with water or cooled tea. Overstrain of the eye muscles as a result of prolonged work in front of a computer, reading in poor lighting, or watching TV for many hours often leads to the eye becoming red and watery. This is a signal that you need to change your approach to your pastime. It happens that in a room with a working air conditioner, the air is very dry and this circumstance also causes a symptom when the eyes water a lot.
Eyes itch and water
An allergic reaction causes the eyes to itch and water. If the irritant is known, then you just need to avoid it, otherwise, you need to see an allergist. When an infection gets into the eye, they become inflamed. It all usually starts with one eye, it waters and fester, especially after a night's sleep, then the other one gets infected. Often, infection occurs due to poor personal hygiene, women using mascara that has expired.

Runny nose and watery eyes
We have all noticed that when a runny nose appears, the eyes begin to water. This is associated with sinusitis - inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, during which the nasal septum swells and closes the passage to them. The discharge of fluid is difficult, it accumulates, presses on the eye sockets and forehead, and, finding no other way out, is released through the lacrimal canal. Another reason for this combination of symptoms is allergic or seasonal rhinitis, during which the nose also tickles, it is stuffy and the eyes water.
My eyes are constantly watering
There are cases when the eyes are constantly watering. This happens especially often in elderly people. This is explained by the fact that the periorbital muscles weaken, they are not able to hold the lacrimal canal and sac clamped. If this symptom is not associated with age-related changes, then it is necessary to undergo an examination by a dentist, ENT specialist and gastroenterologist. Infections of the nasopharynx, caries, diseases of the digestive system, liver, gallbladder can lead to such an unpleasant, discomforting phenomenon.
The eye is swollen and watery
There may be several explanations for this. Swelling detected in the morning after sleep sometimes indicates kidney or heart disease. This may be especially true for people who abuse alcohol, spicy, fatty and oversalted food. Another reason is an insect bite, which releases toxic substances when stinging. An allergic reaction caused by dust, citrus fruits, honey, pollen and other allergens during the flowering season of various plants is possible. The eye may swell and water as a result of even a small bruise when soft tissue is damaged. Infection is also possible, since conjunctivitis is characterized by similar symptoms. In any case, you should consult a doctor and not aggravate your condition by self-medication.
Temperature and watery eyes
People begin to feel problems with lacrimation to the full extent when they get sick with ARVI or flu. Flu manifests itself especially sharply and aggressively: tickling in the nose, a sharp rise in temperature, sneezing begins and eyes water. Eyes water with a cold or infection due to the fact that the nasopharynx is involved in the inflammatory process, the nasal septum swells, the passage to the nasal sinuses is closed, and tear fluid finds one outlet - into the lacrimal canals. At the same time, the nose is stuffy, there is a cough, a headache and eyes water all the time, because the accumulating fluid presses on the eyeballs, sometimes even purulent discharge from the eyes appears. These symptoms end with the passage of the acute phase of the underlying disease.
My eyes are watery and stinging
It happens, especially often in women who use decorative cosmetics, that their eyes water and sting. The reason for this is the use of low-quality or expired mascara. Often, young girls living with friends in a dorm use each other's cosmetics or testers in a store, without thinking about the fact that these are purely individual things. As a result, the eyes water from mascara as a result of infection and turn into a problem that requires even more money than buying cosmetics. Eyes can water and sting due to inflammation of the eyelids - blepharitis or barley - inflammation of the eyelash follicle.
My eyes are watery in the morning
Tearing of the eyes does not always indicate a pathology, such a phenomenon can also indicate a normal reaction of the body. When the eyes are watery in the morning, this is just a manifestation of the protective function to moisturize the eyeball after the night, when it dries out, to protect it from damage and infections. During yawning, the muscles squeeze the lacrimal sac and tears are released. After sleep, the eyes are watery, if the air conditioner was on in the bedroom, it dries the mucous membrane, so lacrimation occurs to restore the balance.
My eyes are watering from the wind
Many people have watery eyes from the wind outside and this is normal. The eye is a very sensitive organ, and the wind is a strong irritant. In order to protect itself from an external aggressive factor, more fluid is released to moisturize the eyeball. Older people are more likely to encounter this phenomenon, since their eye vessels are in worse condition, and the muscles that hold the tear duct are weaker. If the tearing stops when you get indoors, you should not worry, otherwise you should consult a doctor.
My eyes are watering at the corners
The eyes water in the corners because the lacrimal openings crown the canals in the corner of the eye near the bridge of the nose. In turn, they are connected to the lacrimal sac, which passes into the nasolacrimal canal. It is because of this relationship that when the nose flows, the eyes also water. The eye is covered with a three-layer film, the first layer of which is mucus and covers the cornea of the eye, the second is water (tears), the third is an oily substance that holds the second layer and does not allow the tears to dry. It is the last layer, when it dries, that forms peculiar flakes in the corners of the eyes, which do not cause any harm.
Eyes water after surgery
Eye surgery is necessary for cataracts and consists of replacing the clouded lens with an artificial one. If there are no complications, a person can walk a few hours after the surgery and is discharged from the hospital in 5-6 days. During this period, it is important to follow all the doctor's recommendations: do not do heavy work, do not accidentally injure the eye, and use the prescribed drops. If the eye is watery after surgery, or even worse - red and sore, you should immediately contact a doctor, as this may indicate infection and the onset of inflammation.
Eyes water at night
Sometimes a person faces a problem when eyes water even at night. Such a pathology can be associated with age-related changes, in which the skin under the eyes sags, the lower eyelid drops and involuntary lacrimation occurs. Eyes can water at night with ARVI or flu. These diseases, which have already been mentioned, cause conditions when eyes water in sleep, fever, runny nose, cough. Chemical effects on the eyes are possible if there are cosmetics or various cleaning and washing products nearby that emit a smell. Pathology of the sebaceous glands is also possible. An ophthalmologist will establish the cause, self-medication can be harmful.
Eyes water after eyelash extensions
In recent years, it has become common to correct various natural flaws in human physiology using artificial methods. The same thing happens with eyelashes. It is convenient for women not to waste time every morning on makeup and to look good, so they resort to extensions. But sometimes problems arise and the eyes begin to water after eyelash extensions. The reason for this may be in the procedure itself, since it lasts for 1.5-2 hours with the use of various drugs and tools, including a special glue that fixes the eyelashes. It can cause allergies, and hypoallergenic is not so durable. Also, the eye waters and red eyelids are due to the fact that during extensions, pads are used to isolate the lower eyelashes. When they are not glued correctly, injury is possible. It is best to use gel or silicone pads for this.
Eyes are watering in glasses
There are cases when eyes water in glasses. There are several reasons for this phenomenon. If glasses were bought without an ophthalmologist's prescription, the distance between the optical centers of the lenses may be incorrectly selected, which causes the eye muscle to become overstrained, and the eyes to become inflamed and watery. Discomfort may also occur with incorrect selection of diopters, when the focusing system is overstrained, with an unsuccessful fit of the frame or an unsuitable lens shape.
My eye is watering and my ear is hurting
Inflammation of the middle ear - otitis has several stages in its development. It begins with the ears being blocked and the eyes watering, then a sharp pain appears, which over time increases and spreads to the throat, neck, teeth, eye, and the temperature rises. It is for this acute stage of acute otitis that the combination is characteristic - the eye is watering and the ear is hurting. At the next stage, the pain weakens, the ear begins to flow, the temperature drops, the pressure on the eye disappears and the tearing stops.

Eyes water when teething
Often, when teething, a child's eyes water and salivate excessively. This is due to the fact that the growing tooth tears soft tissues and this process is quite painful. Sometimes the temperature rises, discomfort is felt. Saliva gets into the nasopharynx, causing a runny nose, which is accompanied by the release of tear fluid from the eyes. In addition, at this time, the immune system is greatly weakened, which is fraught with colds, which have the same symptoms.
My eyes water from eating onions
Do your eyes water from onions? No problem, it's a natural reaction of the body to irritants. When cutting onions, enzymes are released - ferments that accelerate chemical reactions in living organisms. Volatile sulfur, which is found in onions, mixes with tears when it reaches the eyes, begins to burn and irritate the mucous membrane. To protect the organ, the synthesis of tear fluid increases. In addition, volatile sulfur gets into the nose, causing the same reaction, which further increases the secretion of tears. To reduce the effect of enzymes on the organs of vision, it is necessary to dip the onion or knife in water before cutting, then the reaction will occur earlier and volatile sulfur will not get into the eyes.
My throat hurts and my eyes are watery
Symptoms of sore throat and watery eyes are typical of adenovirus infection. This is an acute infectious respiratory disease that affects the mucous membranes of the nasopharynx, eyes, intestines and lymph. It is characterized by fever, runny nose (rhinitis), sore throat (pharyngitis), weakness and watery eyes (conjunctivitis). There are several forms of the disease. In acute respiratory disease, against the background of severe inflammation of the pharynx and nasal passages, the mucous membrane of the eyes and cornea is affected. The patient experiences itching in the nose and watery eyes. Pharyngoconjunctival fever is accompanied by a burning sensation, a sensation of a foreign body in the eye. In epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, the eyes water and the eyelids swell, the cornea becomes cloudy, sometimes leading to its destruction and loss of vision.
Eyes water after lenses
An eye that is watering after using lenses is a sure sign that something is wrong. The lenses may be incorrectly selected (wrong diopter, radius of curvature or diameter). Exceeding the permissible time of their use (no more than 12 hours a day), an expired period of use from the time of opening the package are factors that can cause such a reaction. The solution for storing lenses or their composition can cause an allergy. A speck of dust may penetrate along with the lens, which will cause microtrauma to the eye. In case of infection, purulent discharge will join the lacrimation.

My eyes are watering from the light
Any light is a powerful irritant for our eyes. Eyes water from light - this is how the body's natural defense manifests itself. People with blue and gray eyes are especially susceptible to photophobia, since their iris has little pigment. In order not to experience discomfort from this, you need to wear sunglasses or do eye solarization. The authors of this method are convinced that the eyes exist as an organ of perception and use of light, and the sun is its healer. Closing yourself from the light with glasses only harms yourself, it is better to adapt our organ of vision to it.
My eyes are watery after welding
During welding with an electric welding tool, sparks fly, an electric arc is created, emitting ultraviolet light and causing a burn of the cornea of the eye. This condition is called electrophthalmia and is manifested by a burning sensation in the eyes, their redness, photophobia, clouding of the corneal epithelium, and also watery eyes, a veil is formed. In this case, you should not rub them, rinse them under water or drip the first drops that come to hand. If your eyes are watery after welding, you should go to the doctor, because only he can assess the severity of the lesion and prescribe the correct treatment, which will help to avoid complications.

Vomiting and watery eyes
The adenovirus infection, which has already been mentioned, affects the mucous membranes of not only the nasopharynx and upper respiratory tract, but also the digestive organs. As a result, nausea after eating, vomiting and watery eyes appear. The main route of transmission of such an infection is contact fecal-oral (through dirty hands, unwashed food), alimentary (through water in stagnant bodies of water, swimming pools), airborne (during sneezing, coughing). This virus has up to 90 varieties. The peak incidence occurs in the cold season, when the immune system is weakened and more suitable conditions for its reproduction.
My eye is watering and twitching
Many people have experienced the phenomenon of eye twitching. Eye tics are caused by involuntary muscle contractions and often reflect the state of our nervous system – increased neuroreflex excitability. Stress and various experiences lead to the occurrence of tics. When an eye is watery and twitches, there may be other reasons. One of them is a lack of vitamins and microelements. Thus, calcium is responsible for neuromuscular conductivity, its deficiency leads to cramps and spasms. Lack of magnesium provokes tics, twitching. Lack of glycine leads to disruptions in the functioning of the central nervous system. Eyes often water and twitch from the monitor due to overwork. Sitting for many hours in front of a computer screen causes such hyperkinesis.

My eyes water after using cosmetics
Low-quality cheap cosmetics sometimes cause an allergic reaction, and this leads to watery eyes after using cosmetics. It is not necessarily mascara, eye shadows that cause watery eyes, even foundation can cause watery eyes. The fact is that any facial care products, in addition to the main ingredients, contain chemical preservatives, otherwise they will not last the period stated on the packaging. High-quality components are more expensive and safer to use. Therefore, even in the absence of hypersensitivity, such a response from the body is possible. It is best to first use samples or cosmetics from famous brands.
My eyes water when I read
Eye fatigue often leads to watery eyes when reading. Some people are prone to binge reading, and there are also action-packed works that you can't tear yourself away from. But you need to control yourself, take breaks, and give your eyes a chance to rest. It is important to have good lighting in the room where you read and well-chosen glasses, if you use them.
My eyes are watery after the bath
A bathhouse and high temperatures are inseparable concepts. Various materials used in the design of the room, heating devices can release harmful chemical compounds under the influence of temperature. If your eyes are watering after a bathhouse, then this is exactly what happened to you. To confirm your suspicions, you need to give up going to this establishment for a while, and then choose another one, finished with wooden building materials.
Eyes water with diabetes
Diabetes can lead to serious eye diseases: cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy. High blood sugar levels have a negative effect on the visual mechanism, worsen vision and can lead to blindness. And eye watering in diabetes can be due to glaucoma, blepharoconjunctivitis, which occurs against the background of high blood sugar levels and can be bacterial or demodectic. Another reason is dry eye syndrome, which develops as a result of taking hypoglycemic drugs.
Eyes water with glaucoma
Eyes water with glaucoma, because with this disease, the drainage of fluid inside the eye is disrupted, its accumulation occurs, as a result of which the pressure on the vessels and nerves of the eye increases. In addition to lacrimation, headaches and pain in the eyes occur, a veil is cast before the eyes, visual acuity deteriorates, and a person sees halos around light sources. Ignoring the problem leads to disastrous consequences - complete loss of vision.
[ 55 ]
My eyes are watering from watching TV
The main reason why your eyes water from watching TV is because they are overtired. A TV screen or a computer monitor requires a certain amount of eye strain, and looking at one point for a long time increases the strain on them. If you have a problem with your eyes while watching TV, you need to be more careful when choosing the distance from the TV and the lighting in the room. Commercial breaks give you the opportunity to change your focus, move away from the screen, and do some eye exercises.
Eyes water after albucid
Albucid is an eye drop with an antimicrobial effect. It is used for conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis (diseases caused by streptococci, staphylococci, E. coli, gonococci, chlamydia). It is also used for prevention after operations. Eyes water after Albucid with increased individual sensitivity to sulfonamides, to which it belongs, with an overdose, simultaneous use with drugs containing silver salts, after the expiration date and violation of storage conditions (28 days after opening the bottle in a dark place, temperature 8-15 0 C).
[ 56 ]
After anesthesia, my eyes are watery
When eyes water after anesthesia, it is a rather rare (according to statistics, 1 case per 2000) complication of anesthesia, which does not lead to visual impairment. This happens because the eyelids are not always closed during anesthesia, and if the operation lasts long enough, the cornea of the eye becomes dry and the eyelid sticks to it. When opening the eyes, it is slightly injured, which leads to lacrimation, sometimes a blurry point appears.
Eyes water after drinking alcohol
People after a heavy drinking bout or a long spree can be identified immediately: watery eyes, a swollen face, an unhappy look. The appearance of chronic alcoholics leaves no doubt about the presence of a pernicious addiction: a swollen blue face, red eyelids, chapped lips, shaking hands. The harmful effects of alcohol on the cardiovascular system and the functioning of the central nervous system are known, but why do eyes water after alcohol? The explanation for this lies in the fact that alcohol leads to a narrowing of the vessels of the oculomotor muscles and the optic nerve. As a result, the supply of blood and oxygen to the visual organ is reduced. In addition, blood pressure in the eyes increases, small vessels burst, and micro-effusions appear. Often, people with a hangover not only have watery eyes, but also a network of red veins forms on the white of the eye, pain, stinging and itching are felt. With such sensations, there is a desire to rub the eyes, and this leads to the entry of pathogenic bacteria into them. All this is a prerequisite for the loss of visual acuity.
My eyes are watery and I want to sleep
Watery eyes and drowsiness are interconnected phenomena, because when we want to sleep, we yawn, at this time the muscles of the eye canal are compressed and tears involuntarily roll out. The mechanism of yawning itself is associated with the functioning of the brain. Lack of oxygen, which occurs during fatigue, being in a poorly ventilated room, causes this reflex. Yawning, a person swallows oxygen in an increased volume, it enters the brain and enriches it, and the exhaust carbon dioxide is excreted from the body. Therefore, the tandem: watery eyes and want to sleep is a normal physiological process. If the eye is not injured, not inflamed, then there should be no concern if the eyes are watery before going to bed.
In spring, eyes water
When eyes water in spring and autumn, this is the body's reaction to a change in temperature or to the brightness of the sun. Sometimes our visual organ is unable to abruptly change from one climate to another. It takes some time to get used to it. Sunglasses and contrast baths with hot and cold water can help with this. If eyes water and feel like sand, then an allergy to the flowering of some plant in spring is possible. In this case, it is better to consult an ophthalmologist and allergist to determine the cause and get recommendations for eliminating the unpleasant symptom.
After DPT my eyes are watery
The abbreviation DPT - adsorbed pertussis-diphtheria-tetanus vaccine prevents the occurrence of these dangerous infectious diseases in children. This vaccination, like others, puts a strain on the entire child's body and can cause various responses: fever, redness of the injection site, loss of appetite, nervousness. It happens that after DPT, eyes water, a runny nose appears. This happens due to a weakened immune system, cold symptoms appear, and a runny nose is associated with swelling of the nasal septum, as a result of which lacrimation occurs.
The eye is watery, the pupil is constricted
The pupil is a small round opening in the iris of the eye, 2-6 mm in diameter, through which light rays penetrate. Its narrowing or widening occurs due to the circular and radial muscles. The pupil usually narrows in bright light, and after the irritant is removed, it widens. But such a symptom may also indicate the presence of a disease, the use of drugs or certain medications, the fading of a person's brain activity, a disorder of the thyroid gland, or a stroke. If the eye is watery and the pupil is narrowed, this may be a sign of eye diseases: inflammation of the iris (iritis), corneal damage, vascular inflammation, etc. Only a doctor can determine the correct diagnosis.
Eyes water after sex
If sex causes tears of joy, then this is just a manifestation of emotions, happiness. Sexual intercourse is associated with excitement, tension, which is often manifested by reddening of the face and watery eyes. A more sad consequence of sex is infection with chlamydia. Reiter's syndrome is a disease in which several organs are affected sequentially or simultaneously, including the eyes in the form of conjunctivitis. Itching, photophobia, and tears appear.
My eyes water when I laugh
If you laugh heartily and loudly, tears start to flow. Eyes water when laughing because during this process a person squints, the muscles contract and press on the tear ducts, which, in turn, put pressure on the lacrimal sac, fluid is released.
[ 59 ]
After facial nerve neuritis, the eye is watery
Facial nerve neuritis is a disease in which the craniofacial nerve is affected, which is responsible for facial expressions, lip and eyelid movements. The eye on the affected side does not close, and the lower eyelid may be everted. Since the eye is constantly open, the corneal membrane dries out, causing lacrimation. Conjunctivitis and keratitis, an inflammation of the cornea, may develop, which are also characterized by this phenomenon.
[ 60 ], [ 61 ], [ 62 ], [ 63 ]
After probing the lacrimal canal, the eye is watery
Probing of the lacrimal canal is a procedure used when it is blocked. Obstruction occurs due to congenital pathologies of the head, poor functioning of the drainage system, age-related changes, infectious diseases, injuries, neoplasms, and taking medications. If the canal is blocked, the natural outflow of fluid is disrupted, the eyes water, swell, turn red, and an infection develops. Probing is used to check the patency of the canals. A special instrument is inserted into the canal, widening it. If this is the problem, the unpleasant symptoms will go away. After probing the lacrimal canal, the eye may water for a while. But if you properly care for the eye after the procedure, observe hygiene rules, and massage it, everything will work out. If the lacrimation does not go away, then you need to look for another reason.
Eyes water with VSD
Vegetative-vascular dystonia is classified as a neurosis in which the regulation of vascular tone is disrupted. This name covers many different symptoms related to failures in the cardiovascular, respiratory and other systems. Periodically, attacks occur during which breathing is interrupted, the heart beats faster or there are interruptions in its work, sweat appears on the body, the face and eyes turn red, a feeling of fear appears, internal trembling, eyes water profusely. All these manifestations are secondary, so it is necessary to identify the true cause of such conditions and direct treatment to them.
The child's eye is watering
We have already considered why elderly people have watery eyes, but why do newborns have watery eyes? In the womb, the fetus's eyes are protected by a special gelatin film from amniotic fluid. After birth, the film breaks at the first cry. Lacrimal fluid begins to be produced by the third month of life, until this time the child cries without tears. Sometimes the film remains intact and prevents fluid from exiting the lacrimal sac, accumulating there and causing inflammation. Doctors recommend massaging it, but if this does not go away, then probing the lacrimal canal, which is done at the age of 2-3 months after the birth of the child, can get rid of this problem.
Watery eyes during pregnancy
Discomfort during pregnancy can also affect the organs of vision. Eyes water during pregnancy if there is not enough tear fluid to moisturize them. This can happen as a result of hormonal changes, when the level of estrogen production decreases. Another reason can be an allergy, flu, acute respiratory viral infection, or an eye injury.
Stages
If lacrimation occurs due to an eye disease, and is not caused by temporary irritants, then their condition will only worsen over time. At the initial stage, tears flow, then redness, swelling of the eyelids, and suppuration will occur. Without diagnosis and treatment, the disease progresses and can reach a dangerous stage not only for the organ of vision, but also for human life.
Diagnostics tearfulness
In ophthalmology, there are many different methods that help establish the correct diagnosis. The examination is carried out by an ophthalmologist in an office equipped with various special devices. Thus, if there is a suspicion of obstruction of the lacrimal canal, a test with a fluorescent dye is used. It helps to determine the functioning of the drainage system of the eyes. The Schirmer test helps to identify dry eye syndrome. A strip of paper is placed behind the lower eyelid and the extent to which it is saturated with tears is analyzed. Examination of the eyelash under a microscope for demodex is the basis for diagnosing demodicosis. Eye pressure is measured.
The arsenal of instrumental diagnostics of eye diseases includes various devices used to make a diagnosis. Probing of the eye canal is performed with a special thin instrument that is inserted inside. This procedure is performed for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Dacryocystography or dacryoscintigraphy provides an image of the eye outflow system. To do this, a contrast agent is dripped into the eye and an X-ray, CT or MRI is performed. An ultrasound of the eyeball will make it possible to detect a foreign body or a neoplasm. Glaucoma is determined using a special lens, and the procedure is called gonioscopy. Using a Goldman lens, the fundus is examined.
Differential diagnosis
A particular eye disease causing lacrimation is diagnosed based on the patient's complaints, anamnesis data, an ophthalmologist's examination and, if necessary, additional instrumental studies. As a rule, differentiation occurs between dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, allergic reaction, foreign body, keratitis.
Who to contact?
Treatment tearfulness
What to do if your eyes are watering? Of course, the first thing you need to do is determine the cause of this phenomenon. It is best to get examined by an ophthalmologist. Eyes are a very delicate and sensitive organ, so self-medication can easily harm them. In case of allergies, it is important to determine the allergen and, if possible, eliminate it from yourself. To relieve allergy symptoms, they resort to histamine receptor blockers and mast cell membrane stabilizers. Anti-inflammatory drugs are used to relieve swelling.
Rapid eye fatigue (asthenopia) often indicates poor vision and requires its correction, proper arrangement of the workplace and adherence to the work regime (good lighting, breaks from work, exercises to strengthen the eye muscles).
Blepharitis is difficult to treat. Regardless of the cause, careful eyelid hygiene is required. There are special gels and lotions for this. In addition, ointments and drops (moisturizing, containing an antibiotic, etc.) are prescribed, depending on the type of disease.
Dacryocystitis - inflammation of the lacrimal sac is most often treated in a hospital setting. Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and general strengthening drugs are prescribed.
When treating eyes, it should be remembered that anti-allergy drugs that stimulate the central nervous system should be instilled for no more than 5 days, in addition, they are contraindicated in ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and thyroid diseases. Treatment of viral conjunctivitis should last no more than 10 days. And long-term use of drops containing corticosteroids can lead to the development of glaucoma.
Remedies for watery eyes
Remedies for watery eyes include eye drops, the advantage of which over other drugs is that they act directly on the source of the pathology. There are various drops for watery eyes on the pharmaceutical market. So, when tired while working with a computer, drops are dripped that moisturize the eyes and create a protective film on its surface. These include artificial tear preparations, Vizin pure tear, Systane, Vidisik.
Visine pure tear - drip into the conjunctival sac. To do this, tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid with a clean hand, holding the bottle head down. A drop drips with each press. This should be done four times a day. Side effects from use are rare in the form of an allergic reaction. In this case, you should stop treatment. During pregnancy, the drug can only be used as prescribed by a doctor. Remove lenses before instillation.
For those who use contact lenses, Artelac, Oxial, Hilo-Comod, Hilozar-Comod and others are suitable.
Artelac - before using these drops, you also need to remove lenses and put them on after a quarter of an hour. The required dose is 1 drop several times a day. Side effects are possible such as burning, blurred vision, a feeling of the presence of a foreign body, rarely - allergy. Contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
For allergies, antihistamine eye drops are prescribed: lecrolin, allergodil, spersallerg, opatanol.
Allergodil - use one drop in the morning and evening, in case of severe allergies it is recommended to double the frequency, but not more than one and a half months. It is used starting from 4 years.
