The structure of the virion of the influenza B virus is similar to the structure of the influenza A virus. The genome consists of 8 fragments encoding 3 non-structural and 7 structural proteins. Antigenic properties of hemagglutinin and neuraminidase distinguish several serovariants. Antigenic drift is less pronounced than in virus A. Influenza type B viruses are responsible for local outbreaks and epidemics; pandemics do not cause.
