Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The number of deaths from the disease is 0.1% with an unperforated (unexploded) process and about 3% after perforation. It is worth noting that the deaths among hospitalized in the first day of the exacerbation are 7-10 times lower than among patients who received treatment later. These facts suggest that if the disease is detected in a timely manner, there is much more chance of surviving. To identify the problem, it is necessary to understand the nature of pain in appendicitis.
Symptoms of the pain in appendicitis
The main symptom of appendicitis is abdominal pain. At the initial stage of the disease, pain is noted throughout the abdominal region, and especially in the upper part, the patient is unable to specify the focus of pain, that is, the pain is indistinctly localized. Indistinctly localized pains are a characteristic phenomenon for a problem located in the small or large intestine, as well as in an appendix.
Usually, patients seek help, after a severe pain, lasting four to six hours. It is also difficult for the patient to indicate the exact place of pain with appendicitis, but in the first hours there is some localization in the epigastric zone, that is, under the pit of the stomach. Then the pain begins to localize in the right ileal region, has a permanent character and, usually, is moderately pronounced.
Pain in appendicitis can change intensity, but does not stop even for a short period of time. If the pain has sharply and significantly increased, this is a very bad sign, which may indicate a perforation (rupture) of the appendix. Sharp pain, accompanied by anxiety, can talk about the form of acute appendicitis, with the formation of a closed purulent cavity in the appendix. It is also worth noting that pain in appendicitis is aggravated during walking and movements. Usually, the patient's walk is very cautious with the hands located on the right ileal region, these signs can reveal pain during appendicitis, even if a person does not report it.
Calming pain during appendicitis does not indicate that things have gone smoothly, usually due to the progressive gangrene of the appendix and the dying of nerve endings. Pain in acute appendicitis in the second half of the period of pregnancy has certain characteristics: it is less pronounced and localized above, due to the displacement of the appendix.
Patients are characterized by loss of appetite and nausea, as well as a single vomiting in the first hours of the disease. Also, there is often a delay in the stool, which is sometimes taken for the cause of the illness and can deceive the patient, his loved ones, and sometimes even inexperienced medical personnel, leading to unnecessary and dangerous measures on their part aimed at cleaning the intestines.
Study of the abdomen using the method of palpation reports on muscle resistance and spot soreness in the ileum. During even cautious fretting, patients notice severe pain in the right iliac region due to a concussion of the inflamed peritoneum. Objective symptoms, characteristic only of acute appendicitis, do not exist. Therefore, with the slightest suspicion, consultation with an experienced specialist is necessary.
Additional symptoms of appendicitis
- a symptom of the roving - in case of jerky pressure on the left ileal region, pain is noted in the right, due to the movement of gas masses through the large intestine.
- Symptom Sitkovsky - exacerbation of pain during lying on the left side, due to the shift of the cecum with appendicitis and tension of the peritoneum.
- a symptom of Bartome-Michelson - an increase in pain, during palpation, lying on the left side.
- symptom of Voskresensky - in the right ileal region there is an increased soreness, when moving by hand, through a strained shirt, from the area under the spoon to the right ileal region.
- Symptom Obraztsova - soreness increases during lifting of the right leg, lying on the back.
