Large and small diamond-shaped muscles - m. Rhomboideus major and minor
Move the scapula to the spine and partly upward. Also rotate the scapula medially, lowering the glenoidal depression downward. These muscles assist in the strong reduction and extension of the shoulder, stabilizing the scapula.
Onset: spinous processes of VI-VII cervical vertebrae and I-IV thoracic vertebrae.
Attachment: Margo medialis scapulae
Innervation: spinal nerves C5-C6-n. Dorsalis scapulae
Diagnosis: Rhomboid muscles are best examined by the patient sitting on a chair and lowering his arms forward. In this position, the shoulder blades move apart. Triggeral zones during palpation are revealed along the medial edge of the scapula. With deep palpation, the trigger zone can cause reflected pain, however, a local convulsive response is extremely rare. Once the boundaries of the rhomboid muscles are defined, the doctor can identify tight strings containing the trigger zone, deep palpation, carried across the muscle fibers, at a convenient position of the patient.
Reflected pain: Concentrates on the vertebral margin of the scapula between the scapula and the paravertebral muscles.
