Keratoglobus is a globular cornea. The cause of the disease, as well as with keratoconus, is the genetically determined weakness of the elastic properties of the cornea. Unlike the keratoconus, the central and peripheral parts of the cornea are stretched, so it grows in size, swells and takes the form of a ball. The depth of the anterior chamber is increased and can reach 8-10 mm. A sudden appearance of the edema of the entire cornea is called acute keratoglobus, or dropsy of the cornea.
Symptoms of keratoglobus
Keratoglobus manifests itself in childhood, it can be combined with other changes in the eye and general pathology, for example, with the blue sclera syndrome (Van der Huve), including bony deafness and brittle bones.

Treatment of keratoglobus
As the process progresses, the curvature of the cornea and the total length of the eyeball gradually increase, the refraction of the eye increases, the degree of myopia and astigmatism increases. In the initial stages of effective spectacle and contact correction of visual acuity.
With a significant stretching of the cornea and the presence of abnormal astigmatism, it is not possible to select a satisfactory correction, so they decide the question of surgical treatment. Throughtotal keratoplasty in keratoglobus is much more difficult to perform than with keratoconus, due to the sharp thinning of the peripheral part of the cornea, where the donor graft is fixed. The operation gives a good result if the parents help the child in the postoperative period during the year to exercise caution while moving, to avoid accidental injuries.
