The sooner the treatment of the tooth cyst is prescribed, the more likely the patient will retain the tooth.
The tooth cyst is an inflammatory formation consisting of a capsule with semi-liquid contents. Pathology is formed as a result of traumatic or infectious lesions of the gum. The cyst develops within it, closer to the tooth root, having a harmful effect on intact bone tissue.

Methods of treatment of a tooth cyst
Many different causes affect the choice of the necessary therapeutic technique in the treatment of the dental cyst.
Conservative treatment option allows to do without surgical intervention, however this method is long and does not guarantee a 100% effect. After opening the dental cavity, the canal is mechanically cleaned of purulent contents, disinfected and a so-called "temporary" seal is installed. Within 3-6 months for a tooth are observed, and decide whether to stop treatment or on the appointment of an operation.
If this method proved ineffective (and this is allowed, on average, in 30% of cases), there may be several reasons for this: the age characteristics of the patient, the state of his immune defense, the stage of development of pathological education.
Unfortunately, the tooth cyst is diagnosed, as a rule, already at the critical form of the process. In this case, the only therapeutic option may be a method of surgical surgery, which provides an unambiguous effectiveness of treatment.
Treatment of root tooth cyst
This disease can be treated both conservatively and surgically.
Conservative treatment includes drilling out a damaged tooth, cleaning root canals with bactericidal fluids, and prescribing drug therapy aimed at eliminating a pathological focus. This treatment option is the most sparing, however, after 6 months, the patient requires a re-examination to exclude relapse of the disease. Great popularity in recent years has acquired depophoresis - a dental method of endodontic canal cleaning using copper-calcium hydroxide under the influence of a weak electric field. Through passage through the channels, the drug enters the cyst, deep into the cyst, damaging it. After several such procedures, a seal is placed on the tooth, and the drug remaining in the cavity continues to function after the procedure.
Surgical therapy consists in extracting the affected elements of the tooth root and tissues, or in the complete removal of the tooth.
- The method of cystectomy is the operative removal of the cyst.
- The method of hemisection is the operative removal of the whole root system of the tooth with the subsequent covering of the surviving remains of the tooth with a crown.
Treatment of a tooth cyst by alternative means
Treatment of a cyst of a tooth by methods of traditional medicine can be supplemented with application and some alternative means. But it should be noted that the main therapeutic effect should be prescribed by a dentist.
Let's consider some concomitant alternative recipes:
- Saline solution - a tablespoon of salt (preferably iodized) is diluted with warm boiled water until complete dissolution. It is used for rinsing a sick tooth several times a day;
- alcohol solutions - vodka, tinctures on alcohol with herbs (calendula, aloe, St. John's wort, chamomile). Do not use solutions containing more than 40% alcohol, to avoid damage to the oral mucosa;
- broths of herbs - 2 tablespoons of dried herbs (sage, chamomile, eucalyptus, yarrow) are brewed on a glass of boiling water. Rinse the mouth with a freshly boiled broth throughout the day. The broth can not be used hot, it is necessary to cool it to body temperature;
- garlic - a piece of garlic cloves, or a gruel from it is applied to the diseased portion of the gum. Do not take too long to avoid burns.
Alternatives are important in the treatment of tooth cysts, but the main therapeutic method is to choose a dentist.
Treatment of a cyst of a tooth by the laser
One of the most modern technologies for therapeutic treatment of the cyst of the tooth is laser. It has many advantages, and therefore it is used by dentists more and more often: this method does not require tooth extraction, there is no danger of infection through the instrument, the procedure is absolutely painless, does not require additional application of anesthesia. After the laser session, there is a rapid recovery, in addition, the laser itself strengthens the teeth and gums, and also acts as a preventive against caries.
Directly into the dental canal, and from there and into the cyst, a laser is introduced that depresses the vital activity of bacteria, destroys the cystic formation and disinfects the dental root. The effectiveness of this procedure is more than 99%.
After conducting a laser therapy session, the dentist will recommend refraining from eating food and liquids for four hours. The oral cavity for some time will need to be treated with an antiseptic, but the healing will take place fairly quickly and comfortably.
Preparations for the treatment of tooth cysts
With the conservative treatment of tooth cysts, some anti-inflammatory and pain medications can be used.
Anesthetics used in dentistry are classified as non-narcotic analgesics: they do not affect clarity of consciousness, do not provoke dependence, have acceptable analgesic effect. Such drugs are analgin-containing drugs, nimesil, ibuprofen.
The main part of anti-inflammatory drugs has a direct effect on the inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins (inflammatory regulators) by the inhibition of cyclooxygenase. Due to this the inflammation process slows down, symptomatology, soreness disappears.
- ketonal - a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used in dentistry for relief and alleviation of the inflammatory process. Take 1 capsule three times a day, or in injections;
- Nurofen (an analog of ibuprofen) is a derivative of phenylpropionic acid. Take from 200 to 400 mg three times a day;
- Voltaren (analogue of orthophene, or diclofenac sodium) - used in tablets or injections, depending on the doctor's recommendations;
- nimesil (nimesulide) - a powder soluble in water, use 1-2 doses per reception.
It should also be noted analgin containing drugs tempalgin, pentalgin, sedalgin, etc., which have a less pronounced analgesic effect, but are still used by many doctors to alleviate the condition of the patient.
Treatment of tooth cyst by antibiotics
After a cystectomy for a tooth cyst, with the purpose of preventing complications, or for other indications, the patient may be prescribed antibiotic therapy. Usually these are broad-spectrum antibiotics that help at any stage cope with an infectious agent.
In the past years, the most popular among dentists used drugs lincomycin and tetracycline. Now the range of used funds is much wider, and the drugs themselves are stronger and more effective. Here are some of them:
- amoxicillin (amoksiklav, augmentin) - semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic, has an excellent antimicrobial effect. Take 500 mg immediately three times a day before meals;
- pefloxacin (abaktal) - fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent;
- ciprofloxacin - a very common and effective drug, apply to 0.25 g twice daily;
- azithromycin (sumamed) - a macrolide antibiotic. Take the first day of 500 mg once, on the next day for 250 mg at a time;
Local antibiotics are also used, but they are rarely prescribed because of the inability to create with their help the necessary concentration on the entire volume of the lesion, as well as maintaining a constant certain amount of the drug on the surface of the tissues.
Surgical treatment of a tooth cyst
Earlier, surgical treatment of the cyst implied removal of it along with a damaged tooth. Now there are several sparing tooth-saving methods:
- Cystotomy. Following local anesthesia, the doctor opens the cystic capsule, cleans it, treats it with a bactericide and injects (sometimes) a cotton turunda with an antiseptic that is to be replaced or removed after a week. If the healing process has passed normally, then the operation is considered successful. It is fairly easy to tolerate, however, the recovery stage lasts a long time, along with a strict sanitation of the oral cavity.
- Cystectomy. More capacious operation, characterized by complete removal of the cyst and the affected element of the dental root. The cleaned capsule cavity is filled with a reducing substance, and the wound is sutured.
- Hemisection. There are cases when it is not possible to completely preserve the tooth. Then the cyst, damaged root and tooth area are removed, and the formed voids are filled with a special osteoplastic composition and are sewn.
Sometimes, with a great neglect of the process, still resort to a radical method of removing the cysts simultaneously with the tooth.
Treatment of the follicular cyst of the tooth
The follicular cyst is formed from the dental follicle in the early stages of its development, due to its damage or defect in the formation of epithelial tissue. Cystic formation does not give an opportunity to form a healthy tooth that does not yet have hard tissues.
Treatment of such cysts is only surgical. The methods of cystotomy or cystectomy are used depending on the location of the cyst, the stage of its development.
Plastic cystotomy is more often practiced in pediatric dentistry, as it allows for proper bookmarking and germination of the retentive tooth. In adulthood, such a tooth is often removed in many cases, since it can disrupt the construction of the dentition.
Cystectomy is used mainly in adults. The formed bone cavity is filled with special fillers. Complications after the operation are rare, and only with the previous suppuration of the internal contents of the cyst.
The follicular cyst can manifest itself not only separately, but also multiply, which greatly complicates the treatment of the process and makes it individual.
Treatment of a tooth after removal of a cyst of a tooth
To avoid the occurrence of complications, you need to carefully maintain oral hygiene. 2-3 days after removal, you can rinse with salted or soda water, and rinse your mouth after each meal.
After surgery, pain can not be avoided, so you can take analgesic drugs (analgin, solpadein).
Very often after removal, cysts are prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs, especially when they are prescribed for suspected complications. Also, antihistamine and antibacterial drugs are very important. Antibiotics of a wide spectrum of action accept a course strictly in the dosage prescribed by the doctor. During the period of taking antibiotics, especially potent antibiotics, it is recommended to take measures to prevent dysbacteriosis: use antifungal agents, take vitamin supplements.
Much attention is paid to diet: at first, after the removal of the tooth cyst is not recommended to eat rough food, too hot or cold, and also take alcoholic beverages; try to eat so that pieces of food do not fall on the damaged area and do not injure the gum.
Edema after treatment of a tooth cyst
The appearance of edema after surgery is the reason for contacting a doctor.
A small swelling of the gums may be a reaction of the body to surgical manipulation. Significant swelling accompanied by pain can cause the doctor to suspect osteomyelitis.
Osteomyelitis (bone inflammation) or alveolitis (inflammation of the gum) can result from bacteria entering the wound after removal of the cyst. For such inflammations, characteristic signs are hyperthermia, fetid odor from the oral cavity, pain, swelling of the mucosa, an increase in peripheral lymph nodes.
Timely treatment of these inflammatory processes is simple: the wound remaining after the removed cyst is disinfected with a bactericidal agent. Along with this, an X-ray is made to exclude the presence of remnants of the removed tooth in the gum, which can cause inflammation in the tissues.
In the presence of severe painful edema, an increase in body temperature to 39C, symptoms of general intoxication, there may be a suspicion of the development of inflammation of the periosteum. This kind of inflammation is treated surgically: an autopsy of the tumor, cleaning and stitching followed by antibiotic therapy.
The price of cure for a tooth cyst
How much will the cyst treatment cost? Of course, in the acute stage of the inflammatory process, this question, as they say, goes to the background, because the most important thing is health. For informational purposes, we looked at the approximate cost of treatment in several different clinics, and that's what happened:
- X-ray - up to $ 5;
- anesthesia infiltration - 5-6 $;
- surgical intervention-cystectomy of the odontogenic cyst, including laser treatment - from $ 90;
- operative intervention-cystectomy with resection of the tip of the tooth root (one tooth) - from 115 $;
- hemisection - from $ 40;
- closure of the cavity in the region of one tooth with bone-plastic mass - from $ 50;
- elimination of recession in the zone of one tooth root - from $ 150.
Timely begun qualified treatment is a good pledge of full recovery. Do not be afraid of visits to the dentist, because the timely treatment of the tooth cyst will help you speed up the healing process and protect against unpleasant consequences.
