What can and cannot be eaten with gout?

Before you start treating gout, you need to decide what you can and cannot eat with gout. After all, nutrition has a direct impact on the crystallization of uric acid in the body. For example, purines, a large percentage of which is present in animal products, play a major role in the development of the disease. Fans of alcoholic beverages are also at risk of getting gout, since alcohol retains salt crystals in tissues, inhibiting their excretion.
With gout, you will have to eliminate most animal products from your diet. This includes fatty fish and meat, canned goods, smoked meats and other "harmful things". Sometimes the doctor may allow the patient to eat a small piece of meat, about 200 g, per week. But in this case, you should never drink the broth in which this meat was boiled: it is the broth that contains the largest amount of purines.
When preparing food, it is necessary to use much less salt than before. The daily salt intake for gout patients is only 1 g.
Animal fats are completely replaced by vegetable fats.
The general characteristics of changes in nutritional principles for gout are as follows:
- The diet limits the amount of proteins and fats of animal origin. Plant analogues should make up at least 30% of the total amount.
- The exclusion list includes products containing purines and oxalic acid.
- Drinking plenty of fluids is encouraged, at least 2 liters per day. This helps remove uric acid from the body. Recommended: herbal teas, vegetable and fruit juices, fermented milk products, mineral water.
- If you have gout, you should absolutely not drink alcohol – this can affect the development of another attack of the disease.
- Fasting days are useful: they are carried out once every 7-10 days, using dairy products or vegetables. During fasting, it is important to remember the need to drink enough water.
- Dry fasting for gout is highly discouraged, as it can cause uric acid to accumulate in the tissues. Water fasting is possible, but should be agreed upon with a doctor.
What can and should you eat if you have gout?
- Cereals and pasta.
- All kinds of vegetables and broths made from them.
- Dietary white meat (chicken, turkey).
- Dietary fish, seafood.
- Low-fat fermented milk products.
- One chicken egg a day.
- Any dried fruits except dried grapes.
- Beekeeping products.
- Various nuts and seeds.
- Homemade jam, marshmallows.
- Green teas, compote and jelly (unsweetened), fruit and vegetable juices, mineral water.
- Fruits and berries (excluding raspberries).
- Bread.
- Vegetable oils.
Patients with gout are recommended to eat 5 times a day, in small portions. The diet should be varied and necessarily contain the following products:
- apples: even one apple a day can neutralize a large amount of uric acid;
- carrots: helps purify the blood;
- cherries: rich in antioxidants and help eliminate inflammation;
- banana: contains a large amount of potassium, which is able to liquefy crystalline uric acid, accelerating its elimination from the body.
For those who cannot decide what they can and cannot eat with gout, it is recommended to switch to a vegetarian diet, which automatically excludes any type of meat and fish, as well as animal fats, from the diet.
What should you absolutely not eat if you have gout?
It is absolutely necessary to avoid the following products:
- from fatty meat and fish dishes, offal;
- from sausages;
- from mushrooms;
- from lard and butter;
- from legumes;
- from alcoholic beverages;
- from salted, canned and smoked products;
- from strong coffee, chocolate, grapes, raspberries, butter cakes and pastries;
- from hot sauces and spices.
