The lazy intestine syndrome is a pathological condition based on a violation of the motor-evacuation function of the colon, weakening of its peristalsis or a decrease in the sensitivity of the rectal mucosa to the presence of feces inside, which causes chronic constipation.
Epidemiology
Today, there is an increase in the incidence of the syndrome of the lazy intestine - in different countries its prevalence varies between 4-27%, and it grows not only in Europe but also in Asia, where earlier this disease was quite a rare phenomenon (due to cultural characteristics nutrition in this region). According to the results of the meta-analysis of 2011 (based on social studies) on different continents, it was found out that the prevalence of chronic constipation is in the range of 12-17%. A related Asian research, which was conducted in China, South. Korea, as well as Indonesia, showed that the syndrome is common in 15-23% of women and about 11% of men. Statistical information from countries such as the United States shows figures in this regard at around 15%.
It should be noted that lately the incidence of laziness syndrome has become comparable with other diseases in the population. Sometimes it even exceeds the figures for the incidence of coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and bronchial asthma. But this syndrome still continues to be perceived as a rare and mild disease.
It should be noted that chronic constipation is 3 times more common in women, and the figure increases with age.
The trend continues for the age of patients - the prevalence of the disease rises to 50% in people older than 65 years, and the end of life in general to as much as 74%.
Causes of the laziness syndrome
There are several causes of the syndrome of the lazy intestine. Among them:
- Sedentary work - lack of physical activity leads to disruption of blood circulation in the small pelvis;
- Ignoring the urge to defecate - this has a negative effect on the digestive system. Therefore, you should try to visit the toilet immediately if you have a poke;
- Pregnancy - as the uterus grows, the load on the organs located in the abdominal cavity increases, which complicates the process of defecation;
- Disruption of diet - very harmful to the intestines, long-term fasting, as well as diets. In addition, stools cause baking and baking, confectionery, smoked products, salted fish and cheese;
- Age - in elderly people the process of synthesis of digestive enzymes is disrupted;
- Frequent stresses often cause the appearance of problems with the gastrointestinal tract.
- Abuse of laxatives.
- Eating disorders, in particular, anorexia nervosa and bulimia.
Pathogenesis
The pathogenesis of the disease is associated with the development of disturbances in the regulation of the intestine - more specifically, with the failure of its motor function, which leads to alternation of constipation with diarrhea. During constipation, such disorders cause a decrease in the functional activity of the intestine, especially in the case of the sigmoid colon (megacolon).
Due to the slowing down of the transit process, additional absorption of the intestinal water is observed, which causes the volume of stool to decrease and its density to increase. Dry hard feces eventually evacuated from the intestine with great difficulty.
That is why the pathophysiology of the lazy intestine is associated either with the fact that the volume of fecal matter entering the rectum becomes significantly less, or with a violation of the defecation process, in which removal of feces is difficult. Reduces the volume of feces in the rectum due to a violation of its motility, the occurrence of mechanical obstruction, or because of a decrease in the size of the total volume of intestinal contents (this is observed during fasting).
The motility of the intestine (its propulsive movements with coordination, as well as tone) is disrupted due to various diseases (with problems with the dorsal as well as the brain, with organs in the abdominal cavity, a disruption in the endocrine system).
Symptoms of the laziness syndrome
Among the symptoms of the syndrome of the lazy intestine are the following manifestations:
- regular headache;
- poor appetite;
- a feeling of drowsiness, constant apathy and severe fatigue;
- rash on the skin;
- nervousness;
- bloating and heaviness in the stomach;
- infrequent bowel movements with dry, stiff feces (less than three times a week)
- difficulty with bowel movement or lack of stools at all.
Diagnostics of the laziness syndrome
To diagnose the syndrome, the doctor needs to examine the patient's stomach, and also to find out what complaints he has. In addition, a rectal examination is performed using a rectal finger examination - to determine the tone of the anal sphincter.
Analyzes
To diagnose the disease, doctors conduct the following laboratory tests:
- The analysis of feces, blood, and urine;
- They make a blood test for calcium, thyroid hormones and electrolytes.
Instrumental diagnostics
There are also procedures for instrumental diagnostics:
- Irrigoscopy / colonoscopy.
- X-ray of the intestine with contrast to evaluate the intestinal passage.
- Rectosigmoscopy.
- Anorectal manometry.
- Defecation proctography.
- Ultrasound of the thyroid gland, as well as organs of the abdominal region.
- MRI of the vertebral column.

Treatment of the laziness syndrome
In the treatment of the syndrome of the lazy intestine, candles are used, and in addition to this enema from a saline solution (1 cup of water 2 tsp) or with the addition of olive oil. To get rid of stool, laxative preparations (mainly osmotic - which detain the liquid in the intestine) are also needed. In some cases, the hardened feces must be removed using a probe or a finger (in the glove).
Vitamins
In the course of treatment, vitamins should be used - regular constipation of 400 mg of magnesium and 500 mg of vitamin C help to prevent constipation.
You can prepare a vitamin mixture - for this you need dates, figs, as well as raisins, prunes and dried apricots (in equal parts). Pass all ingredients through the meat grinder, then add 50 g of honey to the resulting mixture, as well as flax seeds and ground peanuts, and then mix. Take the mixture follows 1 hour before eating 1 tablespoon each.
