This problem is mostly familiar to people who actively engage in sports, but this injury does not bypass ordinary citizens, although it is somewhat more difficult to get in everyday conditions. Stretching of the hip ligaments - this is exactly what we are talking about.
It is worth clarifying that in this situation, ligament damage and muscle tissue injury should not be confused. These are slightly different things, and muscle injury is diagnosed by doctors quite often. At the same time, it is less painful and does not entail major complications.
Causes of Hip Strain
Each person has their own temperament and preferences. Some like to lie on the couch with a newspaper, while others prefer active recreation. Naturally, the latter are more likely to get injured, but the former are not immune to bruises, abrasions, falls with all the consequences that follow from this situation. What are the causes of hip ligament sprains?
- The main source of injury is a fall or an involuntary slip.
- Moving on uneven surfaces.
- An untreated injury that weakened the ligaments.
- A sudden change in body position can also lead to injury, forcing unprepared ligaments to work to break.
- A pathology that negatively affects nerve conduction and muscle tissue.
- You can also get injured as a result of a fracture caused by an accident.
- Congenital predisposition.
- Violation of safety precautions during sports activities.
- Monotonous movements with load.
The process of stretching is a complete or partial rupture of small fibers, which make up the ligamentous tissue. According to the severity of the pathology, orthopedic doctors divide this injury into several categories:
- Mild degree of pathology – a break in a small number of individual tissue threads.
- Moderate severity of damage – there is a rupture of all tissue connections, followed by their “fraying” (the fibers are torn and begin to separate from each other).
- Severe pathology - complete rupture of the ligament, with its subsequent detachment from the bone.
- Very rarely, but still, a particularly severe lesion is diagnosed when, together with torn ligaments, a chip of a piece of bone is observed. Orthopedists state such a pathology as an avulsion fracture.
In most cases, it affects children and adolescents who do not yet have a strong bone structure or elderly people who already have a history of age-related osteoporosis. Adult patients are still more prone to stretching of the hip ligaments, but this pathology occurs with greater complications, long courses of treatment and recovery periods. The severity of the disease largely depends on the following factors: the force of impact on the tissue, the nature of the applied load, the condition of the ligamentous apparatus of a person and his entire body.
Hip sprain
There are several reasons that can cause pain symptoms in this area, but all of them are related to pathological changes that have occurred in this area: damage to the fascia, bone, muscle and cartilage tissue, stretching of the ligaments of the hip joint. Ligament injury is quite common, especially among athletes. This can happen when a person experiences excessive stress on the connective tissues of the hip joint. If the elasticity of the ligaments is not enough to withstand the pressure, then a rupture or stretching of the hip ligaments occurs. Often, the doctor can observe not only such symptoms, but also other manifestations of injury.
If you fail to protect yourself and an accident occurs, you must act immediately to prevent further damage to the area, as delay can lead to weakening of the joint fixation itself, and subsequently to a bone fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to immediately provide first aid: fix the injured area with a tight bandage (elastic bandage) and apply cold. After this, it is imperative to show the sore joint to a specialist.
Symptoms of a Hip Sprain
This type of injury is more typical for professional sports. A large percentage of injuries to the ligament apparatus of this area occur in football players, swimmers, skaters, gymnasts and track and field athletes. Symptoms of hip ligament sprains are as follows:
- The appearance of severe pain. Localization - hip joint.
- The pain intensifies when you try to make any movement with this joint.
- Swelling and hyperemia of the skin may be observed in the area of injury.
- X-rays may show joint deformity.
- Gradually, the pain symptoms can "spread" across the thigh, losing its clear localization and then moving to the shin. But do not forget that such symptoms can also be caused by damage to the lumbar spine.
- In some cases, there is stiffness in movement and decreased joint mobility.

Diagnosis of hip sprains
If an injury occurs, the first thing to do is to immobilize the affected joint, apply cold, and urgently take the victim to see a doctor. Only a specialist can properly examine the patient and make a verdict.
Diagnosis of hip sprain includes:
- Analysis of patient complaints.
- Visual examination of the patient and palpation of the affected area.
- The doctor determines the mobility of the joint by moving the patient's lower limb in different directions.
- To more specifically identify the location of the hip ligament sprain, the doctor asks the victim to do several simple exercises.
- To exclude another pathology that manifests itself similarly, the doctor prescribes an X-ray. This is quite enough to make the correct diagnosis and no further examination is required.

Treatment of hip sprains
If a hip injury has occurred and a diagnosis has been made, then, first of all, treatment of a hip ligament sprain is reduced to ensuring the immobility of the joint. Only after that can we talk about further therapy, which largely depends on the degree of damage.
To somehow dull the pain, the patient is prescribed painkillers.
Brufen (Vpiep)
It all depends on the intensity of the pain and accompanying symptoms. Some patients will only need to take 0.6 - 1.2 g daily (in tablets), but the basic recommended daily dosage is still 1.2 - 1.8 g, divided into two or three doses. In case of clinical necessity, the amount of the drug can be increased, but the maximum dosage should not exceed 2.4 g per day. For babies, the dose of the drug is calculated depending on its weight - 20 mg per kilogram of the baby's weight, divided into several doses. In case of severe pathology, the dosage can be doubled.
Brufen is used externally in the form of a cream. A small amount of cream, a strip of four to ten centimeters, is squeezed onto the skin of the affected area and rubbed in with massaging movements. This procedure is carried out three to four times a day for two to three weeks.
The drug is contraindicated for use by patients with a history of: ulcerative lesions of the digestive system (especially in the acute phase), bronchial asthma, renal pathology, urticaria, chronic rhinitis, hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. It is not recommended to give to children whose body weight has not reached seven kilograms.
Novigan
The drug has excellent anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, analgesic properties and is taken four times a day: it is prescribed to patients over 15 years old, two tablets, teenagers aged 12-14 years old, one and a half tablets, children aged 8-11 years old - one tablet, and children aged five to seven - half a tablet.
Novigan is contraindicated if the patient also has the following diseases: exacerbation of ulcerative pathology of the gastrointestinal tract, collapse (rapid drop in blood pressure), intestinal obstruction, as well as in case of increased sensitivity of the patient's body to the components of the drug, during pregnancy and lactation.
Ibuclin
This anti-inflammatory, analgesic drug is prescribed to adults in the amount of one tablet three times a day. Children are prescribed Ibuclin in a daily dosage of 20 mg per kilogram of body weight of a small patient, divided into several approaches.
It is not recommended to take this medicine for patients suffering from gastrointestinal tract pathology caused by erosion or ulcerative lesions, with suppression of hematopoiesis, severe liver damage, with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as in case of pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If a complete ligament rupture occurs, then surgical intervention is required.
After drug therapy or in parallel with it, the doctor prescribes therapeutic physical training (LFK) exercises to the patient, which should restore the functional orientation of the joint. It is necessary to make every effort to avoid complications.
The set of therapeutic exercises is performed very smoothly, without jerking - this can only worsen the situation. All exercises are more designed for statics than dynamics. For example, holding the injured limb in a raised position on the count. Smooth circular movements of the leg - development of the disturbing joint. Over time, with a positive course of therapy, they begin to add loads.
It would be nice to connect a massage. But it should only be done by a specialist: the movements must be honed and careful, because one wrong movement is enough - and this can cause additional pain to the victim and worsen the situation. Initially, the area above the site of the lesion is massaged. Such a massage is done to relieve swelling and only with time the doctor will take the affected area into work. These manipulations are carried out once or twice a day for 10 - 15 minutes.
Traditional methods of treatment for sprained hip joint ligaments
Traditional medicine methods have also proven themselves to be quite effective in this situation. Below are the simplest and most effective remedies that helped our grandmothers.
- Mix the clay with sour milk until it reaches the consistency of thick sour cream. Add grated onion and potato, add shredded cabbage (it can be either pickled or raw). Apply this medicine as a compress to the damaged joint, preferably overnight.
- Combine the juice of one lemon and the juice obtained after squeezing a head of garlic. Soak gauze in this mixture and apply to the troubling area. Change the poultice until the pain goes away. The only contraindication for this composition may be an allergy to citrus fruits and/or garlic, or hypersensitivity of the patient's skin.
- Grind the onion on a grater and mix the resulting gruel with sugar, apply it to gauze and apply it as a compress to the sore joint.
- Knead the dough from salt, flour and water. Roll it into a tourniquet and apply it to the sore spot. Wrap it with wool or any other fabric on top. A few days of such procedures and the pain should go away.
- Mix together one part of crushed household soap, one part of egg yolks and two parts of warm water. Soak gauze or bandage in this solution and, constantly changing, apply the bandage to the affected area.
- You need to take several aloe leaves, wash them, crush them into a paste and apply them to the sore joint using gauze, cover with a fixing bandage and a warm scarf on top.
- Add 100 ml of vodka and two heads of garlic to half a liter of apple juice. Leave this mixture to infuse for two weeks, shaking the vessel with the infusion periodically (at least once every two days). On the third week, strain the mixture and add 15 drops of eucalyptus oil. Shake well. Can be used as an application.
- It is necessary to mix five drops of such aromatic oils as lavender and chamomile. Dilute them with a small amount of water and use for making compresses.
Using these simple recipes, which are easy to prepare at home, you can quickly get rid of the nagging pain in the area of the damaged hip joint, as well as significantly reduce the rehabilitation period to restore its normal functioning.

Prevention of hip sprains
No matter how severe the pathology is, it is better to prevent it than to treat it later. This can be said about our problem. Prevention of hip ligament sprains includes several simple rules.
- When walking, your feet should be wearing comfortable and convenient shoes. Your clothes should not be embarrassing either. Because too high a heel or too tight a skirt can cause you to fall or slip, which can lead to unpleasant consequences.
- It is necessary to constantly monitor your diet to avoid excess weight. Extra pounds are an additional burden on the joints and connective tissue.
- An active lifestyle will strengthen the muscle frame, which will at least partially take over the load. Trained muscles will protect the ligaments from damage.
- If a person is a professional athlete, before starting increased loads, it is worth warming up, stretching and stretching the muscles - this is an excellent prevention of hip ligament sprains.
- Try to avoid sudden movements.
Hip Sprain Prognosis
This lesion is an unpleasant but not fatal pathology. And how correctly the first medical aid is provided to the victim largely depends on the prognosis of the sprain of the hip ligaments. If, initially, everything was done correctly, and the patient quickly got to see a specialist, then it will not take much time for the victim to be able to return to his normal way of life. Otherwise, this moment will still come, but not so quickly, and the consequences may not be so rosy. Just do not self-medicate.
A beauty in high heels, an athlete running along the stadium track, or an elderly person - no one is immune from the diagnosis of hip ligament sprain. The main thing is not to lose control of the situation and, in the first minutes, to be able to correctly provide first aid. After all, it is on this that, in many ways, depends how long the treatment will be, the recovery period, and whether it will subsequently be aggravated by other pathological symptoms. After this, you should not self-medicate - it is necessary to take the victim to a specialist as soon as possible, who will take on further care of the patient. In light of the above, you should be more careful, demanding of yourself and attentive to others. And be healthy, you and your loved ones!
