In cosmetology, phlebology, various diseases associated with blood vessels are increasingly occurring: impaired microcirculation, varicose veins, the formation of a network with well-visible capillaries and rather pronounced bruising. The question of medical intervention is becoming more and more acute. The actual issue today is the removal of spider veins.
Can spider veins be removed?
Spider veins are not only a cosmetic problem, but also a very serious disease of internal organs. This is due to the fact that, in addition to the unattractive appearance, disturbance of the structure and external aesthetics of the skin, the development of corresponding diseases of the internal organs occurs. Also, the entire microcirculatory bed is disrupted, pathologies of small and large vessels develop.
Telangiectasias, or spider veins, are dilated venules or arterioles (small superficial veins) less than 1.0 mm in diameter and occur predominantly in the lower extremities [1]. Reticular veins are less than 3 mm in diameter, often tortuous and located in the subcutaneous or subcutaneous tissue. [2] The reason is unknown. Patients may be asymptomatic or report pain, burning, or itching. Risk factors include family history, pregnancy, local trauma, and hormonal factors. [3]
The defeat of the vessels is very dangerous, since blood circulation and elasticity of the vessels are always disturbed. In turn, this entails a violation of blood flow, a decrease in metabolic processes, a violation of trophism (penetration of nutrients into tissues, tissue metabolism, removal of metabolic products outside). Also, all this is accompanied by a violation of the exchange of gases, especially oxygen and carbon dioxide. As a result, hypoxia and hypercapnia develop. This significantly affects the condition of the internal organs, especially those that are highly sensitive to oxygen and nutrients.
One of the most difficult consequences of tissue metabolism disorders is the development of vegetative-vascular dystonia, neurocirculatory dystonia, violation of vascular elasticity, as a result of which a violation of vascular tone develops. The final stage of such complications can be cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, stroke.
Thus, all of the above indicates that this pathology can and should be fought. Answering the question: "Is it possible to remove the spider veins?", We get an unambiguous answer: "Yes. Spider veins can be treated or removed in a variety of ways.
Some of them look like outwardly too visible vessels that protrude through the skin and are visible to the naked eye. Some of them look like growths on the surface of the skin. Features of the course of the disease are determined by the localization of the inflammatory process. So, when localized in the area of the face, head, the main consequence is the external unattractiveness of a person, a violation of microcirculation, a violation of heat exchange of the skin. If asterisks appear on the limbs, their trophism and innervation are disturbed. When stars appear on the legs, swelling, pain when walking may appear. Ultimately, intermittent claudication, atherosclerosis develops, which can lead to atherosclerosis, lameness, and disability.
Diagnosis of telangiectasias and reticular veins is clinical and is made in accordance with the classification system of chronic venous diseases of the lower extremities according to the clinical, etiological, anatomical and pathophysiological (CEAP) system. This CEAP classification system consists of seven main categories, from C0 to C6, and telangiectasias are classified as C1. [4]
- C0 - no visible or tangible signs of venous disease.
- C1 - telangiectasia or reticular veins (filamentous veins)
- C2 - varicose veins (diameter 3 mm or more)
- C3 - edema
- C4 - changes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue: pigmentation (C4a), eczema (C4a), lipodermatosclerosis (C4b) or atrophic blanche (C4b)
- C5 - healed venous ulcer
- C6 - active venous ulcer
The incidence of telangiectasias increases with age. [5] Lower limb telangiectasias are very common and are found in 41% of women over the age of 50. [6] They pose an important aesthetic or cosmetic problem. [7] The presence of telangiectasias may be associated with insufficiency of the main venous systems; approximately 50% to 62% of insufficiently perforating veins are found in telangiectasias.
Technique of the removal of spider veins
Treatment for telangiectasias and reticular veins includes sclerotherapy, laser therapy, intense pulsed light therapy, microflebectomy, and thermocoagulation. These techniques can be used in combination to maximize effect and avoid harm from individual techniques.
There are many methods that are used to remove spider veins. Traditional methods are tried first. With a complex effect, it is possible to provide reliable prophylaxis, prevent the progression of the disease, remove stars that are small in size and quantitatively. Complex therapy, as a rule, is represented by drug treatment, physiotherapeutic methods, folk, homeopathic, remedies, herbal medicine. Physiotherapy exercises (exercise therapy), yoga, various oriental health-improving practices are mandatory. Correct breathing (pranayama, other breathing exercises) in combination with relaxation methods, meditative practices, auto-training means are effective and indispensable means to restore the state of blood vessels and the body as a whole. It is important to normalize nutrition, adhere to the required diet, drink enough fluids, diversify the menu with fresh fruits and vegetables, and consume enough vitamins and minerals. This is the only way to achieve the expected results and return the vessels to their normal, natural state.
With the ineffectiveness of the prescribed treatment or with a severe stage of pathology, multiple vascular pathologies, surgical methods are used in which the asterisks are removed with the help of an operation. A phlebologist, vascular or plastic surgeon, beautician can help with this.
Spider veins removal procedure
To remove it, you must contact a phlebologist or cosmetologist (if the asterisks are localized in the face area). There are a wide variety of methods, and the procedure for removing spider veins depends on which method is chosen. Each method has its own clearly structured methodology, which the doctor follows during the operation.
But in any case, all methods have several common stages. So, immediately before the procedure, an examination is carried out by a specialist. If necessary, they can take additional tests. The presence or absence of contraindications is determined. In their absence, preparation is carried out.
Before starting the operation, the doctor starts pretreating the skin. The specificity of preparation is determined by the type of operation. But common to all types of operations are disinfection and the creation of aseptic conditions. At this stage, the skin is treated with disinfectants and antiseptics. Other types of preparation are also used, depending on the type of operation. For example, during laser removal, the patient is wearing special safety glasses. Also, special masks, kerchiefs are used when carrying out cryoprocedures.
After the preparation has been completed, proceed directly to the operation to remove the asterisks. So, the technique depends on which method is chosen. After the procedure, postoperative skin treatment is performed. Apply special healing or restorative agents, disinfect. Additional (restorative) treatment may then be prescribed, if necessary.
Removal of spider veins with a laser
The procedure is quite simple, however, it requires a highly qualified specialist. This is due to the fact that the procedure requires a serious approach, high precision and skill. Even the slightest mistake can have serious consequences.
The duration of the procedure is 15 minutes on average. Sometimes 1 procedure may be required, but in some cases several procedures may be required, especially if the area of damage is large enough and there are many vascular networks. But in most cases, one session is sufficient. The procedure for removing spider veins with a laser is painless, has no complications or side effects. In rare cases, in the first days after the procedure, there may be slight redness in the treatment area, burning and itching. But such side effects do not last long. As a rule, serious complications are associated only with the human factor, and arise if the operation was performed by an inexperienced specialist.
Spider veins removal machine
For the operation to remove spider veins, an apparatus is required. It is used both on an outpatient basis and in a hospital setting. There is a wide variety of devices, each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most commonly used is the Harmony XL Pro, which is a laser platform with special attachments. This is an innovative technique used all over the world. Used by many clinics in Russia. The largest number of such devices is presented in clinics in Moscow. The most common models are the 1064 and 540.
These devices have a number of advantages, in particular, the ability to remove even minor defects. This applies not only to the removal of vascular pathologies, but other defects. The main process occurs due to the photothermolysis of pigments. The device works extremely quickly, the duration of the procedure does not exceed 2-3 minutes. After the procedure, a stable effect is noted, and repeated procedures are rarely required. With the help of this device, it is possible to combine various technologies, including the technology of laser and pulse treatment. The laser beam has a high penetrating power, and also allows you to process large surfaces, including on the face.
Also, a distinctive feature is that the device has a cooling effect, which significantly reduces pain. The device acts on the vessel safely, with minimal damage, since it has a point effect. This provides high selectivity, which allows you to act on problem areas, and not affect healthy tissue. It is also worth noting that the device activates collagen synthesis, respectively, the body rejuvenates. Suitable for all skin types and for a variety of shades.
Removal of spider veins with neodymium laser
Laser therapy is used to treat telangiectasias in patients with veins less than size 30 in diameter. Patients with a phobia of needles or allergies to certain sclerosing agents can also benefit from this method. There are several types of lasers for the treatment of telangiectasias with different wavelengths from 532 to 1064 nm. [8] Treatment with Nd: yag 1064 nm laser showed results similar to sclerotherapy. [9] Side effects of laser therapy for telangiectasias include erythema, crusting, edema and blistering. [10] Laser therapy can cause less pain, but it can also lead to complications such as spotting. [11]
The essence of the procedure is that laser radiation penetrates the affected area, concentrates in the place where the dilated vessel is located. Under the influence of radiation, the expanded vessel is heated and sealed. Accordingly, the blood flow in this vessel stops, which leads to the disappearance of the asterisks. The advantage is that the laser is targeted. Accordingly, the impact is carried out exclusively in the affected area, without spreading to healthy areas.
Spider veins removal using a neodymium laser is a relatively safe procedure. However, there is also a drawback - the procedure is not recommended to be carried out on the face. It is also worth noting that this laser is used to remove stars with a diameter not exceeding 2 mm. Dark skin is also a contraindication. It should be borne in mind that in most cases, with the help of laser radiation, only a secondary, aesthetic effect can be achieved. But the main effect - the treatment of pathology, is not observed.
The procedure requires a slight recovery period, during which you should not go out in the sun, you should not use cosmetics. It is not recommended to swim in hot water, steam in a sauna, steam bath, hot bath. Do not exercise. It should also be borne in mind that no cosmetic products should be applied to the face the day before the procedure. Better not even wash your face at this time. It is forbidden to use hydrogen peroxide. It is better to use products based on fat. Also, you cannot swim in open water bodies and pools for at least a month after the procedure.
The consequences are rare. Basically, they happen when the rules of hygiene and asepsis are not followed after the operation. Also, the cause of complications can be an incorrectly performed procedure. Major complications:
- hyperpigmentation (increased pigmentation, dark spots)
- erythema (redness, irritation)
- neovascularization (the formation of new asterisks).
Radio wave removal of spider veins
It is a method of removing spider veins using radio waves. It is used to treat large and small vascular dilations. In this case, a device such as Surgitron is used. It is used mainly for the removal of large venous disorders. It is also used to remove blood vessels on the face, but they must be large enough.
When using this technique, recovery occurs quickly enough, no blood is observed, the wound surface heals quickly. Patients note that the operation is completely painless. It is used to remove tanned and dark skin. A big plus is that the healthy parts of the vessel are not affected, but only the affected ones are treated. Additional measures are also taken to prevent infection.
The essence of the effect is that radio waves affect the dilated vessel, which leads to blockage of the vessel. Accordingly, a redistribution of blood flow occurs (blood goes into other vessels, and the mesh disappears). In order to reduce pain, special anesthetic ointments and pain relievers are used. There is no edema after the procedure. The average session duration is 1 hour. Scars practically do not appear.
ELOS therapy
A technology used primarily in cosmetology. During the procedure, a simultaneous effect on the dilated vessel with both light energy and high-frequency electric current is applied. Elos removal allows you to act not only on the epidermis, but also on deeper layers. The essence of the technique is that an Elos-impulse arises, which heats up the vessel. This leads to the fact that the protein components in the blood coagulate, coagulation occurs. The vessel is compressed, the walls are sealed and filled with connective tissue. The blood flow changes, over time the connective tissue is absorbed. [12], [13]
There are practically no complications. In rare cases, redness and slight swelling occur immediately after the procedure. This is mainly observed in the affected area, the pathology does not spread further. Usually, these swellings go away quickly enough (on average 2-3 hours). The number of procedures varies widely, on average 4-5 sessions are needed. There is 1 session per month. [14]
In order to consolidate the result, mesotherapy will be required.
Sclerotherapy of spider veins
The most common treatment for telangiectasias is sclerotherapy, which is a method or group of methods for destroying spider veins by injecting a drug that destroys the vein endothelium, resulting in occlusion and subsequent fibrosis.
Sclerotherapy, or sclerotherapy of spider veins, means injections that are placed directly into the venous bed. Sclerosant is used as an active ingredient. There is one drawback - there is swelling and redness in the injection area. But these side effects go away rather quickly.
Sclerosing agents are injected into the vein using hypodermic needles until the area around the puncture site turns pale or resistance is felt. In case of extravasation, the injection is stopped immediately. For individual injections, 0.1 ml to 0.5 ml of sclerosing agent is used for each telangiectasia area, although larger veins require larger volumes or sclerosing agent. [15] There are many sclerosing agents and they are usually referred to as detergents, osmotic or chemical irritants. These agents cause damage to the endothelium, which leads to blockage of the vein (vessel occlusion) and subsequent disappearance of the treated vessel. [16] Foam sclerotherapy mixes gas and liquid sclerosing agents between two syringes. [17] Foam with detergent sclerosants gives a more effective effect by increasing both the holding time and the contact area. This increase in efficacy also allows the use of lower doses of sclerosants. Foam is associated with side effects such as microthrombi, matting, and temporary visual impairment. [18] These side effects can also occur with conventional sclerotherapy.
Various methods are used to remove spider veins, including injections. The most famous injection-based methods are sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy and ozone therapy. Other injection methods are rarely used because they are ineffective and unsafe, have a number of complications and contraindications. Injections must be given in a medical institution, since it is necessary to strictly adhere to the injection scheme, as well as to comply with safety rules, special sterile conditions are required. Also, for such injections, special preparations are required, intended for use exclusively in a medical institution. Special equipment may be required.
Microsclerotherapy of spider veins
The procedure is a microinjection. They are done subcutaneously. There are practically no contraindications and side effects. In order to increase the effect of the procedure, an elastic bandage is applied to the place where the vessels are sealed. After about 2-3 months, it is possible to completely redirect the blood flow and achieve complete closure of the damaged vessel. The most effective microsclerotherapy of spider veins in the treatment of the vessels of the face, upper and lower extremities.
Electrocoagulation of spider veins
Electrocoagulation should be understood as the process of removing spider veins. At the same time, the peculiarity of the method is that it makes it possible to influence even the smallest vessels and their individual areas. The essence of the procedure is that electrodes are inserted directly into the vessel. They have a stimulating effect on the walls of blood vessels, as a result of which they coagulate and stick together. [19]
Accordingly, there is a change in blood flow. This method has a number of advantages, in particular, the absence of pain, a short rehabilitation period, and a minimum of side effects. One of the main disadvantages of the method is the high cost of this method. Also, the disadvantage is that after the procedure, you need to follow a certain regime, for example, give up the sauna, bath, solarium, and even ordinary tanning under the rays of the natural sun. It is also worth giving up shugaring or depilation. It is also worth excluding active physical activity. There are some contraindications, for example, the procedure cannot be carried out during pregnancy, during lactation, as well as with increased sensitization of the body and a tendency to allergic reactions.
Ozone therapy for spider veins
Quite a popular, effective and widespread procedure, the essence of which boils down to injections of oxygen and ozone. Injections are carried out directly into the affected vessel. Gradually, these substances spread through the vessels, up to the capillaries. This leads to the breakdown of active components and their inclusion in metabolism. Ozone therapy allows you to get rid of spider veins quickly and painlessly. Also, a great advantage is that the aesthetics and appearance of the skin do not suffer from the procedure. There are no scars, burns, hyperpigmentation after the procedure.
Radiofrequency coagulation of spider veins
It is a fairly effective technique in which no direct intervention in the human body occurs. Spider veins are coagulated using high-frequency exposure. For this, special equipment is used. With the help of high-frequency waves, the vessels are soldered.
This method undoubtedly has both its advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages include the fact that the method does not have pain, there is practically no discomfort or burning sensation. The recovery proceeds very quickly, without serious complications. Also, there are no violations of skin pigmentation. Also, the advantage of the method is that it does not require a person to be hospitalized. Immediately after the procedure, you can leave the hospital and go home, on vacation, or to work. There are also no significant restrictions. Only a gentle regimen is required - in the first few weeks, do not visit baths, saunas, do not sunbathe. [20]
Thermocoagulation of spider veins
With this method, vessels of rather small sizes can be removed. The principle of the method is that the skin is influenced with the help of special electrodes that emit heat. They are injected directly into the damaged vessel, after which they stick together under the influence of the thermal factor. Thermocoagulation of spider veins makes it possible to quickly, safely and painlessly get rid of the problem. [21]
Removal of spider veins with liquid nitrogen
This procedure means the use of ultra-low temperature liquid gas (liquefied nitrogen). The temperature of this gas reaches -280 degrees. In this case, as a result of touching the skin, a reaction occurs, which is accompanied by cauterization or complete burning of the treated areas. Removal with liquid nitrogen is often used, especially for the removal of spider veins. A quick, painless and effective procedure, relapses are rare.
Darsonval from spider veins
In the process of darsonvalization, the condition of microcapillaries, blood vessels is improved, as well as the appearance of the skin (stratum corneum, epidermis) is improved. During the procedure, a weak electric current is used, which passes through the skin and the vascular bed, and normalizes it. Micro discharges are used, which are enough to have a therapeutic effect, but not enough for a person to feel them. Therefore, the procedure is painless. Everyone who has done darvonsal from spider veins claims that the only thing that is felt during the procedure is the heat that spreads over the entire surface of the skin. It is also worth noting that the sensations for the majority are not just comfortable, but even pleasant.
The procedure affects not only the surface layer, but also the deep layers. Also, the procedure can be carried out on the scalp, with various pathological conditions, diseases, syndromes. The essence of the procedure is to burn out, blockage of damaged vessels. As a result, the pronounced mesh ceases to be noticeable. After the procedure, only a small spot remains. But it disappears pretty quickly. After the procedure, the skin is soft, soft and velvety.
A special apparatus is used, which includes the apparatus itself, a cord to it. Various attachments, lamp attachment, which allows for a precise impact. You also need to make sure that the kit includes instructions and a quality certificate. The procedure takes an average of 10-15 minutes, is carried out daily for 7-10 days (for the complete disappearance of the mesh). The duration of one procedure should not exceed 20 minutes.
Spider veins phototherapy
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is similar to laser therapy in that high intensity light sources emit polychromatic light in the 515 to 1200 nm wavelength range. Treatment of vascular lesions with IPL depends on the type and size of the vessels, with angiomas and spider veins showing the best response. [22] There are many clinical indications for the treatment of IPL. [23] IPL is indicated for the treatment of unwanted hair growth, vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, acne vulgaris, photodamage and skin rejuvenation. [24] The negative side effects of IPL include vesicles, burns, erosion, blistering and crusting, as well as hypo- and hyperpigmentation, and are common.
Phototherapy refers to a procedure to remove spider veins. The principle of the method consists in the effect of a flash on pronounced spider veins, which leads to their gradual removal. The healing properties of light are used. The procedure has a local effect. The advantage of the method is that light has a selective effect on the body, in particular, it acts exclusively on damaged tissues, while healthy ones remain intact. Damaged vessels are destroyed. Gradually, this place is filled with connective tissue, the skin acquires natural tones, and also gains flexibility, elasticity, firmness.
Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy refers to a method of influencing the vascular network, normalizing the condition of the skin and subcutaneous vessels. The essence of this method is the subcutaneous injection of substances under the skin. Also, in parallel, a mechanical effect on the skin is carried out. It is this complex impact that allows you to achieve the expected results. This method is applicable not only in cosmetology, phlebology and plastic surgery, but also in cardiology. Rheumatology, therapy, and other medical fields. For example, some heart diseases are accompanied by mandatory injections under the skin. [25]
- How to remove spider veins with a mesoscooter?
This procedure involves mechanical action on the skin. The impact is carried out on its superficial and deeper layers, as well as vessels, especially those that are localized directly under the skin. Light massage movements affect the skin, blood vessels, this increases the elasticity and firmness of blood vessels, trains superficial muscles. As a result, the spider veins are removed. At first glance, the method of exposure seems relatively simple, but without special medical training, and even more so at home, it is practically impossible to implement it without negative consequences for the body. Therefore, if you do not know how to remove spider veins using a mesoscooter, it is better to contact a specialized institution.
Microflebectomy
It is performed using hooks that allow you to extract the vein through minimal skin incisions or even punctures with a needle. Ambulatory microflebectomy is indicated for varicose veins in any part of the body, such as the arms, periorbital region, abdomen and back. [26]
Removing spider veins on the legs using alternative methods
As a rule, surgical methods of treatment are used only as a last resort, when traditional therapy is ineffective. But before proceeding with radical methods, it is worth trying to use folk to remove spider veins on the legs. Let's look at some recipes.
- Recipe number 1.
Ointment from cinquefoil and larkspur (in a ratio of 1: 1), used as a base, and extracts of blue cornflower flowers, hawthorn fruits, Baikal skullcap roots, is applied to biologically active points located in the neck, behind the ear, on the nasal septum... This ointment can be used instead of massage oil during cosmetic massage.

Removal of spider veins on the face
In some cases, various unconventional methods are used to remove spider veins on the face. They are usually effective in small areas of damage. And also allow to provide reliable prevention of the spread and progression of the disease. [27] It is recommended to use one of the ointments below.
- Recipe number 1.
To prepare the ointment, take butter as a base, melt it in a water bath, or over low heat until dissolved, with constant stirring. In the resulting mass add 2 tablespoons of concentrated extract of black cotoneaster, hazel leaves, immortelle herb, corn stigmas, oregano. All this is mixed until a homogeneous consistency is formed. Remove from heat, give the opportunity to freeze. Apply in a thin layer to the skin of the face. It is necessary to do this only after prior consultation with a doctor. Store in a refrigerator (on the bottom shelf).
- Recipe number 2.
Approximately 100 ml of corn oil is taken as a basis for the preparation of the ointment. A mixture of the following herbal components is prepared in advance in a refractory dish: Potentilla goose herb, celandine, walnut, scumpia, calamus (at the rate of about 2 tablespoons of each herb per 100 ml of oil). The oil is heated over low heat (not boiling). As soon as the oil has warmed up strongly enough, but has not yet boiled, remove it from the heat, and fill in the herbs prepared in advance. Stir, cover with a lid on top, insist in a dark place for a day (at room temperature). Wipe your face. Also used as a mask, which is applied to a clean face for 30-40 minutes. Wash off, lubricate with moisturizer.
- Recipe number 3.
A mixture of massage base oils is taken as a basis: wheat germ oil, grape seed oil in a 1: 1 ratio, add 2-3 drops of shea butter. Stir. 2 drops of the following essential oils are added to the resulting mixture: oil of Damascus rose, medicinal chamomile, cumanic and blackberry. Mix thoroughly, use as a lotion to wipe the face.
- Recipe number 4.
Vaseline or any other fatty base is taken as the basis for the preparation of massage oil. Heats up to a warm state. Better to use a water bath. 2 ml of concentrated extracts of the following plant components are poured into the resulting oil: ginger, valerian officinalis, chokeberry, meadow clover. Used to apply a thin layer to the face area. You can also add this remedy to the composition of medicinal baths over which the face is hovering.
- Recipe number 5.
Take about 50 ml of glycerin. 2 drops of essential oil of juniper are added to it, as well as 2 ml of extracts of mulberry root, persimmon juice, fennel ordinary, horsetail herb. If you have a severe cough, you can add 1 ml of castor oil. All this is mixed until smooth, used for application to the face area.
Contraindications to the procedure
Any removal of something is a surgical operation that requires surgical intervention, even with minimal damage. Therefore, there are certain contraindications to the removal of spider veins, as well as to any other operation. Basically, these requirements are standard for surgery. Operations are not performed in the presence of inflammatory and infectious diseases in the acute stage of any localization and genesis, at elevated temperature, pregnancy.
Diabetes mellitus, the presence of benign or malignant tumors are also contraindications. You should not carry out the operation if a person has skin diseases, with photodermatosis, various types of dermatitis, if there are scars. If a neoplasm has recently been removed on the skin, and a scar remains in this place, you should refrain from surgery. Some diseases of the nervous system and mental disorders in humans can also serve as a contraindication.
