In cosmetology and phlebology, various diseases associated with blood vessels are increasingly common: microcirculation disorders, varicose veins, formation of a network with clearly visible capillaries and quite pronounced bruises. The issue of medical intervention is becoming increasingly acute. A pressing issue today is the removal of spider veins.
Is it possible to remove spider veins?
Spider veins are not only a cosmetic problem, but also a very serious disease of internal organs. This is due to the fact that in addition to the unattractive appearance, disruption of the structure and external aesthetics of the skin, the development of corresponding diseases of internal organs occurs. The entire microcirculatory bed is also disrupted, pathologies of small and large vessels develop.
Telangiectasias or spider veins are dilated venules or arterioles (small superficial veins) less than 1.0 mm in diameter, occurring predominantly in the lower extremities.[ 1 ] Reticular veins are less than 3 mm in diameter, often tortuous, and located in the subcutaneous or subcutaneous tissue.[ 2 ] The cause is unknown. Patients may be asymptomatic or report pain, burning, or itching. Risk factors include family history, pregnancy, local trauma, and hormonal factors.[ 3 ]
Vascular damage is very dangerous, since blood circulation and vascular elasticity are always impaired. In turn, this entails impaired blood flow, decreased metabolic processes, impaired trophism (penetration of nutrients into tissues, tissue metabolism, removal of metabolic products). All this is also accompanied by impaired gas exchange, especially oxygen and carbon dioxide. As a result, hypoxia and hypercapnia develop. This significantly affects the condition of internal organs, especially those that are highly sensitive to oxygen and nutrients.
One of the most complex consequences of tissue metabolism disorders is the development of vegetative-vascular dystonia, neurocirculatory dystonia, and impaired vascular elasticity, which results in impaired vascular tone. The final stage of such complications may be cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, or stroke.
Thus, all of the above indicates that this pathology can and should be fought. Answering the question: "Is it possible to remove spider veins?", we get a clear answer: "Yes. Spider veins can be treated or removed using various methods.
Some of them look like externally too noticeable vessels that protrude through the skin, visible to the naked eye. Some of them look like growths on the skin surface. The features of the disease are determined by the localization of the inflammatory process. So, when localized in the face, head, the main consequence is the external unattractiveness of a person, microcirculation disorder, skin heat exchange disorder. If spider veins appear on the extremities, their trophism and innervation are disrupted. When spider veins appear on the legs, swelling and pain when walking may appear. Ultimately, intermittent claudication and atherosclerosis develop, which can lead to atherosclerosis, lameness, and disability.
The diagnosis of telangiectasias and reticular veins is clinical and is made according to the clinical, etiologic, anatomical, and pathophysiologic (CEAP) classification system of chronic venous diseases of the lower extremities. This CEAP classification system consists of seven main categories: C0 to C6, and telangiectasias are classified as C1.[ 4 ]
- C0 - no visible or perceptible signs of venous disease.
- C1 - telangiectasia or reticular veins (thread veins)
- C2 - varicose veins (diameter 3 mm or more)
- C3 - edema
- C4 - changes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue: pigmentation (C4a), eczema (C4a), lipodermatosclerosis (C4b) or atrophic blanche (C4b)
- C5 - healed venous ulcer
- C6 - active venous ulcer
The incidence of telangiectasias increases with age. [ 5 ] Telangiectasias of the lower extremities are very common and are found in 41% of women over 50 years of age. [ 6 ] They represent an important aesthetic or cosmetic problem. [ 7 ] The presence of telangiectasias may be associated with insufficiency of the main venous systems; approximately 50% to 62% of insufficiently perforating veins are found with telangiectasias.
Technique asterisk removal
Treatments for telangiectasias and reticular veins include sclerotherapy, laser therapy, intense pulsed light therapy, microphlebectomy, and thermocoagulation. These techniques can be used in combination to achieve maximum effect and avoid harm from individual techniques.
There are many methods used to remove spider veins. Traditional methods are tried first. With a comprehensive approach, it is possible to provide reliable prevention, prevent the progression of the disease, remove small and quantitative spider veins. Comprehensive therapy, as a rule, is represented by drug treatment, physiotherapy methods, folk, homeopathic, remedies, herbal medicine. Physical therapy, yoga, and various oriental health practices are mandatory. Correct breathing (pranayama, other breathing exercises) in combination with relaxation methods, meditative practices, and autogenic training are effective and mandatory means of restoring the condition of blood vessels and the body as a whole. It is important to normalize nutrition, adhere to the necessary diet, drink enough fluids, diversify the menu with fresh fruits and vegetables, and consume a sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals. This is the only way to achieve the expected results and return the blood vessels to their normal, natural state.
If the prescribed treatment is ineffective or at a severe stage of the pathology, multiple vascular pathologies, surgical methods are used, in which the spider veins are removed by surgery. A phlebologist, vascular or plastic surgeon, cosmetologist can help with this.
Spider Veins Removal Procedure
To remove them, you need to see a phlebologist or a cosmetologist (if the spider veins are localized in the facial area). There are a wide variety of methods, and the procedure for removing spider veins depends on which method is chosen. Each method has its own clearly defined methodology, which the doctor follows during the operation.
But in any case, all methods have several common stages. Thus, immediately before the procedure, an examination is carried out by a specialist. If necessary, additional tests can be taken. The presence or absence of contraindications is determined. If there are none, preparation is carried out.
Before starting the operation, the doctor begins preliminary skin treatment. The specifics of preparation are determined by the type of operation. But common to all types of operations are disinfection and creation of aseptic conditions. At this stage, the skin is treated with disinfectants and antiseptics. Other types of preparation are also used, depending on the type of operation. For example, during laser removal, the patient is given special protective glasses. Special masks and kerchiefs are also used during cryoprocedures.
After the preparation is done, the operation to remove the spider veins begins. Thus, the technique depends on which method is chosen. After the procedure, postoperative skin treatment is carried out. Special healing or restorative agents are applied, disinfected. Then additional treatment (restorative) can be prescribed, if necessary.
Laser removal of spider veins
The procedure is quite simple, however, it requires a highly qualified specialist. This is due to the fact that the procedure requires a serious approach, high precision and skill. Even the slightest mistake can lead to serious consequences.
The procedure lasts on average 15 minutes. Sometimes 1 procedure may be required, but in some cases several procedures may be required, especially if the area of damage is large enough and there are many vascular networks. But in most cases, one session is enough. The procedure for removing spider veins with a laser is painless, has no complications or side effects. In rare cases, in the first days after the procedure, slight redness in the treatment area, burning and itching may be observed. But such side effects do not last long. As a rule, serious complications are associated only with the human factor, and occur if the operation was performed by an inexperienced specialist.
Spider Vein Removal Device
To perform an operation to remove spider veins, a device is required. It is used both on an outpatient basis and in a hospital setting. There is a wide variety of devices, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most commonly used device is the Harmony XL Pro, which is a laser platform with special attachments. This is an innovative technique used all over the world. It is used by many clinics in Russia. The largest number of such devices are presented in Moscow clinics. The most common models are models 1064 and 540.
These devices have a number of advantages, in particular, the ability to remove even small defects. This applies not only to the removal of vascular pathologies, but other defects. The main process occurs due to photothermolysis of pigments. The device works extremely quickly, the duration of the procedure does not exceed 2-3 minutes. After the procedure, a stable effect is noted, and repeated procedures are rarely required. With the help of this device, you can combine various technologies, including laser and pulsed treatment technology. The laser beam has a high penetrating ability, and also allows you to treat large surfaces, including the face.
Another distinctive feature is that the device has a cooling effect, which significantly reduces pain. The device acts on the vessel safely, with minimal damage, since it has a point effect. This ensures high selectivity, which allows you to act on problem areas and not affect healthy tissue. It is also worth noting that the device activates collagen synthesis, respectively, rejuvenation of the body occurs. Suitable for all skin types and for different shades.
Removal of spider veins with neodymium laser
Laser therapy is used to treat telangiectasias in patients with veins smaller than 30 gauge. Patients with a fear of needles or an allergy to certain sclerosing agents may also benefit from this method. There are several types of lasers available for the treatment of telangiectasias, with wavelengths ranging from 532 nm to 1064 nm. [ 8 ] Treatment with a 1064 nm Nd: yag laser has shown results similar to sclerotherapy. [ 9 ] Side effects of laser therapy for the treatment of telangiectasias include erythema, crusting, swelling, and blistering. [ 10 ] Laser therapy may cause less pain, but may also result in complications such as bleeding. [ 11 ]
The essence of the procedure is that laser radiation penetrates the affected area, concentrates in the place where the dilated vessel is located. Under the influence of radiation, the dilated vessel is heated and sealed. Accordingly, the blood flow in this vessel stops, which leads to the disappearance of the spider veins. The advantage is that the laser acts in a targeted manner. Accordingly, the effect is carried out exclusively in the affected area, without spreading to healthy areas.
Removing spider veins using a neodymium laser is a relatively safe procedure. However, there is a drawback - the procedure is not recommended for the face. It is also worth noting that this laser is used to remove spider veins whose diameter does not exceed 2 mm. Dark skin is also a contraindication. It should be taken into account that in most cases, laser radiation can only achieve a secondary, aesthetic effect. But the main effect - treatment of pathology - is not observed.
The procedure requires a short recovery period, during which you should not go out in the sun, do not use cosmetics. It is not recommended to bathe in hot water, go to a sauna, bathhouse, or hot tub. Do not engage in physical activity. It is also important to remember that you should not apply any cosmetics to your face the day before the procedure. It is better not to even wash your face during this time. It is forbidden to use hydrogen peroxide. It is better to use fat-based products. You also cannot swim in open water or pools for at least a month after the procedure.
Consequences are rare. They mainly occur when hygiene and asepsis rules are not followed after surgery. Complications can also be caused by an incorrectly performed procedure. The main complications are:
- hyperpigmentation (increased pigmentation, dark spots)
- erythema (redness, irritation)
- neovascularization (formation of new stars).
Radio wave removal of spider veins
It is a method of removing spider veins using radio wave radiation. It is used to treat large and small vascular dilatations. In this case, a device such as Surgitron is used. It is used mainly to remove large venous disorders. It is also used to remove vessels on the face, but they must be large enough.
When using this method, recovery occurs quite quickly, there is no blood, the wound surface heals quickly. Patients note that the operation is completely painless. It is used to remove tanned and dark skin. A big plus is that healthy areas of the vessel are not affected, and only the affected ones are treated. Additional measures are also used to prevent infection.
The essence of the effect is that radio waves affect the dilated vessel, which leads to blocking of the vessel. Accordingly, there is a redistribution of blood flow (blood goes to other vessels, and the mesh disappears). In order to reduce pain, special ointments with anesthetic, painkillers are used. There is no swelling after the procedure. The duration of the session is on average 1 hour. Scars practically do not appear.
ELOS therapy
A technology used primarily in cosmetology. During the procedure, both light energy and high-frequency electric current are simultaneously applied to the dilated vessel. Elos removal allows you to affect not only the epidermis, but also deeper layers. The essence of the technique is that an elos impulse occurs, which warms the vessel. This leads to the protein components in the blood coagulating, coagulation occurs. The vessel contracts, the walls are sealed and filled with connective tissue. Blood flow changes, and over time, the connective tissue dissolves. [ 12 ], [ 13 ]
There are practically no complications. In rare cases, redness and slight swelling occur immediately after the procedure. This is mainly observed in the area of impact, the pathology does not spread further. Usually, these swellings pass quite quickly (on average, 2-3 hours). The number of procedures varies widely, on average, 4-5 sessions are needed. One session is performed per month. [ 14 ]
To consolidate the result, mesotherapy will be required.
Sclerotherapy of spider veins
The most common treatment for telangiectasias is sclerotherapy, which is a method or group of methods of destroying spider veins by injecting a drug that destroys the endothelium of the vein, leading to occlusion and subsequent fibrosis.
Sclerotherapy, or sclerotherapy of spider veins, involves injections that are administered directly into the venous bed. The active ingredient used is a sclerosant. There is one drawback - swelling and redness occur in the injection area. But these side effects pass fairly quickly.
Sclerosing agents are injected into the vein using hypodermic needles until the area around the puncture site turns white or resistance is felt. If extravasation occurs, the injection is stopped immediately. For individual injections, 0.1 ml to 0.5 ml of sclerosing agent is used for each area of telangiectasia, although larger veins require larger volumes or sclerosing agent.[ 15 ] There are many sclerosing agents and they are generally classified as detergents, osmotic irritants, or chemical irritants. These agents cause endothelial damage, leading to blockage of the vein (vascular occlusion) and subsequent disappearance of the treated vessel.[ 16 ] Foam sclerotherapy mixes gas and liquid sclerosing agents between two syringes. [ 17 ] Foam with detergent sclerosants provides a more effective effect by increasing both the dwell time and the contact area. This increase in effectiveness also allows the use of lower doses of sclerosants. Foam is associated with side effects such as microthrombi, matting, and temporary visual impairment. [ 18 ] These side effects may also occur with conventional sclerotherapy.
Various methods are used to remove spider veins, including injections. The most well-known methods based on injections are sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy and ozone therapy. Other injection methods are rarely used, as they are ineffective and unsafe, have a number of complications and contraindications. Injections must be done in a medical facility, since it is necessary to strictly follow the injection schedule, as well as safety regulations, and require special sterile conditions. Also, such injections require special preparations intended for use exclusively in a medical facility. Special equipment may be required.
Microsclerotherapy of spider veins
The procedure involves microinjections. They are done subcutaneously. There are practically no contraindications or side effects. In order to increase the effect of the procedure, an elastic bandage is applied to the place where the vessels are sealed. In about 2-3 months, it is possible to completely redirect the blood flow and achieve complete closure of the damaged vessel. Microsclerotherapy of spider veins is most effective in treating vessels of the face, upper and lower extremities.
Electrocoagulation of spider veins
Electrocoagulation refers to the process of removing spider veins. The peculiarity of the method is that it makes it possible to influence even the smallest vessels and their individual sections. The essence of the procedure is that electrodes are inserted directly into the vessel. They have a stimulating effect on the vessel walls, causing them to coagulate and stick together. [ 19 ]
Accordingly, there is a change in blood flow. This method has a number of advantages, in particular, the absence of pain, a short rehabilitation period, and a minimum of side effects. One of the main disadvantages of the method is the high cost of this method. Another disadvantage is that after the procedure you need to follow a certain regimen, for example, refuse a sauna, bath, solarium, and even regular tanning under the rays of the natural sun. You should also refuse sugaring or depilation. You should also exclude active physical activity. There are some contraindications, for example, the procedure cannot be carried out during pregnancy, during lactation, as well as with increased sensitization of the body and a tendency to allergic reactions.
Ozone therapy for spider veins
Quite a popular, effective and widespread procedure, the essence of which comes down to the injection of oxygen and ozone. Injections are administered directly into the affected vessel. Gradually, these substances spread through the vessels, right up to the capillaries. This leads to the breakdown of active components and their inclusion in metabolism. Ozone therapy allows you to get rid of spider veins quickly and painlessly. Another big advantage is that the procedure does not affect the aesthetics or appearance of the skin. There are no scars, burns, or hyperpigmentation after the procedure.
Radiofrequency coagulation of spider veins
It is a rather effective method, in which there is no direct intervention in the human body. Coagulation of spider veins is carried out using high-frequency exposure. Special equipment is used for this. With the help of high-frequency waves, the vessels are welded.
This method certainly has its advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages include the fact that the method is painless, there is practically no discomfort or burning. Recovery is very fast, without serious complications. There are also no skin pigmentation disorders. Another advantage of the method is that it does not require mandatory hospitalization of a person. Immediately after the procedure, you can leave the medical institution and go home, to rest, or to work. There are also no significant restrictions. Only a gentle regime is required - do not visit baths, saunas, do not sunbathe in the first few weeks. [ 20 ]
Thermocoagulation of spider veins
This method can be used to remove vessels of fairly small sizes. The principle of the method is that the skin is affected by special electrodes that emit heat. They are inserted directly into the damaged vessel, after which they stick together under the influence of the thermal factor. Thermocoagulation of spider veins makes it possible to quickly, safely and painlessly get rid of the problem. [ 21 ]
Removal of spider veins with liquid nitrogen
This procedure involves the use of ultra-low temperature liquid gas (liquefied nitrogen). The temperature of this gas reaches -280 degrees. In this case, as a result of touching the skin, a reaction occurs, which is accompanied by cauterization or complete burning of the treated areas. Liquid nitrogen removal is often used, especially for the removal of spider veins. A quick, painless and effective procedure, relapses are rare.
Darsonval for spider veins
During darsonvalization, the condition of microcapillaries and blood vessels is improved, and the appearance of the skin (stratum corneum, epidermis) is improved. During the procedure, a weak electric current is used, which passes through the skin and vascular bed, normalizing it. Microdischarges are used, which are sufficient to provide a therapeutic effect, but not enough for a person to feel them. Therefore, the procedure is painless. Everyone who has done darsonsal for spider veins claims that the only thing felt during the procedure is the warmth that spreads over the entire surface of the skin. It is also worth noting that the sensations for most are not just comfortable, but even pleasant.
The procedure affects not only the surface layer, but also the deep layers. The procedure can also be performed on the scalp, in various pathological conditions, diseases, syndromes. The essence of the procedure is burning, blocking damaged vessels. As a result, the pronounced mesh ceases to be noticeable. After the procedure, only a small spot remains. But it disappears quite quickly. After the procedure, the skin is soft, tender and velvety.
A special device is used, which includes the device itself, a cord for it. Various attachments, a lamp attachment that allows for precise action. You also need to make sure that the kit includes instructions and a quality certificate. The procedure takes an average of 10-15 minutes, is carried out daily for 7-10 days (for the mesh to completely disappear). The duration of one procedure should not exceed 20 minutes.
Phototherapy for spider veins
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is similar to laser therapy in that high-intensity light sources emit polychromatic light in the wavelength range of 515 to 1200 nm. Treatment of vascular lesions with IPL depends on the type and size of the vessels, with angiomas and spider veins showing the best response.[ 22 ] There are many clinical indications for IPL treatment.[ 23 ] IPL is indicated for the treatment of unwanted hair growth, vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, acne vulgaris, photodamage, and skin rejuvenation.[ 24 ] Negative side effects of IPL include vesicles, burning, erosions, blisters, and crusting, as well as hypo- and hyperpigmentation, and are common.
Phototherapy is a procedure aimed at removing spider veins. The principle of the method is to use a photo flash on pronounced spider veins, which leads to their gradual removal. The healing properties of light are used. The procedure has a local effect. The advantage of the method is that light has a selective effect on the body, in particular, it affects only damaged tissues, while healthy ones remain untouched. Damaged vessels are destroyed. Gradually, this place is filled with connective tissue, the skin acquires natural tones, and also gains flexibility, elasticity, and firmness.
Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is a method of influencing the vascular network, normalizing the condition of the skin and subcutaneous vessels. The essence of this method is the subcutaneous injection of substances under the skin. Also, mechanical action on the skin is carried out in parallel. It is this complex action that allows you to achieve the expected results. This method is applicable not only in cosmetology, phlebology and plastic surgery, but also in cardiology. Rheumatology, therapy, and other medical fields. For example, some heart diseases are accompanied by mandatory injections under the skin. [ 25 ]
- How to remove spider veins with a mesoroller?
This procedure involves mechanical action on the skin. The action is carried out on its superficial and deeper layers, as well as vessels, especially those that are localized directly under the skin. Light massage movements are used to affect the skin and vessels, this increases the elasticity and firmness of the vessels, trains the superficial muscles. As a result, spider veins are removed. At first glance, the method of action seems relatively simple, but without special medical training, and especially at home, it is almost impossible to carry it out without negative consequences for the body. Therefore, if you do not know how to remove spider veins with a mesoroller, it is better to contact a specialized institution.
Microphlebectomy
It is performed using hooks that allow the vein to be extracted through minimal skin incisions or even needle punctures. Ambulatory microphlebectomy is indicated for varicose veins in any part of the body, such as the arms, periorbital area, abdomen, and back. [ 26 ]
Removing spider veins on legs using folk methods
As a rule, surgical methods of treatment are used only as a last resort, when traditional therapy is ineffective. But before resorting to radical methods, it is worth trying folk remedies to remove spider veins on the legs. Let's consider some recipes.

Removal of spider veins on the face
In some cases, various non-traditional methods are used to remove spider veins on the face. They are usually effective for small affected areas. They also provide reliable prevention of the spread and progression of the disease. [ 27 ] It is recommended to use one of the ointments presented below.
- Recipe No. 1.
To prepare the ointment, take butter as a base, melt it in a water bath or over low heat until dissolved, stirring constantly. Add 2 tablespoons of concentrated extract of black chokeberry, hazel leaves, immortelle, corn silk, and oregano to the resulting mass. Mix everything until a uniform consistency is formed. Remove from heat and allow to harden. Apply a thin layer to the skin of the face. This should only be done after prior consultation with a doctor. Store in the refrigerator (on the bottom shelf).
- Recipe No. 2.
To prepare the ointment, take about 100 ml of corn oil. Prepare a mixture of the following plant components in advance in a fireproof dish: silverweed, celandine, walnut, smoke tree, calamus (at a rate of about 2 tablespoons of each herb per 100 ml of oil). Heat the oil over low heat (without bringing it to a boil). As soon as the oil has warmed up enough, but has not yet boiled, remove it from the heat and pour in the previously prepared herbs. Stir, cover with a lid on top, and leave in a dark place for 24 hours (at room temperature). Wipe the face. Also use as a mask, which is applied to a clean face for 30-40 minutes. Wash off, lubricate with a moisturizer.
- Recipe No. 3.

- Recipe No. 4.
Vaseline or any other fatty base is used as a base for preparing massage oil. Heat it up to a warm state. It is better to use a water bath. 2 ml of concentrated extracts of the following plant components are poured into the resulting oil: ginger, medicinal valerian, black chokeberry, red clover. Use for application to the face area in a thin layer. You can also add this product to the composition of medicinal baths over which the face is steamed.
- Recipe No. 5.
Take about 50 ml of glycerin. Add 2 drops of juniper essential oil, as well as 2 ml of mulberry root extract, persimmon juice, common fennel, and horsetail herb. For severe cough, you can add 1 ml of castor oil. Mix everything until smooth and apply to the face.
Contraindications to the procedure
Any removal of anything is a surgical operation that requires prompt intervention, even with minimal damage. Therefore, there are also certain contraindications to the removal of spider veins, as well as to any other operation. Basically, these requirements are standard for surgery. Operations are not performed in the presence of inflammatory and infectious diseases in the acute stage of any localization and genesis, at elevated temperature, pregnancy.
Contraindications include diabetes mellitus, benign or malignant tumors. The operation should not be performed if a person has skin diseases, photodermatosis, various types of dermatitis, or scars. If a neoplasm has recently been removed from the skin and a scar remains in that place, the operation should be avoided. Contraindications may also include certain diseases of the nervous system and mental disorders in humans.
