As a rule, for mucous discharge from the nose, drops or sprays are most often prescribed that act directly on the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity.
Such drugs have a vasoconstrictor, decongestant and antiallergic effect. However, there are also pills for a runny nose that eliminate not only the symptoms, but also the cause of the disease: for example, ARVI or allergies. These drugs are defined in a separate group, which we will consider.
Indications for the use of tablets for a runny nose
Pills for a runny nose can be different, both in composition and in the direction of action. However, all of them are designed to eliminate pathological mucus secretion from the nose, which can be caused by allergies, microbial or viral infections, etc.
The most common cause of a runny nose is considered to be a viral disease. At the same time, nasal discharge is a normal reaction of the body to a viral invasion, because its task during ARVI is to prevent the pathogen from entering and quickly remove it, in this case, with mucous secretions.
In case of allergic rhinitis, mucus secretion is a protective reaction of the body to dust or pollen particles, medications, odors, wool, etc. To relieve swelling of the nasal mucosa in such a case, antihistamine tablets are prescribed.
A runny nose of microbial etiology is most often a consequence of a viral disease, when bacterial flora joins the inflammatory process. In this case, a separate pathology develops, called nasopharyngitis.
In the advanced stage, a more complex and protracted disease can develop - sinusitis. For its treatment, pills for a runny nose are also used, but in most cases, inflammation of the nasal sinuses requires complex and more complex treatment.
Names of pills for a runny nose
Pills for a runny nose may vary: they are prescribed depending on the cause of the mucous discharge. Doctors identify a number of medications that can be effective in treating a runny nose:
- antiallergic drugs;
- anti-inflammatory drugs;
- antibiotics;
- antivirus products;
- homeopathy.
In addition, to speed up recovery, multivitamin complexes and tablets to stimulate the body's defenses may be prescribed.

Homeopathic tablets for runny nose
Homeopathic tablets are very popular in the treatment of runny nose, which accompanies acute respiratory viral infections and colds. Most doctors welcome the use of homeopathy, but only in combination with standard drug treatment. This is especially true for chronic or neglected runny noses.
In addition to the homeopathic medicines we mentioned above (Cinnabsin and Coryzalia), the following medications will help speed up the treatment:
- Allium Cepa is a preparation based on onions;
- Nux Vomica is a remedy based on chilibuha, a toxic component containing the alkaloids strychnine and brucine;
- Euphrasia is a preparation based on eyebright;
- Arsenicum is anhydrous arsenous acid used for medicinal purposes;
- Aconitum is a remedy that contains Aconite;
- Rumex is a multivitamin, general tonic preparation based on curly (forage) sorrel;
- Mercurius is a mercury-based product;
- Gelzemin is a preparation made from the rhizome of yellow (wild) jasmine.
When choosing homeopathic tablets, it is necessary to take into account possible contraindications and side effects.
Cold tablets for children
The use of tablets for a runny nose for treating children is not welcomed by domestic pediatricians. Many tablet drugs have restrictions for prescribing in pediatrics. As a rule, the child is offered nasal drops and syrups for oral administration.
At the initial stage, the use of the following tablets is allowed:
- Anaferon is a homeopathic antiviral and immunomodulatory agent;
- Arbidol is an antiviral drug that is used in children from 3 years of age;
- Remantadine is an antiviral drug that is used in children from 7 years of age.
For allergic rhinitis, the following remedies are suitable for a baby:
- Zyrtec is an antihistamine drug approved for use in children aged 6 months and older;
- Astemizole - tablets for allergic rhinitis, which can be used by children from 6 years of age (for children under 6 years of age, Astemizole is prescribed in the form of a suspension);
- Claritin is an antiallergic drug that can be prescribed to children from 2 years of age.
Please note: Before giving any medication to a child, it is essential to consult with a pediatrician.
Tablets for allergic rhinitis
In mild forms of allergies, a runny nose can be successfully treated with antihistamines:
- Cetrin is indicated for the complex treatment of seasonal and chronic rhinitis;
- Loratadine - used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis;
- Claritin is effective in treating seasonal rhinitis;
- Erius – prescribed for allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
But if the disease is chronic, the doctor may prescribe corticosteroid drugs:
- Hydrocortisone is a drug that inhibits the production of essential biological substances that provoke the development of allergies;
- Prednisolone - used mainly in emergency cases;
- Dexamethasone - used in the form of nasal mucosal irrigation.
The use of corticosteroids is permitted only after they have been prescribed by a doctor. Self-medication with such drugs is fraught with extremely negative consequences.
Antibiotics for a runny nose in tablets
Antibiotics for a runny nose can only be used if the disease has become chronic or complications have appeared in the form of inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
Antibiotics help in the presence of an inflammatory process caused by bacterial flora. Most often, a runny nose is the result of a viral disease or an allergic reaction. In such cases, taking antibiotics is, at the very least, inappropriate.
When choosing an antibacterial drug, it is advisable to take a special test - an antibiogram. The results of such a study will show which drug the microorganisms that caused the disease are sensitive to. In this case, the treatment will be guaranteed to be effective.
Inexpensive pills for a runny nose
If the patient has contraindications to the use of drops or spray for a runny nose, then you can try to cure the disease with oral medications. Tablets for a runny nose and colds cause, albeit temporary, but still relief of symptoms. Usually, the effect of one tablet lasts up to 6 hours.
- Flucold;
- Gripout;
- Gripgo;
- Gripex;
- Effect.
The listed products are combined anti-cold medications. Their main effect is to relieve swelling of the nasal mucosa, lower the temperature, eliminate headaches and muscle pain, and ease breathing and general condition.

How to cure a runny nose without pills?
At the initial stage of a runny nose, you can try to do without pills and any other medications. Traditional methods of treatment will help with this:
- nasal inhalations with pine needle infusion;
- warming the bridge of the nose with a warm bag of salt;
- steaming feet in hot water with the addition of dry mustard;
- putting a few drops of menthol or eucalyptus oil into the nose;
- instillation of fresh aloe or Kalanchoe juice;
- inhaling the smell of onions or garlic;
- rinsing the nasal passages with saline or sea salt solution.
It is important to remember that treatment of a runny nose using folk remedies can only be carried out at the very beginning of the disease, and only in the absence of complications.
If folk remedies do not help within 2 or 3 days, then you need to see a doctor who will prescribe the necessary medications and pills for a runny nose.
