It is quite difficult to diagnose pain in the left kidney, since it can easily be confused with pain arising in the large intestine or spleen located on the left side of the body.
Kidney perform a very important and necessary function in the human body - the formation of urine. This process occurs in three stages: first, the kidneys work in the filtration mode, then the reabsorption queue occurs, and finally, the urine formation procedure is completed by secretion. If any diseases occur, the activity of these most important organs is disturbed, as a result of which a person experiences pain in the kidneys.
Causes of the pain in the left kidney
Pain in the left kidney may result from chronic inflammatory diseases, for example:
- pyelonephritis (inflammation of the renal pelvis). The disease is characterized by a small, pressing pain that occurs in the left or right side. Often pain can be felt on both sides of the body;
- cancer of the left kidney is a rather serious, polietiologic disease that develops due to chemical, hormonal, radiation, immunological, hereditary and other effects and provokes pain in the left kidney. A cancerous tumor of the kidney may be malignant and benign in nature, be primary or secondary, that is, be independent or spread to the kidney from the diseased organ next to it;
- nephroptosis (omission) of the left kidney - excessive mobility of the organ. Normally, the border of the mobility of the kidney is equal to a couple of centimeters. But it happens that the patient drastically loses weight (usually these are young girls aspiring to a slim figure) and the body does not have time to “get into place”, hence the nephroptosis. It is easy to diagnose this unpleasant moment; it is enough just to consult a doctor who can give an opinion only by looking at the patient (usually people diagnosed with nephroptosis have a pale complexion and are distinguished by excessive thinness). To confirm the presence of the disease is carried out ultrasound diagnostics, tomography and urography;
- urolithiasis is another reason due to which pain develops in the left kidney. The disease can occur in a person of absolutely any age and is the formation of stones in the organs of the urinary tract, including the kidneys. Stone formation occurs due to improper metabolism in the body. The development of the disease has the climatic conditions in which a person lives; vitamin deficiency; bone diseases, injuries; lack of ultraviolet rays; geographical factor; diseases of the genitourinary system and kidneys, in particular; powerful dehydration; chronic diseases of the intestine and stomach;
- adenoma and fibroma related to benign tumors of the left kidney;
- left kidney hydronephrosis - a disease that occurs at a time when the permeability of the pelvic-ureteric segment is impaired. Urine is poorly out of the renal pelvis due to the expansion of its abdominal system.
Symptoms of the pain in the left kidney
The main symptoms of inflammatory processes that cause pain in the left kidney are:
- pain in the lower back, lower abdomen, or left side;
- nausea, vomiting;
- soreness when touched;

Treatment of the pain in the left kidney
Pain in the left kidney can also occur due to diseases of the kidneys themselves. This is evidenced by symptoms such as a burning sensation when the bladder is empty, muddy or urine with blood, sand in the urine, decrease in the volume of daily urine, back pain, kidney, etc. It is urgent to consult a urologist!
