Diaper rash is an inflammatory process that occurs in areas of the skin that are subject to prolonged friction and exposure to moisture over a long period of time.
This inflammation occurs due to the fact that with prolonged moisturizing and irritating action of the skin secretory function with sweating and sebum secretion, fungal microorganisms multiply in the folds of the skin. Intertrigo can also appear as a result of friction of contacting skin surfaces. The localization sites of this inflammatory process, as a rule, are the inguinal-femoral folds, and the folds between the buttocks, between the fingers, in the area of the hollows in the armpits, under the breasts in women. In addition, intertrigo can occur with excess body weight in the folds of the neck and abdomen.
Children are mainly susceptible to the formation of diaper rash, but it can also be observed in adults. It appears mainly during the summer heat, as a result of prolonged walking, in those who do not observe the rules of personal hygiene, in people with a tendency to obesity and excessive sweating, etc. In children, this inflammation can be caused by insufficient drying of the skin after bathing, it appears in children with a weight significantly exceeding age norms, with insufficient care, etc.
Diaper rash can be treated relatively easily in most cases, if you do not let the disease progress to the point where ulcers and eczema begin to appear on the skin. As a result of timely medical attention, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate treatment, which will result in effective relief from this disease.
Causes of diaper rash
The causes of diaper rash are characterized by a number of factors that influence the development of this disease. These include, first of all, increased sweating. It can occur as a result of local or general overheating of the skin surfaces of the body, in particular, when there is insufficient air flow and ventilation for a long time. Increased sweating is also noted during fever and other diseases. Sweat and other secretions of a seriously ill person contain a large number of metabolic products that act as a strong irritant to the skin.
One of the factors that provokes the occurrence of diaper rash is the aggressive action of urine during incontinence; discharge from hemorrhoids and fistulas also has an irritating effect on the skin.
Not the least important role among the reasons that can cause diaper rash is also played by the individual characteristics of the body of each specific person. Thus, with a tendency to increased sweating and dysfunction of the sebaceous glands of the skin (mainly with obesity), this increases the likelihood of developing this inflammatory process.
In addition, diaper rash can be one of the types of specific allergic reactions to the use of soap or any other body care products, and can also occur as an allergy due to the consumption of certain foods.
Often, diaper rash appears as a result of skin friction against clothing. In this regard, the most unfavorable are clothes made of synthetic fabrics, and for small children, the use of disposable diapers can be dangerous in this regard.
As a result of the effect of excess moisture on sensitive baby skin, the amount of protective lubricant on the baby's skin is significantly reduced, which weakens the protective function and opens free access for the penetration of all kinds of harmful microorganisms. In addition, in the process of urine breakdown, ammonia is formed, which has a negative effect on the skin.
Although the causes of diaper rash can be very diverse, however, regardless of what exactly caused its appearance, it is necessary to remember that such an inflammatory process is characterized by a high rate of development, and the formation of an extensive area of damage often occurs in just a few hours. Therefore, in order to minimize the possible undesirable consequences of the disease, it is necessary to immediately take the necessary measures as soon as possible.
Symptoms of Diaper Rash
Symptoms of diaper rash are expressed in the appearance of erythema - redness, the area of which is symmetrical on both sides of the natural skin fold. The affected areas of the skin are characterized by increased moisture. If appropriate treatment is not started, further progression of the disease is characterized by the appearance of superficial cracks in the skin fold. Through these cracks, it becomes possible for pathogenic microorganisms to penetrate the skin. When diaper rash as a result of this passes into a more serious or neglected form, bleeding ulcers are noted, which are covered with a black or brown coating that has a putrid smell.
An accompanying symptom of the disease is a burning sensation, often pain. If a pustular infection joins in, pustules form at the edges of the weeping area. In this case, diaper rash is called infectious and acquires the character of a chronic disease, the course of which can stretch out for many years.
In children, when diaper rash is localized in the gluteal region, feces and urine, producing a strong irritating effect on the affected areas of the skin during urination and defecation, respectively, this causes constant tearfulness of the baby during these processes. If this disease is present for a long period of time, the child may experience weight loss.
The detection of any of the above negative phenomena indicates that symptoms of diaper rash are present, and this requires immediate contact with a medical specialist who will prescribe appropriate treatment.
Weeping diaper rash
Weeping diaper rash is one of the most common cases of skin inflammation, accompanied by the appearance of weeping lesions of the skin in places where natural folds are formed on the human body. Children are mainly susceptible to diaper rash. This process can be provoked by an allergy that has developed in a child, such as, for example, diathesis. But mainly diaper rash with the formation of weeping wounds occurs due to the adverse prolonged effect of excess moisture on the skin, and in addition, as a result of friction of skin surfaces. The combination of these two factors causes a significant decrease in the layer of protective natural lubrication on the skin, which allows pathogens to easily penetrate the skin. As a result, an inflammatory process develops, characterized at first by the appearance of damage to the skin in the form of cracks and ulcers. Liquid subsequently begins to be released from them, such weeping wounds often cause severe itching and quite intense pain.
If such skin lesions with the presence of weeping are not treated, they tend to expand the area where the weeping diaper rash appears, which can lead to the child becoming restless, constantly crying and sleeping poorly. And in adults, this problem causes severe discomfort and self-doubt, since such weeping can cause wet spots on clothes with an unpleasant odor. You can avoid the fact that the diaper rash reaches the stage at which a large amount of liquid is released from the wounds in the places of its localization, and therefore begins to affect the quality of life, if you seek medical help in a timely manner.
Diaper rash in diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that negatively affects the entire human body over a long period of its course. In addition to the development of all sorts of adverse effects affecting the state of the blood, requiring constant monitoring of sugar content in it, damage to the organs of vision, negative impact on the functioning of the kidneys, the work of the cardiovascular system, changes also occur in the condition of the skin. The skin of a diabetic with the disease in an insulin-independent form - diabetes type 2 - becomes rough, flaky, its turgor is significantly reduced. An accompanying side effect of diabetes is the occurrence of increased sweating and impaired thermoregulation of the skin. This mainly applies to those places on the human body where natural skin folds are formed. Against this background, diaper rash with diabetes is a fairly common phenomenon.
Diabetes and diaper rash are interrelated, which is expressed in the following. Due to disorders in the regulation of sugar in the patient's blood, eczematous reactions and urticaria appear, which are prerequisites for the development of diaper rash.
Diabetic diaper rash is a problem that requires the same close attention as all other negative changes in the body's condition that accompany this disease, affecting various organs and systems. Since the body is weakened by the resistance to this serious disease, with a reduced protective barrier function and ability to recover, it is very vulnerable to the possibility of developing all sorts of complications.
Streptococcal diaper rash
Streptococcal diaper rash is an inflammation of the skin caused by streptococcal bacteria. The prerequisites for the emergence of an optimal environment in which these pathogenic microorganisms multiply intensively are characterized by the skin's tendency to excessive sweating, abnormally high activity of the sebaceous glands, and failure to observe basic hygiene rules to a sufficient extent. This type of diaper rash can also be caused by factors associated with such individual characteristics of a person as being overweight or having diabetes.
This type of diaper rash is usually localized in areas of contact between the surfaces of the skin folds between the thigh and scrotum in men, in the area between the buttocks, in the armpits, under the breasts in women, behind the ears, and also in the folds of the abdomen in obesity.
With this disease, the skin acquires a bright pink hue, its affected areas have a clear border with the surrounding healthy skin. The area of diaper rash is completely eroded and has a wet surface. In the skin folds, painful cracks that bleed are sometimes observed.
Thus, streptococcal diaper rash develops as a result of the pathogenic action of streptococci in the folds of the skin on the human body and is a rather unpleasant inflammatory process with the formation of oozing. At the same time, it can be treated with lotions with a disinfectant solution, as well as with the use of all sorts of special ointments and pastes.
Fungal diaper rash
There are frequent cases when the cause of inflammation on the skin is a fungal infection. The most frequent "guests" penetrating the skin and triggering the pathogenic process are Candida and Pityrosporum. Due to their pathogenic action, such an unpleasant phenomenon as fungal diaper rash occurs. Children who have a predisposition to various types of allergies are most at risk of developing fungal diaper rash. But there is also a directly opposite possibility. The appearance of diaper rash under certain circumstances can signal the onset of an allergic reaction.
After a fungal infection has occurred, reddish spots of a round or oval shape appear on the skin. Such areas have borders similar to a fringe. Due to the fact that the fungus is supplemented with other microfungi, signs of damage can be visualized as white pustules.
It is important to take into account that reddening of the skin should not always be unambiguously assessed as inflammation. If the baby has light skin and the vessels under it are located very close to the surface, then the pattern of the vessels may show through. This is mainly noted on the arms and legs of the baby. The same applies to infants who are overweight due to metabolic and endocrine disorders.
It is very important to stop fungal diaper rash at the beginning of the development of this inflammatory process or, if possible, at the earliest stage, since if the pathogenic progress is left to its own devices, it is fraught with the involvement of large areas of skin in the affected area and all sorts of complications.
Diaper rash under cast
In case of injuries to limbs or joints, one of the most important conditions for healing is the need to first give the required position, ensure their complete immobility, and perform immobilization. Sometimes the need for immobilization arises in the postoperative period.
The most common material used for fixation is plaster. The advantages of its use are beyond doubt. This includes many years of practice of its effective use, low cost, ease of use, little time required to create a fixing bandage, no need for any special devices.
However, very often, when immobilized in this way, patients encounter such a problem as diaper rash under the plaster. Before applying a plaster splint, the limb is wrapped in cotton wool, which after some time fills with moisture from sweating under the air-impermeable plaster layer. This causes an unpleasant odor. But the most important thing is that the presence of plaster prevents hygiene procedures. The skin overheats, active sweating of the limb occurs, which creates an ideal environment for the reproduction of pathogenic microbes and, as a result, the appearance of diaper rash.
In order to prevent the development of such an unfavorable concomitant phenomenon, hygienic measures should look like this. The skin under the plaster should be treated using a cotton swab, which is inserted under the plaster for wiping with all sorts of solutions and applying creams for skin care.
Diaper rash under a plaster cast can also be avoided if you use the latest materials for applying an immobilizing splint. Many of them, unlike plaster, are lightweight and water-resistant, do not crumble, and provide a better opportunity for air circulation under the fixing bandage.
What does diaper rash look like?
By what signs regarding how diaper rash looks, in addition to the list of symptoms inherent to it, it becomes possible to determine that we are dealing with this disease? Diaper rash is largely characterized by an appearance that varies depending on the stage at which the disease is.
At the beginning of development and with a mild degree of diaper rash, it is characterized by redness in places where the skin forms natural folds. In the absence or limited flow of air to the skin, its covers become damp, which can provoke the appearance of inflammation, due to which red spots appear. Under the influence of irritating factors, a small rash may appear on the inflamed reddened areas.
In the absence of necessary medical measures at the first stage, diaper rash acquires a higher - medium severity category. At the same time, against the background of reddening of the affected areas, microcracks and manifestations of erosion are visualized.
With further changes in the skin condition, if treatment is not started, diaper rash takes the form of pustular ulcers, from which the upper fragments of the skin peel off. As the disease progresses negatively, weeping occurs in these wounds, which causes infection.
Of course, it is better not to go so far as to find out from personal experience or from the child’s suffering what diaper rash looks like in the last, most severe stages of this disease, but to immediately seek qualified medical help.
Diaper rash on the bottom
The skin of a baby up to one year of age is very thin, delicate and very vulnerable. It is prone to dryness and is not able to fully prevent the penetration of all sorts of substances and microscopic pathogens of various infections through it. The network of vessels in the baby's skin is located in close proximity to the outer layers, and the thickness of the fat layer is very small. Because of this, moisture evaporates in the shortest time when overheated. One of the problems that mothers may face is diaper rash on the baby's bottom.
This inflammatory process appears mainly in the gluteal folds and is caused by the fact that a large amount of moisture reduces the layer of protective natural lubrication on the skin, which opens a direct path for pathogenic microbes and, in turn, provokes inflammation.
The development of inflammatory processes on the bottom in the form of diaper rash also occurs as a result of prolonged irritation of the skin by feces and urine.
If you wrap your baby too tightly, his skin, deprived of access to air, overheats and becomes sweaty. Also, when after bathing the baby is not dried thoroughly enough, the moisture remaining on the body can become one of the factors causing diaper rash.
Friction from diapers, the use of synthetic fabrics for swaddling, and clothing made from synthetics can cause inflammation that can later lead to diaper rash.
Diaper rash on the bottom can be prevented if you follow simple rules for caring for your baby's skin. You need to carefully select care products that do not cause allergies; minimize the use of substances that can cause irritation; dress in diapers and clothes without rough seams (avoiding synthetics) that do not rub the folds of the skin; be sure to wash and clean the baby's bottom from natural secretions every time he pees or poops.
Intertrigo between the buttocks
Intertrigo between the buttocks is a skin irritation that occurs not only in infants, but is also often encountered by adults. Considering the location of such intertrigo, its treatment is associated with some difficulties. This disease appears, provoked by moisture and friction, as a rule, in the hot season, when high ambient temperatures lead to intense sweating, both in men and women.
People who are overweight are mostly prone to diaper rash between the buttocks, and in addition, people with diabetes are at increased risk of developing it.
The action guide for intertrigo in the intergluteal area is the same as the measures that need to be taken in case of intertrigo in the groin. To overcome such a problem as intertrigo between the buttocks, it is necessary, first of all, to eliminate or minimize the friction factor. This means wearing underwear made of natural, non-synthetic materials, without rough seams; the need to adhere to the rules of personal hygiene; and also using all kinds of softening creams and vegetable oils to relieve skin irritation.
Diaper rash on the neck
Diaper rash on the neck mainly occurs in infants. Since the baby's thermoregulatory functions have not yet developed and are not stable, he is highly susceptible to hypothermia or, on the contrary, can easily overheat. In excessively hot conditions, the child begins to sweat heavily, which is a prerequisite for the formation of diaper rash. Due to the fact that the neck of a newborn is short and the skin on it forms many folds, sweat mainly accumulates in them. As a result of its prolonged exposure, irritation may occur and the inflammation process may develop.
Therefore, to prevent this, it is very important to provide and maintain the optimal temperature regime for the baby. One of the key factors in this matter is the choice of the right clothes for the child. For example, if the room is not too warm, then a cap made of flannel or fleece fabric should be put on his head, and when the temperature is high enough, the cap can be cotton. The same applies to the undershirt and rompers.
In the event that you still failed to protect your baby from developing diaper rash on his neck, you need to wash the affected areas of the skin with a warm chamomile infusion using a cotton swab. Afterwards, wipe dry and immediately apply baby powder, which will absorb the remaining moisture and help the skin stay dry.
As we can see, diaper rash on the neck is a common case of irritation on the skin of a baby and in order for it not to bother the baby, it is often enough to adhere to basic hygiene rules, in caring for the baby's skin, make sure that it is dry and clean. It is also important to create optimal temperature conditions for the child, not allowing hypothermia, but also not wrapping up excessively, which can lead to overheating and, as a result, to diaper rash.
Chafing under the armpit
Along with diaper rash in the groin area, between the fingers and toes, in the folds of the abdomen in overweight people and under the breasts in women, diaper rash under the armpits is one of the most common cases of irritation and inflammation that occurs in the folds of the skin. The armpits are among the places on the human body that are most susceptible to intense sweating. Increased sweating in men and women is mainly observed in the summer due to the high ambient temperature.
A large amount of sweat remaining under the armpit and on clothing for a long time acts as a skin irritant. If such an irritant is not eliminated, there is a possibility of developing diaper rash. In this case, itching of the skin, pain, a person begins to experience general discomfort, and can become very fixated on such a problem that has arisen. In the process of development, if no treatment is immediately taken against it, diaper rash tends to increase the affected areas. And if fungi and pathogenic bacteria get on the damaged skin, infections and other undesirable complications can occur.
To prevent this, you should start treatment immediately when diaper rash is detected under the armpit. Fortunately, at the initial stages, it is quite sufficient to simply wash your armpits thoroughly with soap and apply some disinfectant to the irritated skin area.
Diaper rash on the legs
Intertrigo on the feet is an inflammatory and infectious condition that affects the skin in the folds between the toes.
This process is caused by the proliferation of pathogenic fungal microorganisms, the ideal conditions for which are excessive sweating and sebum formation, mutual friction of skin surfaces and insufficient air flow and circulation in these areas of the body.
This type of irritation and inflammation of the skin can be caused by poor-quality footwear. In this regard, not the least risk factor is that a person walks for a long time, in particular, in rubber boots. Such an individual feature of the body as a tendency to excessive sweating of the feet can also lead to the occurrence of diaper rash on the feet. It should be noted here that in some cases, excessive sweating of the feet indicates a malfunction of the sweat glands, in connection with which appropriate treatment should be prescribed. On the other hand, the release of a certain amount of sweat is an integral aspect of the healthy functioning of the body. An overly active decrease in sweat function in the feet can provoke the appearance of severe headaches in the patient.
Due to the fact that the legs, like the arms, are much more often than other parts of the body in contact with microflora that has pathogenic properties, there is a considerable probability that the inflammation will be accompanied by the development of all sorts of secondary infections. First of all, those caused by fungi. Therefore, in order to most fully protect yourself from their appearance, including from diaper rash on the legs, you should pay close attention to any incipient inflammatory processes.
Navel rash
Navel rash may be one of the special cases of omphalitis – inflammation of the navel. The development of pathological progress is caused by inflammatory processes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue in the umbilical region. The cause of inflammation is predominantly infectious – fungal or bacterial in nature.
Characteristic manifestations are the occurrence of swelling of the skin in the navel area and the release of a purulent-bloody fluid from the umbilical cavity. As a result, the formation of crusts from serous-purulent discharge is noted, which subsequently separate. In the absence of appropriate treatment, over time, excessive granulation occurs on the navel fungus (the bottom of the umbilical wound), which to a certain extent prevents the epithelialization of such weeping. There is a possibility of the appearance of a mushroom-shaped neoplasm of a pink color.
Treatment is not associated with any significant difficulties and mainly comes down to the need to regularly treat the navel and umbilical ring area with antiseptic solutions and ointments, and in addition to this, drainage is mandatory and physiotherapy is prescribed.
When such a disease as navel rash is detected, one should not forget that self-prescribed treatment measures and the use of drugs at one's own discretion in most cases rather aggravate the condition than cause improvement. Thus, the choice of the method and the selection of the treatment regimen should be carried out exclusively by a competent specialist in the relevant field of medicine.
Intertrigo of the feet
Foot rash is a consequence of skin irritation and inflammation that can be provoked by the proliferation of pathogenic agents, mainly fungi, in the skin. The prerequisites for the occurrence of such a process are excessive sweating of the feet, failure to comply with hygienic standards for foot care, and chafing of the skin from wearing tight shoes. At the beginning of its development, this disease is localized mainly in the area of the 3rd and 4th interdigital folds on the feet, and as it progresses, it involves areas of skin beyond them in the affected area. Subsequently, cracks form in the folds, which, as a result of prolonged walking, can show a tendency to damage the integrity of the skin, which are erosive in nature and are characterized by wet surfaces. Some swelling of the skin is observed, which acquires a reddish tint, general discomfort, severe itching and, in some cases, quite pronounced pain occur.
The course of diaper rash of the feet is chronic, the peak intensity of its occurrence is reached mainly in the summer, which is caused by high ambient temperatures causing severe sweating.
In order to forget about such an unpleasant phenomenon as foot rash, it is enough to follow a number of simple recommendations. In particular, to avoid skin irritation from abrasions, which can cause irritation and inflammation, you need to wear loose shoes that do not restrict the mobility of the foot; the use of special orthopedic insoles is also a favorable factor. It is also necessary to thoroughly dry your feet after washing, and if your feet sweat excessively, it makes sense to use a special powder.
Diaper rash in women
Human skin, in addition to its other main functions, also performs a protective function. It protects the soft tissues of the body from adverse environmental influences, and at the same time is itself quite easily vulnerable and subject to all sorts of damage. Women's skin is thinner and more vulnerable than men's skin. Among all the phenomena that adversely affect its condition, one of the most common and unpleasant is diaper rash in women.
Intertrigo is characterized by an inflammatory process in the skin, mainly in those places on the body where skin folds form. For example, in the armpits, in the groin area, in the lower abdomen under the breasts in women, etc.
The risk of such skin inflammation is most significant if a woman's body has any metabolic disorders or is overweight. In the presence of excess body weight in obese women, the localization of diaper rash is often the neck, popliteal and elbow folds.
Friction when skin areas move between each other provokes irritation, against which background, if the necessary medical measures are not taken, inflammation develops. The result is the appearance of cracks and wet ulcerated areas in the folds of the skin. Which can be fertile ground for the development of fungal and other infectious processes.
Diaper rash in women is caused by a combination of factors, the main ones being: the fact that the woman does not adhere to the necessary hygiene rules, a tendency to increased sweating, excess weight, friction of the skin over a long period of time, and disruption of the protective function of the skin.
Chest rash
Chest rash is not such a rare case of this skin lesion, however, due to the shyness and delicacy of the place of its detection, many women experience significant difficulties in addressing this problem to a medical specialist, or open up about it to anyone from their environment. But it should be remembered that in addition to, at least, discomfort and pain, without timely proper treatment, its presence can entail serious undesirable consequences.
This type of inflammation mostly affects women with excess body weight. Moreover, the possibility of its occurrence is directly related to the fact that they do not wear a bra, or if the bra is made of synthetic fabric. Both of these factors cause a disruption in air circulation, which causes excessive sweating and activation of the sebaceous glands.
These processes may be characterized by increased intensity of their course against the background of the fact that during the period of lactation and breastfeeding in the female body, along with the production of milk, metabolism accelerates. This is accompanied by an increase in local temperature, which also increases the risk of diaper rash.
The primary necessary measure against the development of this type of inflammation is the need to minimize the friction of skin folds. For this purpose, you can use cotton fabric, placing it under the breasts. Further, as for bras, they should not have hard bones to avoid injury to problem areas. In addition, maximum attention should be paid to the issue of skin care. In areas of diaper rash, it is necessary to simultaneously dry the skin and use products to soften and restore it.
However, the above actions are not fully sufficient therapeutic actions, and in order to overcome diaper rash of the chest, when painful symptoms appear, it is necessary to consult a medical specialist to determine the course of treatment and prescribe the required drugs.
Diaper rash from pads
According to many medical specialists in the field of gynecology, pads are more preferable than using tampons. Among their main advantages is a better ability to absorb liquid, which causes a significant reduction in the likelihood of leaks. Of course, the risk is minimal only if you change pads in a timely manner. In addition, unlike a tampon, a pad does not interfere with menstrual blood, washing the vagina, freely exiting.
However, under certain circumstances, it is still more appropriate to use tampons. For example, when swimming during menstruation in open water or pools. But gynecologists, as a rule, are unanimous in their recommendations to avoid swimming on such days if possible, even in the bathroom. Well, if a woman still decides to swim, then tampons will come in handy. Another case in which it may make sense to opt for the latter is the hot season.
In the summer, there are significant prerequisites for the greenhouse effect to occur and for diaper rash to occur from pads. In addition, pads can sometimes cause friction of the skin in the groin folds, and menstrual blood is an environment in which pathogenic bacteria can actively multiply.
Diaper rash from pads, which can occur in some cases of their use, is not the worst of their possibilities, since during menstruation the uterus opens up, which provides an easy way for pathogens of all kinds of infections to enter it. Therefore, it is necessary to wash yourself every time you change your sanitary product after every 3-4 hours, even if the discharge is not too heavy and the pad does not have time to fill to the limit during this period.
Diaper rash in pregnant women
During the period during which a woman is carrying a child, her body is subject to many specific changes, one of which is the activation of sweat and sebaceous glands of the skin. As a result, the expectant mother quite often has exactly the same skin lesions that are typical for newborns and infants, manifested in particular in the form of diaper rash. Diaper rash in pregnant women is localized mainly in those places on the body where the skin forms natural folds, for example, in the armpits, under the breasts, in the groin area, etc. The peak of the maximum number of diaper rash occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. After childbirth, they usually soon pass. There is a different probability of their occurrence at different times of the year. Diaper rash occurs more often in the summer, but in the winter the probability of its occurrence is low.
In case of diaper rash in pregnant women, the issue of maintaining personal hygiene is of great importance, in particular, increased attention is required in areas where skin irritation and redness are observed, where there are signs of developing inflammation. The primary task is the need to cleanse the pores in order to remove excess heat, ensure optimal thermoregulation and, as a result, prevent the skin from becoming sweaty.
Diaper rash in a baby
Diaper rash in children is observed mainly in newborns and in infancy. The cause of such irritations and inflammatory processes on the skin in places of natural folds is, first of all, the fact that the baby's thermoregulation processes have not yet been fully established and stabilized. Due to this, if the baby is wrapped up and dressed in clothes that are too hot and do not correspond to environmental conditions, not only the skin overheats, but also the general overheating of the body occurs. This in turn can cause an increase in temperature in the child, and accordingly increased sweating. Which is one of the fundamental factors for diaper rash.
In addition, infants do not yet have developed control over the processes of natural excretion. Residues of urine and feces on the skin of a child in the absence of the required hygiene provoke the occurrence of irritations leading to diaper rash.
The use of low-quality diapers creates an obstacle to circulation and air flow to the skin, in addition, if they are made of too hard material, they can rub the skin in the groin area. It should also be noted that the perineum of a baby in a diaper is distinguished by a warm and moist skin condition, and this provides ideal conditions for the multiplication of colonies of pathogenic bacteria and pathogenic fungal microorganisms.
Diaper rash in a child, if detected early, is usually not a reason to sound the alarm, and with immediate necessary measures, it can be dealt with in a short period of time equal to three to four days. However, if the diaper rash looks like an infectious lesion, with the presence of pustular ulcers in it, this already calls for the need to seek medical help from a specialist. But the main way to prevent such trouble is daily care of the child's skin and keeping it dry and clean.
Diaper rash in adults
In the absence of any other diseases that may have similar manifestations and symptoms, diaper rash in adults often occurs due to insufficient circulation and air flow to the skin. This can happen for a number of reasons. As a result of wearing underwear made of synthetic materials that impede ventilation. As a result of existing dysfunctions of the sweat and sebaceous glands, preventing the skin from "breathing".
A person with excess body weight is considered to be at increased risk of developing diaper rash in adulthood. With obesity, as a result of the fact that sebum secretion is activated, the pores become clogged, intense sweating is noted, skin irritations occur, which act as prerequisites for diaper rash.
Diaper rash often occurs in adults as a phenomenon accompanying the course of certain diseases. These include fever, endocrine diseases, renal dysfunctions, as well as those characterized by limited mobility. In this case, the areas of the shoulders and back are added to the number of places of natural skin folds where irritation may appear.
In relation to seriously ill patients who are prescribed bed rest, the following should be kept in mind. The products of sebaceous gland secretion, sweat, urine and feces are a factor of adverse effect on the skin, as they contain metabolic and decay products that are the result of the vital activity of pathogenic microorganisms or the consequence of metabolic disorders.
Diaper rash in adults is observed to a much lesser extent than in children, but it does occur and is localized mainly where natural folds of skin form on the human body: in the groin-femoral area, in the armpits, on the buttocks, under the breasts in women, in the folds of the abdomen and neck in people suffering from excess weight. The frequency of their cases in men and women is approximately equal.

Diaper rash in the elderly
In old age, the skin undergoes a significant number of changes. This is reflected in the fact that the skin becomes thinner to a significant extent, which mainly concerns the skin of the hands, feet, large joints, and areas where there are bony protrusions. The features of the processes occurring in the skin become somewhat different. Thus, the activity of the sweat and sebaceous glands decreases, which causes dry skin and loss of elasticity. The skin of an elderly person is subject to injury, cracks, and ulcers easily form on it. And the ability to regenerate and restore is significantly reduced, the skin is poorly amenable to healing. In an elderly bedridden patient, even heavy bed linen or its rough fabric can cause skin injury.
A fairly common phenomenon is diaper rash in the elderly. The elderly do not tolerate conditions of excessively high temperatures and excess air humidity. On the other hand, as a consequence of age-related disorders of skin heat exchange processes, they tend to shiver and freeze. And because of this, they can dress in warm clothes, maybe even excessively warm, not according to the season. Which can act as a factor in overheating and intense sweating of the skin in those places where diaper rash most often occurs, where the skin forms natural folds: in the groin area, in the armpits, under the breasts in women, or on the palms, if the hands are in a compressed state for a long time.
Thus, diaper rash in the elderly can be a much more serious problem than in adults, due to the fact that the skin in old age, as well as in children, is more easily vulnerable and susceptible to the development of all sorts of negative phenomena. But in contrast to the functions of the skin in childhood, the possibility of its healing presents certain difficulties due to unfavorable characteristics.

Diaper rash in a bedridden patient
In the conditions of the modern stage of development of medical science, patients with serious diseases are provided with all the necessary appropriate treatment measures using progressive methods of diagnosis and treatment with the use of the latest technical means and achievements in pharmacology. At the same time, many nuances associated with the fact that a person with a chronic course of a particular disease and during long-term treatment has to be in a lying position are also taken into account. In particular, this concerns compliance with the rules of hygiene and body care. Due to the fact that among the accompanying medical products there are diapers for adults and all sorts of special means for treating the skin of a seriously ill person, this does not present any difficulties at present. The use of diapers for adults is justified when the disease is accompanied by urinary and fecal incontinence. You should not neglect the toilet of the skin after each act of urination and defecation.
Staying in bed for a long time, a bedridden patient sweats. Sweat, not having the opportunity to evaporate from the skin under the blanket, becomes an ideal environment for the reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms. Sweat with kidney and liver dysfunctions is characterized by the largest number of final derivatives from metabolic processes that have toxic properties. Being on the skin for a long time, they provoke its irritation and inflammation, causing diaper rash in a bedridden patient.
In addition, it is important to remember that clean skin facilitates the breathing process, which is also very important for a seriously ill person.
Based on this, it is necessary to carry out hygiene procedures for the patient as needed, change bed linen and underwear, and ensure that it remains dry. Diaper rash in a bedridden patient can be prevented by regularly washing the skin with a soap solution, followed by drying with a cool air stream from a hair dryer, and arranging air baths for the folds of the skin, for which the patient's arms are raised up and the legs are spread apart. It will also be useful to turn him from time to time from his back to his stomach.

Diaper rash or allergy?
If redness, areas of irritation, and inflammation are detected on the skin, the question becomes relevant: what exactly are we dealing with, and what is it - diaper rash or an allergy?
There are a number of signs that are equally characteristic of both phenomena. But there are also certain signs that may be mutually exclusive for them.
So, diaper rash tends to appear only in clearly defined places of the human body. And this is mainly where the skin forms its natural folds. In particular, diaper rash is a fairly common case in the folds of the groin-femoral region and between the buttocks. The next common place for diaper rash to appear is the armpits. In women, they often appear under the breasts, and in obese people - in the folds of the stomach and neck. When, due to some disease, the palm is clenched into a fist for a long time, diaper rash can appear in the folds of the palms. Sometimes diaper rash can occur in the folds between the fingers or toes. However, most of all, it is a consequence of poor and insufficient care of the skin of an infant or in the presence of a skin disease.
As for allergies, their occurrence can be noted anywhere on the body, as a rule, it affects the face, forearms, stomach. Diaper rash almost never appears on the face.
The difference between diaper rash and allergy is also in the nature of the pain symptoms. With diaper rash, there is a burning and tingling sensation on the skin, and rashes of allergic origin are accompanied by an itching sensation.
Diaper rash or allergy? It often costs nothing to make a mistake in the definition. Therefore, you should not rely only on your own knowledge in the field of medicine, and if alarming symptoms arise, do not hesitate to go to the doctor for a consultation. Especially if the question is about the health of the baby.

Treatment of diaper rash
Treatment of diaper rash as one of the primary measures involves minimizing the negative impact of factors that can lead to its progression and deterioration of the skin condition in the affected areas. When diaper rash is of low severity, it is enough to reduce the impact of friction and high humidity, that is, first of all, to stop wearing uncomfortable and tight clothes, try to reduce the intensity of sweating by using appropriate medications. It is also necessary to frequently wash the folds of skin on the body with soap and water or a solution with antiseptic agents. After washing, dry the folds with a cloth that absorbs moisture well, or with a cool stream of air using a hair dryer. In this case, you need to be careful, since the affected areas are very painful, and they cannot be rubbed, but only blotting movements are made, and washed with a stream of water or a solution with an antiseptic.
Treatment of diaper rash, when started soon after the problem is identified, is in most cases effective and helps prevent it from progressing to more severe stages, which are often associated with rather unfavorable consequences.
Prevention of diaper rash
Prevention of diaper rash, first of all, requires that you strictly follow the rules of hygiene, without neglecting regular hygiene procedures, thanks to which the skin always remains clean and well-groomed.
A favorable factor in maintaining healthy skin that helps prevent irritation, inflammation and diaper rash is following an optimal diet with balanced food and foods containing essential vitamins and microelements. In addition, you should be careful when consuming foods and drinks that can cause various types of allergic reactions.
The clothes a person wears play an important role in preventing diaper rash. They should be comfortable, without rough seams that could rub the skin in the folds of the body, preferably not made of synthetic materials. Shoes should only be worn in the appropriate size of the foot.
In addition, it is recommended to give the skin folds air baths from time to time, accompanying them with certain procedures. To do this, the legs are spread wide apart, and the arms are also spread apart or raised up, followed by their straightening.
The thin, delicate and vulnerable skin of a small child requires special attention. It requires careful care and compliance with all basic hygiene rules. In order to prevent the appearance of diaper rash in the baby, each diaper change should be accompanied by mandatory washing, after which the skin should be carefully dried. In addition, before putting on a clean diaper, it is recommended to lubricate the baby's perineum with cream or sprinkle with powder.
A very important condition in relation to the care of bedridden patients is the regular change of bed linen, which should always be dry and clean.
As we can see, preventing diaper rash is not associated with anything that is so difficult to perform, and in many cases it is easier to prevent the development of inflammation on the skin by paying constant attention to its condition, rather than putting in much more effort to combat its possible consequences, including diaper rash.
Prevention of diaper rash and bedsores
With the progression of many severe chronic diseases, a person falls into the category of so-called "bedridden" patients. Being in a horizontal position for a long period of time can be associated with an increased probability of various negative phenomena occurring on certain areas of the skin. Due to this, the prevention of diaper rash and bedsores becomes quite relevant.
The primary task in this matter is to constantly monitor the patient's skin condition. It is necessary to regularly conduct a thorough examination of the entire body in order to possibly identify changes in the skin that may be precursors to inflammation developing in them. The great importance of such a preventive measure is that the earlier the appearance of diaper rash and bedsores is noted, the lesser the measure of therapeutic effects is required to eliminate this problem.
Further, for the purpose of prevention, it is necessary to wash those areas of the body that are subject to a high risk of developing such skin inflammations, with a frequency of at least once a day. The need for such actions increases especially when the patient has urinary incontinence or increased sweating. In the process of carrying out hygiene procedures, it is preferable to use liquid soap, since when soaping with a solid piece of it, you can injure the skin, the protective function of which is weakened. After washing, you should make sure that not the slightest amount of the used detergent remains on the skin, and dry it thoroughly.
It is also important to minimize any physical impact on the skin. For example, it is necessary to avoid tight contact of fabrics, use bed linen made of materials that do not cause friction to areas of the body where the skin may be affected.
It is recommended to regularly change the patient's position, after every two to three hours, turning him from side to side, from back to stomach.
Prevention of diaper rash and bedsores seems to be very important during bed rest, as it allows maintaining healthy skin. And this in turn is by no means the least important factor in the good general condition and well-being of such a patient.
