To understand and describe the condition of a person who suffers from rotten egg burps, one should imagine the processes of hydrogen sulfide gas formation in the digestive system. For this purpose, one must know the following:
- When exactly does burping occur?
- What does the patient himself associate with the appearance of belching?
- Does belching bother you immediately after eating or after some time?
- After eating what food does belching occur?
Belching occurs involuntarily as a result of contraction of the diaphragm and is accompanied by the release of gas into the oral cavity with the smell of rotten eggs.
Belching may appear on its own or against the background of other accompanying symptoms: bloating (flatulence), diarrhea or constipation, bouts of nausea and vomiting, increased body temperature, etc. Signs of dyspepsia and intoxication of the body are possible.
Belching like rotten eggs cannot be considered a separate disease: it is just one of the symptoms of some disease condition in the digestive system. If belching happened once, and the person felt better after that, then most likely there is no reason to worry. But if belching is repeated, and the discomfort does not go away after that, then this is a clear disorder in the gastrointestinal tract.
Rotten egg burps and diarrhea
Belching rotten eggs and diarrhea: this combination of clinical symptoms is often found in food poisoning, a pathological condition that develops after consuming toxic substances or spoiled food. Poisoning can be caused by microbes present in food. These are protozoa, as well as staphylococcal flora, E. coli, strains of clostridia, Klebsiella, citrobacter and their toxins. The sources of such microbes can be both people (sick or healthy carriers) and animals.
Bacteria and their waste products enter our gastrointestinal tract with food, in which they are able to actively live and multiply.
Toxins of many microorganisms (for example, staph infection) are resistant to high temperatures, so the risk of poisoning does not disappear even after boiling the products. In most cases, spoiled food itself gives itself away: it smells bad, its taste, color and consistency change. One of the clear signs that a product is unsuitable is fermentation of food, that is, the appearance of gas in it.
In addition to burping up rotten eggs, food poisoning may cause the following symptoms:
- abdominal pain, nausea, severe diarrhea (watery, foul-smelling, with remnants of undigested food);
- fever, headache;
- weakness.
At the first signs of poisoning, help must be provided immediately. If the intoxication is minor, then belching rotten eggs during poisoning passes within 1-3 days, the symptoms gradually fade.
Rotten egg burps and vomiting
The causative factors of belching rotten eggs, along with vomiting, can be poisoning, described above, or stenosis of the pylorus - the digestive sphincter separating the stomach from the duodenum. The role of the pylorus is to control the physiological flow of digested food from the acidic environment of the stomach cavity to the alkaline intestinal environment.
Stenosis of the pylorus may occur as a result of scarring on the ulcer of the pyloric canal or the anterior part of the duodenum. This process may develop after several acute periods of peptic ulcer disease, as well as with an untreated or incompletely treated ulcer. The scar contributes to the narrowing of the lumen of the pylorus, which provokes stagnation of food mass in the stomach and the development of corresponding symptoms.
If the pylorus is slightly narrowed, and food still passes from the stomach further along the digestive tract, then belching with rotten eggs may bother only periodically. Vomiting of food eaten the day before (especially after overeating), heartburn, heaviness in the stomach occurs.
If such a patient is not helped, then soon the fermentation reactions in his stomach will be replaced by rotting, the metabolism will be disrupted, the patient will lose weight to the point of exhaustion. Urgent hospitalization with surgical intervention will be required.

Bloating and rotten egg burps
Belching with a rotten egg taste against the background of bloating is often seen with decreased acidity of the gastric environment.
The stomach needs hydrochloric acid to fight bacterial flora that enters the body with dirty and stale food, as well as to process food. When acidity decreases, these processes are disrupted, which inevitably provokes the development of microbes in the digestive environment, food stagnation and inflammation of the gastric mucosa.
If gastritis combined with low acidity lasts for a long time, the following symptoms may develop:
- burping rotten eggs;
- putrid metallic taste in the mouth;
- heaviness in the stomach after eating;
- diarrhea or difficulty passing stool;
- dull pain in the abdomen shortly after eating;
- increased gas formation in the intestines;
- general signs of vitamin deficiency in the body (brittle nails, dry skin, hair loss);
- signs of anemia (pale skin, decreased hemoglobin levels).
People suffering from low acidity often want to eat something sour, or something that will stimulate the production of acid in the stomach: a piece of dark bread, cookies, sauerkraut, an apple, lemon, etc.
The chronic form of the inflammatory process in the stomach is characterized by periods of relief and exacerbation of the disease. When the level of acidity reduction is not very pronounced, the above symptoms may disappear. With the onset of exacerbation, they again appear with renewed vigor.
Nausea and burping like rotten eggs
Unpleasant belching of rotten eggs against the background of nausea can be a symptom of pancreatitis - an inflammatory reaction in the pancreas. Such a disease can be a consequence of infectious or inflammatory pathologies of the abdominal cavity: pancreatitis often accompanies cholecystitis or gallstones. Pancreatitis also appears everywhere with improper nutrition and lifestyle: from the effect on the mucous membrane of alcoholic beverages, nicotine resins that we swallow with saliva, from significant food overloads (overeating and excessive consumption of fatty and spicy foods), from taking a large amount of certain medications. This disease most often affects elderly people and those suffering from excess weight.
In case of pancreatic disease, patients note pain in the abdominal area (under the spoon), nausea, dry mouth, hiccups and belching like rotten eggs. In case of exacerbation of pancreatitis, there may be an increase in temperature, increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and sticky sweating. Nausea may develop into profuse repeated vomiting. This condition requires mandatory hospitalization of the patient.
If you have stomach pain and burping like rotten eggs
If belching like rotten eggs is accompanied by abdominal pain, it is important to determine where exactly the pain appears: in the stomach, pancreas, small intestine or large intestine.
If you have pain in the stomach area, you may suspect a chronic form of gastritis with low acidity; belching like rotten eggs in this case is caused by stagnation or putrefactive processes in the stomach, which is associated with the inability to digest food. The latter can be observed with a complete deficiency of hydrochloric acid (achlorhydria) or with its deficiency (achilia). Regardless of the reason for the stomach pain, belching like rotten eggs will only appear if there is stagnation of food in it.
When belching rotten eggs is combined with pain in the pit of the stomach, one may suspect acute pancreatitis - an inflammatory process in the pancreas.
Intestinal pain combined with belching like rotten eggs may indicate irritable bowel syndrome, a pathological condition that occurs with signs of digestive disorders. This syndrome occurs with prolonged stress, prolonged diets and eating unusual food, with endocrine system disorders and dysbacteriosis. The disease is associated with a change in the sensitivity of intestinal receptors, which significantly affects the functional capacity of the intestine. Irritable bowel syndrome is accompanied by abdominal pain (more near the navel or below), which slightly decreases after defecation or gas discharge. Stool disorders can be either diarrhea or constipation. Gas formation in the intestine increases in the afternoon. The disease is accompanied by a feeling of heaviness and fullness in the abdomen, as well as belching air or rotten. Such phenomena are inherent in intestinal atony - the absence or weakness of intestinal peristalsis.
Rotten egg burps and fever
There can be many reasons for belching like rotten eggs and fever. These can be both alimentary disorders and inflammatory processes. There are known cases when these symptoms arose against the background of neuroses and extreme psycho-emotional states. Indeed, nutritional disorders and stress are, unfortunately, frequent companions in everyday life. However, if belching and fever appear simultaneously with acute abdominal pain, this is an alarming signal that cannot be ignored. You should immediately consult a doctor or even call an ambulance.
Acute abdominal pain is often accompanied by belching of something foul, bouts of vomiting and fever. This may indicate pancreatitis, gastritis or acute poisoning. In such situations, it is better not to take any medications, especially analgesics, so that upon arrival the doctor can establish the correct diagnosis.
The following signs should also be a cause for concern:
- belching of rotten food and fever against the background of sharp cutting pains in the abdomen;
- belching with a rotten egg taste and fever against the background of bloody diarrhea;
- belching of rotten smell along with high temperature, feverish state.
If you experience such symptoms, you should definitely call an ambulance and wait for the doctor to arrive, if possible, without taking any pills on your own.
