Elevated levels of chorionic gonadotropin in the serum are detected already on the 8th-9th day after conception. During the first trimester of pregnancy, the concentration of the chorionic gonadotropin rapidly rises, doubling every 2-3 days. In the future, the increase in the level of chorionic gonadotropin slows, reaching a maximum on the 8th-10th week of pregnancy, after which it begins to decline and during the second half of pregnancy remains relatively constant.
In the second trimester of pregnancy, in the presence of Down syndrome in the fetus, the concentration of chorionic gonadotropin in the blood of the pregnant woman is increased, and the AFP is lowered. In view of this, the study on AFP and chorionic gonadotropin is used as a method of mass prenatal screening in the second trimester of pregnancy.

With Down's syndrome, the level of HG is elevated (2.0MoM and above), with Edwards disease reduced (0.7MoM). Complications in the III trimester of pregnancy most often occur with an elevated content of chorionic gonadotropin.
