Not quite pleasant burping with the taste and smell of rotten eggs is the result of the formation of hydrogen sulfide in the digestive tract - a colorless gas that is the result of the activity of sulfur bacteria. Of course, burping with rotten eggs can also occur after eating a large number of eggs, and then there will be nothing strange about it.
However, sometimes this sign can become a symptom of some diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, in which food stagnates for a long time and is not digested properly.

Causes rotten egg burps
Most often, belching with rotten eggs appears when the digestive processes in the gastrointestinal tract slow down. This provokes stagnation and fermentation of food with the subsequent release of a large amount of gaseous substance - hydrogen sulfide. It is this gas that is the source of the smell of rotten eggs.
The most common causes of belching are:
- the presence of salmonella in the digestive tract;
- disorder of enzyme production in chronic inflammation of the pancreas;
- difficulty in the secretion of bile, and as a result - an incorrect digestion process with incomplete digestion of fats;
- inflammatory process of the internal walls of the stomach and intestines;
- absence or weakness of the motor function of the stomach.
Belching with rotten eggs can also occur with poisoning. For example, there are some bacteria that can promote the release of hydrogen sulfide:
- helicobacter pylori – microorganisms that can cause gastritis, peptic ulcers, belching and flatulence;
- Intestinal giardiasis - caused by giardia - single-celled parasites that enter our body with dirty water and food. They provoke hydrogen sulfide belching, flatulence and diarrhea;
- Opportunistic microorganisms that inhabit a healthy intestine can also cause unpleasant burping, but only when there are too many of them. This condition is called bacterial overgrowth syndrome: it often occurs with lactose and fructose intolerance, as well as with celiac disease.
Symptoms rotten egg burps
To understand and describe the condition of a person who exhibits symptoms of rotten egg burping, one should imagine the processes of hydrogen sulfide gas formation in the digestive system. Also, rotten egg burping is very common in children.
There are several known cases when a woman's belching of rotten stool during pregnancy was later observed in the newborn baby. This is associated with congenital disorders of bile drainage from the gallbladder.
Diagnostics rotten egg burps
The evaluation of a patient suffering from rotten egg burps should aim to establish the underlying cause of the indigestion. The following diagnostic procedures may be used:
- blood sampling for general analysis and biochemistry;
- fibrogastroscopy, or gastroduodenoscopy;
- colonoscopy;
- X-ray examination of the stomach;
- irrigoscopy method;
- assessment of gastric juice acidity (Ph-metry);
- manometry method (analysis of peristalsis of the digestive tract);
- ultrasound examination of internal organs;
- coprogram;
- examination of feces for the presence of occult blood.
X-ray examination of the intestines using barium allows to isolate a pathological area if there is an obstacle to the passage of food masses. An examination of the evacuation capabilities of the stomach is carried out: the patient is asked to eat food containing a special substance. Based on the picture seen, a conclusion is made about the size and degree of functionality of the stomach. Long and difficult emptying of the stomach from what has been eaten allows us to assume the cause that slows down the digestion of food.
Ultrasound and CT scans can help diagnose changes in organ contours, fluid accumulation, and growths in the abdominal cavity.
Special studies can be carried out to assess the ability to digest lactose, sugars and their substitutes.

Treatment rotten egg burps
Treatment of belching with rotten eggs is prescribed only after the cause of this symptom has been established. That is, when gastritis is detected, one treatment procedure is prescribed, and in case of pyloric stenosis, another.
What to do if burping rotten eggs is associated with poisoning?
- Perform a gastric lavage: drink a weak solution of baking soda or regular boiled water, then induce vomiting. Repeat this several times until the food residue disappears from the vomit. After this, you can drink a suspension of activated carbon or Sorbex.
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, including herbal teas or special formulations to replenish fluid in the body (for example, Regidron).
- It is advisable to abstain from food during the first 24 hours after poisoning. Then, if the patient feels better, you can start eating pureed soups, liquid porridges, vegetable purees without sauces and with a minimum amount of salt. Peppery, spicy and coarse food is prohibited.
- It is not recommended to use antibiotics on your own. They should only be prescribed by a doctor.
- In case of severe diarrhea, Loperamide may be used.
- If poisoning occurs in a pregnant woman or a child, you should definitely consult a doctor.
- When the signs of poisoning subside, it is necessary to take measures to restore the disturbed intestinal microflora. For this purpose, drugs for dysbacteriosis are prescribed (Yogurt, Bifidumbacterin, Lactobacterin, Bifiform, Linex, etc.).
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should definitely consult a doctor:
- muscle weakness, signs of respiratory failure;
- bloody diarrhea;
- high temperature, severe headache;
- critical loss of fluid from the body.
What to do?
- In case of diarrhea – drink activated carbon (5-8 tablets), drink plenty of liquid, herbal tea, non-carbonated mineral water. It is better not to add sugar to drinks.
- In case of constipation, take a laxative (preferably a herbal remedy, for example, laxative tea), or do an enema.
- In case of dysbacteriosis, drink fresh kefir or yogurt, or take a probiotic preparation (Linex, Colibacterin, Baktisubtil).
- In case of bloody and debilitating diarrhea, call a doctor immediately.
- In case of overeating, take an enzyme preparation (Festal, Enzistal, Mezim).
- In case of exacerbation of gastritis or peptic ulcer, take an enveloping and astringent agent (Phosphalugel, Almagel).
- If bile stasis occurs, you can take a choleretic agent (Holosas, Cholenzym, Allochol) or drink tea with lemon.
Treatment of belching with rotten eggs using pills should be agreed upon with a doctor. It should not be forgotten that belching with rotten eggs is only one of the symptoms of some disease or condition, and pills should be used to treat the disease that causes this symptom. Only with this approach can belching really be eliminated.
Diet
In the acute period of diseases accompanied by belching of rotten eggs, it is necessary to switch to the use of easily digestible and gentle food that promotes increased production of gastric juice. Cottage cheese, kefir, fermented baked milk, low-fat sour cream, strained soups, cereals, stewed vegetables are introduced into the diet. It is necessary to eat 5-6 times a day, but in small portions.
When the exacerbation passes, it is useful to drink a honey solution, half an hour before meals (1 teaspoon of natural honey per 0.5 cups of warm boiled water). When acidity in the stomach decreases, it is good to add a tablespoon of plantain juice or raspberry tea to such a solution.
Before meals, it is recommended to drink fruit juice or infusion of sea buckthorn or rose hips, dried apricot and lingonberry compote.
Grapes (about 150 g per serving), tincture of Chinese magnolia vine or unripe walnuts (wash 15 walnuts, chop and infuse in good vodka (1/2 liter), drink a tablespoon three times a day with water) help increase acidity.
To normalize the pH of the stomach environment, it is recommended to use a mixture of natural honey and homemade butter (equal parts). The medicine is taken one tablespoon half an hour before meals up to 4 times a day.
Dishes with vinegar, hot spices, sauces (including mayonnaise and ketchup) should be excluded from the daily menu. Fried, fatty, smoked, pickled foods, as well as alcohol are prohibited.
If belching is accompanied by diarrhea, it is recommended to consume the following products:
- natural jelly or jelly made from berries and fruits;
- blueberry compote;
- strongly brewed black tea;
- crackers or yesterday's dried bread (white);
- soft porridge made from rice or semolina;
- steamed fish or chicken meatballs;
- pureed soup.
If belching is observed against the background of constipation, it is necessary to eat mainly the following dishes:
- fruit and vegetable purees;
- lots of still mineral water;
- prune compote and salads;
- buckwheat and oatmeal porridge;
- salads with unrefined oil, fermented milk products (only fresh, 1-2 days).
And rule number 1 when burping something rotten is not to overeat!
If dietary changes do not bring improvement, you should still consult a doctor.
Prevention
Anyone who has ever experienced all the delights of "rotten" burps is unlikely to want to experience it again. What measures can be taken to prevent the symptom from reappearing?
- Treat all diseases (including chronic ones) in the digestive system in a timely manner.
- Do not overeat, especially before bed.
- Food should be chewed thoroughly.
- Do not eat when you are excited, in a stressful situation, or during physical activity. Do not eat on the run or dry food.
- Do not drink carbonated drinks.
- Do not eat spoiled food, but only fresh and high-quality food.
- Determine the acidity level of your stomach and take appropriate measures.
- After any meal, you should not take a horizontal position. It is better to take a walk or do something useful.
- Eat a little every 2-3 hours. Don't try to eat everything at once. If you can't eat in the middle of the workday, take light snacks to work: an apple, nuts, yogurt (but not chips, crackers, and a hamburger from the nearest fast food).
By the way, it is also better to stay away from fast food and semi-finished products. Try to get used to healthy and wholesome food.

Forecast
Without a doubt, the prognosis for rotten egg burps depends on the underlying disease that is initially the cause of this symptom.
If belching is associated with banal overeating, then the condition can stabilize if you monitor your diet and do not allow yourself to overindulge. In such cases, the prognosis is favorable.
If belching with a rotten taste is associated with ulcerative-cicatricial changes in the pylorus, or with a malignant process in the stomach, then there is no point in talking about a favorable prognosis.
Fortunately, in the vast majority of cases, belching with rotten eggs does not pose a danger to the body. However, you should not ignore this symptom either. It is important to draw the right conclusions, start monitoring your diet and health, carefully select your diet and not eat harmful products. “We are what we eat” is a well-known saying, isn’t it? But for some reason, few people think about the close connection between the food they eat and their health. But it is still worth thinking about, and without waiting for illnesses or such unpleasant symptoms as belching with rotten eggs to appear.
