Peeling is a procedure that helps exfoliate dead skin cells, thereby improving its condition and rejuvenating it. Weak acid solutions (usually glycolic or trichloroacetic) are used for its implementation. Controlled burn after peeling is a natural reaction of the epidermis to the effects of aggressive components, but sometimes uncontrolled damage occurs.
Causes peel burn
The causes of such burns may be as follows:
- Failure to comply with the ratio of acids used during the procedure;
- Performing the procedure on already damaged skin;
- Long-term contact of acids with the skin;
- Individual hypersensitivity.

Symptoms peel burn
The symptoms of a burn are: reddening of the skin, swelling, peeling. After the completion of the pre-planned rehabilitation period (its duration should be reported by the cosmetologist before the procedure), all of them should disappear on their own. But if unpleasant manifestations still remain on the skin after this period, you should consult a doctor.
Burn after chemical and glycolic peeling
Burns after glycolic, chemical or fruit peels, if the procedure is performed correctly, last only 2-3 days, after which they disappear.
Burn after superficial peeling
During superficial peeling, only the tissues of the stratum corneum are damaged, up to the granular layer, so there is no injury to living cells. Burns occur quite rarely and in this case are of the 1st degree.

Complications and consequences
There are 2 types of complications after peeling – early and late.
Among the early ones:
- development of secondary infection;

- allergy to any of the peeling components;
- increased skin sensitivity due to infection;
- soft tissue swelling that lasts more than 48 hours;
- chronic skin pathologies worsen (seborrheic dermatitis, acne, rosacea, etc.);
- development of milia (white skin cysts) on the surface of the epidermis.
Among the later ones:
- skin atrophy;
- development of persistent erythema;
- de- or hyperpigmentation;
- as a result of deep or medium peeling, scars may form on the skin;
- a demarcation line appears on the skin – a clearly defined border separating the peeled areas of the epidermis from the rest of the skin;
- hyperkeratosis develops.

You cannot expose your skin to sunlight, so you should use creams that protect against UV radiation. You need to drink a lot of water and avoid spicy, fatty and salty foods.
Medicines
You should use anti-burn agents such as Olazol, Panthenol, and Bepanten.

Prevention
It is necessary to prepare the skin for peeling in advance, calculate the depth of possible damage, and create the most suitable conditions for the restoration of the epidermis. All this will minimize the possible risk of complications. A very important preventive measure is proper skin care after the procedure.
