Brain sarcoma or intracerebral malignancy appears from the connective tissue of the brain and its membranes. The disease is very rare. The tumor begins to develop as a node that is localized in the skull.

The distinctive features of brain sarcoma are invasion into surrounding tissues, metastasis and frequent relapses. The exact causes of this disease are unknown. Brain sarcomas can be both intracerebral and extracerebral. Tumors also differ in consistency – dense, disintegrating, loose.

  • Extracerebral tumors have outlined nodes, gray-red or yellow in color. The tumor provokes the appearance of cysts, foci of necrosis and contributes to frequent hemorrhages. The growth of the neoplasm is infiltrative.
  • Intracerebral tumors are characterized by their malignancy, blurred edges, invasive rapid growth and the ability to metastasize to healthy tissue.

Causes of brain sarcoma

Oncologists identify a number of risk factors that can cause brain sarcoma. Brain tumors are most often found in elderly patients, but some types of sarcomas can also occur in children. Working with chemicals (chloride, dioxin) is another factor in tumor development. We should not forget about radiation and irradiation, which increase the risk of developing cancer.

Symptoms of brain sarcoma

Symptoms of brain sarcoma are manifested in a steady increase in neurological symptoms. The main symptom is frequent headaches. Also, patients may complain of dizziness, epilepsy, frequent vomiting, visual and mental disorders.

Diagnosis of brain sarcoma

The disease can be diagnosed using both non-invasive and invasive methods. Non-invasive methods include: computed tomography, ultrasound, neurological examination, electroencephalography, and others. Invasive methods include: immunochemical examination, puncture biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging with intravenous contrast.

Treatment of brain sarcoma

Treatment for brain sarcoma varies, depending on the stage of the disease, the patient's age, the presence of metastases, the size of the tumor, and the patient's general health.

  1. Surgical treatment – this method is considered radical, but it helps prevent relapses of the disease. The treatment involves craniotomy to gain access to the tumor and excise it. Surgical treatment is supplemented by radiation therapy and chemotherapy to completely destroy cancer cells.
  2. Radiation therapy is a method of treating brain sarcoma, which is used when surgical treatment is impossible. Radiation therapy is combined with chemotherapy methods. Irradiation consists of several sessions, the therapy affects not only the tumor, but also neighboring tissues, preventing relapses and metastasis. But this method of treatment causes side symptoms (vomiting, fatigue, nausea, vomiting).
  3. Chemotherapy is a treatment using cytostatic drugs that affect tumor cells. Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment that affects the functioning of the entire body. Because of this, the patient experiences a number of terrible side effects.
  4. CyberKnife is a modern method of treating brain sarcoma and other tumor lesions. CyberKnife is an innovative technology that treats tumors without invasive intervention. Such treatment refers to radiosurgery methods and helps prevent metastasis and relapses of the disease.
