Diagnosis of anal itching
The diagnosis of anal itching is made by examining the anal area; anamnestic information is important. The skin is usually dull and thickened, although the underlying pathology is often obscured by excoriations caused by scratching and secondary infection. Skin scrapings for microscopy can detect fungal infections, and stool analysis can detect parasites. Biopsies can be taken from visible lesions.

Treatment of anal itching
Treatment of anal itching involves eliminating foods that may cause anal itching. Clothing should be loose, and nightwear should be light. After defecation, the patient should treat the anal area with absorbent cotton wool or simply a soft cloth moistened with water. With increased humidity in the anal area, talc powders that do not contain medications are effective. For symptoms of irritation, sparing applications of 1% hydrocortisone acetate ointment 4 times a day are effective. Causes of anal itching associated with systemic diseases, parasitic or fungal infections deserve separate consideration.
