The nail (unguis) is a horny plate, which is located in the connective tissue nail bed, from which the nail grows.

A distinction is made between the root of the nail (radix unguis) lying in the nail cleft, the body of the nail (corpus ungius) and the free edge (margo liber) protruding beyond the nail bed. Skin folds that limit the nail from the side of its root and sides, are called the nail roller (vallum unguis).
