ICD-10 code
S93.2. Rupture of ligaments at the level of the ankle and foot.
What causes damage to the ligaments of the ankle joint?
Among isolated gaps of the ankle joints, only a violation of the integrity of the anterior talon-peroneal ligament is observed. The mechanism of trauma indirect - forced supination with plantar flexion.
Symptoms of ankle ligament injury
Patients are concerned about sharp pains in the ankle, significantly limiting its functions.

Diagnosis of ankle ligament injury
Anamnesis
In the history - indication of an injury.
Examination and physical examination
The joint, and also the rear of the external surface of the foot edematous. On the 2-3rd day after the injury, there is a large bruise. When palpation, pain is detected on the anterior ankle surface of the ankle and foot, and the intensity of pain increases if palpation is performed with simultaneous easy plantar flexion and reduction of the foot. Active and passive movements in the joint are severely limited due to pain. After anesthesia, an excessive deviation of the foot to the inside and to the plantar side is detected. Pressure on the heel bone up (axial load) does not cause pain.
Patients limp, when walking limbs rotate outwards, resting only on the heel. Tight bandaging of the joint reduces pain and facilitates the use of the limb.
Laboratory and instrumental research
On X-rays, it is possible to detect the detachment of the cortical layer at the attachment site of the ligaments.

Treatment of ankle ligament injury
Conservative treatment of ankle ligament injury
In the new cases, conservative treatment of ligament injury of the ankle joint is used. After procain blockade, the lesion site (1% solution, 10-15 ml) is applied with a circular gypsum dressing from the upper third of the shin to the ends of the fingers. The stop at an angle of 90 ° is deflected and rotated outwards (hypercorrection, valgus). The period of immobilization is 6 weeks. Then, rehabilitation treatment is shown. For 1-2 months the joint is fixed with an 8-shaped gauze bandage.
Surgical treatment of ankle ligament injury
In the case of chronic ruptures, the ligaments are most often performed by the Watson-Jones method. The material is the tendon of the short fibular muscle. The period of immobilization is 2 months. Postoperative treatment of damage to the ligaments of the ankle joint is the same as in the conservative mode.
Estimated period of incapacity for work
In new cases, work capacity is restored after 2-2,5 months.
