What causes osteoma of the nasal cavity?
The appearance of osteoma in the nasal cavity is a rare phenomenon in otolaryngology, most often primarily this tumor develops in the frontal and maxillary sinuses, in the latticed bone, and from here, increasing, penetrates into the nasal cavity. Most often, the osteoma of the nasal cavity occurs in young people. Sometimes it is combined with a chondroma of the nose. As a rule, outside the osteoma is covered with dense bone tissue, but inside it has a spongy structure.
Symptoms of the osteoma of the nasal cavity
Symptoms of the osteoma of the nasal cavity are determined by the size of the tumor, the rate of its growth and the direction in which it spreads. The main subjective signs of the osteoma of the nasal cavity are the slowly increasing difficulty of nasal breathing, usually on the one hand, hyposmia, mucopurulent discharge, and often trigeminal neuralgia on the same side. With anterior rhinoscopy, usually in the middle nasal passage, a swelling is observed, covered with a normal or hyperemic mucosa, which is hard to probe with a buttoned probe. Over time, the mucous membrane over the osteoma becomes thinner and ulcerated, which causes frequent nasal bleeding. The osteoma of the nasal cavity has a slow progressive growth, during which the symptoms do not remit, but gradually increase. The tumor spreads and squeezes surrounding tissues, causing various disorders depending on the direction of its growth (lacrimation, neuralgic pains, secondary sinusitis, exophthalmos, etc.).

Diagnosis of the osteoma of the nasal cavity
Diagnosis of the osteoma of the nasal cavity usually does not cause difficulties. Of decisive importance is the radiography, in which the corresponding projections used for the study of the paranasal sinuses reveal radiopaque bone formation with smooth contours located in the nasal cavity. To differentiate the osteoma of the nasal cavity follows from the same diseases, from which the papilloma and the chondroma of the nose are differentiated. Most often, the osteoma of the nose is simulated by rhinolith.

Treatment of osteoma of the nasal cavity
The osteoma of the nasal cavity is treated by removing the tumor, and necessarily with the underlying bone tissue to prevent relapse. Often, the source of the tumor is a trellis plate, so surgical intervention must be done very carefully, so as not to damage the dura mater of the anterior cranial fossa. A sign of this damage is a sudden nasal liquorrhea.
