Angioma of the nose is a benign vascular formation located on the wings of the nose between the skin and the cartilaginous tissue. Angioma from the blood vessels is called hemangioma, from lymphatic vessels - lymphangioma.

Hemangiomas of various parts of the body are often found, accounting for 2-3% of all tumors and about 7% of benign neoplasms in otolaryngology.

What causes angioma of the nose?

Hemangioma refers to dysontogenetic tumors arising on the basis of intrauterine disruption of the development of the vascular system. Hemangiomas are often multiple (angiomatosis). Many hemangiomas are devoid of the ability for progressive growth and are not true tumors, but an inborn excess vascular development in any area or an acquired extension of pre-existing capillaries (telangiectasia). There are capillary, cavernous and branching hemangiomas. The first is a cluster of sleeping or swollen capillaries, the second is a knot of large blood-filled cavities, the third is a bundle of dilated and convoluted arterial or venous vessels.

Along with congenital hemangiomas, we also distinguish senile hemangiomas, which are multiple small, 1-5 mm in diameter, ruby-red nodules, located mainly on the trunk, but also found on the face. Structurally, these formations are varicose-dilated, blood-filled capillaries in connective tissue. The mass appearance of such hemangiomas in a short period of time in the elderly was called angioma eruptivum.

Symptoms of angiomy of the nose

Hemangiomas of the external nose of special functional disorders do not cause, except when they spread to the wings of the nose and their inner surface. In this case, nasal breathing is disrupted, the degree of which is determined by the volume of the tumor. Hemangiomas of the nose disrupt basically the cosmetic function of the nose (as defined by VI Voyachek) and may be the cause of dissatisfaction of the patient with the appearance of his face.

Hemangiomas have rapid growth in early childhood. Capillary and cavernous hemangiomas have infiltrating growth, but never give metastases: Bleeding from hemangiomas does not pose a significant hazard due to low pressure in their wide vascular cavities. Only in the cavernous and branching hemangiomas of the brain, bleeding can cause stroke-like seizures or sudden death.

Diagnosis of angioma of the nose

External hemangiomas of the nose are easily recognized by shape, violet-pink or cyanotic color and soft consistency. Hemangiomas of the nose are often combined with hemangiomas of the corresponding half of the face, their treatment, as a rule, belongs to the competence of maxillofacial surgeons and cosmetic surgeons.

Treatment of angioma of the nose

Treatment of angioma of the nose depends on the type of hemangioma. Small capillary hemangiomas are destroyed by electrocoagulation or surgical laser or cryosurgery. Large capillary or cavernous hemangiomas are surgically removed or infiltrated with coagulating solutions, for example urethane. Treatment with hemangiomas usually begin with the earliest childhood. Senile hemangiomas of the nose are usually not treated.
