Symptoms of diphtheria conjunctivitis
Diphtheria conjunctivitis begins acutely. Eyelids swell, become dense, their skin is hyperemic. On the conjunctive pike (often the upper) and on their intercostal space, typical grayish-dirty colors dry films and hemorrhages appear. Films are difficult to remove, and under them a bleeding ulcerous surface is found. Conjunctivitis is accompanied by a significant purulent discharge. Healing occurs with the formation of scars in place of ulcers. In the first days diphtheritic conjunctivitis can be complicated by a disease of the cornea. If an ulcer develops on the cornea, a scar (belly) of larger and smaller size may form; in some cases dense festering melting of the cornea occurs.

Treatment and prognosis of diphtheria conjunctivitis
Treatment of patients with diphtheria conjunctivitis is carried out in infectious patients. The decisive in the treatment is the introduction of antidiphtheria serum (20 000-40 000 units) but without a reason, even in doubtful cases. It is necessary to prescribe antibiotics of the penicillin series, to which the diphtheria bacillus is sensitive. When combined forms of diphtheria include glucocorticoid therapy (prednisolone in a dose of 2-5 mg / kg of body weight per day). Locally appoint frequent eye rinses with disinfectant solutions (potassium permanganate, furacilin, boric acid), the installation of 30% solution of sulfacyl sodium 5-6 times a day, antibiotics (penicillin, 0.5% ampicillin solution), mydriatica - in depending on the condition of the cornea.
The prognosis for diphtheria is very serious for both the eye and the life of the patient.
