Causes of phlegmon of the century

Phlegmon more often develops in children under 3 years old, who have had inflammation of the upper respiratory tract or otitis media; The causative agent of phlegmon of the century is usually Haemophilus influenzae. In adults, the phlegmon of the century develops as a complication of barley, with abscess of the eyelid, the spread of infection from facial tissues, from orbit, paranasal sinuses, and also after wounds, surgeries, insect and animal bites; usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus or mixed flora.

Symptoms of phlegmon of the century

Objectively, reddening of the skin and dense swelling of the entire eyelid are detected, palpation is marked by soreness. Vision and pupillary reactions are not violated. Usually, phlegmon disease of the century occurs with a high fever, a headache, and regional lymph nodes are painful. The appearance of exophthalmos, confusion and limitation of the mobility of the eyeball, double vision, chemosis, visual impairment, the patient's serious condition indicates the spread of inflammation to orbital tissues (orbital cellulite). With the localization of the process in the medial angle of the eye gap, thrombosis of the cavernous sinus, meningoencephalitis, and also sepsis with fatal outcome is possible.

Differential diagnosis is carried out with allergic edema of the eyelids, severe blepharoconjunctivitis, dacryoadenitis, trauma, blepharohalasis, thyroid ophthalmopathy.

Treatment phlegmon of the century

Phlegmon of the century is treated conservatively. Apply antibiotics inside and intramuscularly (claforan). When there is a fluctuation, the abscess of the eyelid is opened.

In the absence of complications, the prognosis is good. In connection with rough scarring in the delayed period, eyelid plasty may be required.
